Overview

Almadena House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms for 4 . + Cottage for 2

A handsome villa, with delightful mature gardens & a large private pool. Experience a truly authentic village life, with friendly Portuguese neighbours, plus comfort and privacy - a rare combination ! The Villa has a superb sunny (25 foot) sitting room at first floor level, with wood-burning stove, overlooking a pasture often grazed by goats. 2 French windows lead onto a wide sun terrace looking towards the coastal cliffs. Steps curve down to the mature walled garden containing peach, orange, lemon and mandarin trees, fruiting vines & a gazebo.

The adjacent private pool is surrounded by floral beds in its own walled garden, reached by a gate in the Villa garden, thus enabling it to be secured safeguarding infants. The ground floor has 2 large twin bedrooms with French windows into the garden & 2 bathrooms (baths & showers). The optional cottage (Casita) has a sitting room (with a sofa which can become two single futons), 1 twin bedroom & bathroom. There is air-conditioning , and heating if required in winter months.

A generous welcome pack of food and wine is included. An English babysitter is available. Additional beds, cots and high chair are available.

The house has views over open countryside and over the quaint village roof tops to the coast. The area, being a National Park, is generally agreed to be the most beautiful in the Algarve and is richly endowed with wild flowers, rare birds and butterflies.

Golf, fishing, riding, tennis and sailing, are all only a few minutes away, as are little whitewashed fishing villages where the morning catch is sold and cooked, very cheaply.

About Carmel Dalzell

The owner (not Carmel, who is a friend of the owner and is dealing with the bookings ) writes : I was a barrister, a Cambridge don and a schoolmaster at Oundle and, after retirement , a professional artist, having been an amateur painter for many years previously.

I hold annual exhibitions in London, Paris, and Oundle where I still live, in a 500 year old drovers' inn, with an art gallery converted from the ancient stables.

I am also a keen musician , playing the bassoon in various chamber ensembles, and on numerous occasions have brought chamber groups to the Villa and given concerts in the local area.

Carmel Dalzell purchased this house in 1978

Why Carmel Dalzell chose Almadena

The owner (not Carmel) writes : I found this charming village almost by chance 35 years ago. I had come to Portugal in search of beautiful places to paint, but, dismayed by the wanton development along most of the Algarve coast, penetrated to the west Algarve, which was then virtually unknown, and discovered this delightful village, only a few minutes walk from the most stunning coast.

I was painting there when a villager told me about a ruined manor house (the Casa) which was for sale very cheaply, and having fallen in love with the village, I rashly bought it at once. This was the start of over 10 years restoration, and subsequently, the designing of a smaller house (the Villa) in its grounds, which is now completely separate and the conversion of two old barns into a cottage (Casita) in the Villa grounds.

It was a somewhat fraught experience at the time, but being finished it is an unfailing joy whenever I go there, either to paint or with friends and family (see photo, on the beach). Astonishingly, the village and environs have hardly changed since my first arrival and I bless the day when I made that impetuous decision to buy the old ruin.

What makes this house unique

The owner (not Carmel) writes : There is too much to summarise here, but, briefly, I love the tranquility and beauty of the place with many of the old village characters whom I have known for 35 years, the wonderful views in all directions, the sense of peace and privacy in my gardens and pools, the astonishing bird life and the timeless quality of the place. I can't do justice to it here - you need to experience it for yourself !

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have just returned from a magnificent holiday in your property.

Very occasionally one manages to find a a location with unique charm.

Your villa can only be described as spectacular. the sort of place which one sees on the cover of holiday brochures but never finds in practice. We would like to book it for the same time next year ; meanwhile we intend to improve our golf so that we can enjoy the beauty and challenges of the splendid course. Mr and Mrs J. Terry, Chester---This was our fourth visit to Villa dos Arcos, and every time we come we love it more. This year John’s highlights were several sightimngs of booted eagles seen from the path to the beach, Marsh Harriers seen from the terrace and a Hoopoe strutting in the garden. For us it is a perfect house in a perfect village and we are already looking forward to returning again next year. - John and Sue S

Thank you for a wonderful week !

  • 5 of 5

To our suprise and delight, all our expectations were fulfilled . The property was just as described ; a charming, comfortable house, well equipped, with a beautiful garden, fruiting trees and a large pool, in an astonishingly unspoilt village. We loved our breakfasts on the sunny terrace, lunches by the pool and barbecues in the garden, surrounded by brilliant bouganvilleas and lit by the distinctive -pattern thrown by the garden wall lights.

It was spotlessly clean without being clinical or bland - both the villa and the village are full of authentic, traditional character. We bought warm bread daily from one of the two quaint little village shops, and the exceptionally fresh sea food was amazing. We saw many rare birds, including a booted eagle, and swam daily in the pool and once - brvely - in the sea (from the glorious beach which we had entirely to ourselves).

This property is highly recommended . We will be back next year - but with our children and grandchildren.

Preaceful seclusion in unspoilt Portugal

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Vila dos Arcos in consecutive years and it was good to have the memories of our previous stay revived and refreshed. The villa is situated in the heart of the unspoilt village of Figueira and several, glorious, south-facing, secluded beaches are only short (20-30 minutes) walks away along lazily winding country lanes.

The beautifully and sensitively renovated property offers a haven of privacy and tranquillity, reliably clean and comfortable, with its thoughtfully constructed patios and pool, with a remarkable assortment of sitting areas to suit one's mood or, simply, the time of day.

If you are looking for a peaceful, restorative break, a time for reading or quiet contemplation, interspersed with the occasional dip or two in the pool, eating and drinking in the shade of the vine-covered pergola or soaking up the sun by the exquisitely blossomed bougainvillea – you will not be disappointed.

If you are after Portuguese nightlife and frenzy, then Vila dos Arcos is not for you.

A secluded, spacious and delighful villa.

  • 5 of 5

A very charming villa, private garden and pool, set on the outskirts of a small, quiet and unspoiled village. We enjoyed a perfect January week in a new part of the world for us and we took every opportunity to explore a most interesting part of Portugal. The people are charming and pleased to help. The food, especially sea food is delicious, plentiful and exceptionally good value.

We much look forward to returning later in the year when the warmer weather will allow us to enjoy the several lovely and clean beaches in the vicinity.

Ein schoene und ruhige Oase

  • 5 of 5

A birdwatcher's paradisen

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of keen bird watchers and had a wonderful fortnight in which we saw more varieties than we have ever seen before. The high point was the amazing sight of over 100 Griffon Vultures circling and landing on their migratory journey , only 500 yards away.

Numerous raptors were spotted daily on the walk to the beach (where we saw Cormorants and Gannets), we hosted a Hoopoe in the garden and the meadow outside the window was alive with Egrets. Thanks to the useful bird log in the house, we found a cliff face swarming with Bee-eaters and spotted Marsh Harriers, Warblers and , to our delight, one Booted Eagle.

The accommodation was ideal : clean, very comfortable, well equipped and simply but tastefully decorated and furnished. The gardens were a daily delight, the pool still warm enough to swim , and we loved being able to pluck oranges and lemons fresh from the trees.

When we broke a large bowl , a phone call to the cleaner produced a replacement the next day, our offer to pay for it being generously declined. All in all , a perfect holiday in an amazingly unspoilt and beautiful place. Thank you.

Lovely stay in unspoilt village

  • 5 of 5

We have had a wonderful week in Villa des Arcos. The house had everything we could want and we greatly valued the complete privacy of the beautiful garden and pool - picking fruit from the trees and enjoying meals under the vine- covered pergola. Whilst not a luxury villa (it never claimed to be one) it was comfortable and spacious, well equipped and with sensational views in both directions.

The walk to the delightful, secluded beach was a joy, easily accomplished by all the family in fifteen minutes. The village restaurant had excellent local food at astonishingly cheap prices.

We can't wait to return next year as there is so much more that we still want to see and do.

The village is located in the West Algarve approx 8 miles west of the historic town of Lagos. The village has changed little with the twentieth century. Brightly painted houses look onto winding cobbled streets.

The area, generally agreed to be the most beautiful in the Algarve, consists of gently rolling hills with a wealth of walks through fig and almond groves. This National Park is the Algarve's only conservation area and is richly endowed with wild flowers and an astonishing range of birds and rare butterflies. A bird- watching log is kept in the Villa and features frequent references to various eagles, harriers, egrets, hoopoes, vultures and warblers. Expert guided bird-watching tours are available.

The village is under a mile from the completely untouched coastline of small sandy coves, and stands approximately 100 feet above sea level in open countryside overlooking a wooded valley dotted with white windmills and eucalyptus forests.

Other Activities: Bird watching and reserve, donkey sanctuary

Golf: Parque da Floresta is 1/2 kilometres away; this 18 hole championship golf course (due to be expanded to 36 holes) is in a beautifully landscaped setting and has a health centre, swimming pools, tennis courts (floodlit), bowling green, restaurants, club facilities, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, classes, competitions and social events. Concessionary rates have been negotiated via the local representative.
