LOCATION: Turtle Beach, St. Kitts (St. Christophers), Caribbean. Turtle Beach is a 15-20 minute drive from the airport on a beautiful drive south over the mountains of the South East Peninsula, with Atlantic ocean on the left and the Caribbean Ocean on the right.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Our new, architecturally-designed home is currently un-named and at one time we were jokingly thinking of naming it “The Black Hole” since we have found ourselves unable to leave the veranda from breakfast time until mid-afternoon. Some days we never left! We’d be reading, talking, eating, sleeping and playing games. The talking part was invariably about what we should do that morning for our activity. Sometimes we would walk the 100 yards down the hill to Turtle Beach and go snorkeling on the reef. If we went out to the left of the reef, we would invariably see two to three green turtles (most likely the reason this quiet bay got its name). If we felt really energetic, we’d jump in the car and drive 5 minutes to Sandy Bank beach and go boogie-boarding.

Our home is situated on a hill above Turtle Beach, on the southernmost tip of St. Kitts, looking across the 2 mile ocean Narrows to Nevis and the 3,000’ Mt. Nevis. The house is angled so it catches the tropical breezes just right. The only sounds one falls to sleep or awakens to are the sounds of nature. We have a two-car parking area off the hill. The wrought iron gates leads you down to the rear open courtyard of tiles, white rounded stone, plantings and an outdoor shower area.

MAIN FLOOR: From the rear courtyard, the French doors open up to the living room area, taking your eyes directly to the 18’ wide glass Nanadoor that opens up to the veranda and the breathtaking views of Mt. Nevis across the Caribbean waters.

Contiguous to the right of the living room is the fully equipped gourmet kitchen. The gas stove/electric oven is located in a center island looking out through another set of French glass doors to the infinity edge pool and across the blue waters to Nevis. Looking back into the kitchen from the pool are five teak high-stools facing the kitchen bar. The underside of the bar is faced with local natural stone as is the wall around the window sink that looks into the rear courtyard. All stonework accented throughout our home and the walls outside were completed by Sandy Point, the islands premier stone mason. The laundry and powder room are also on this floor. A TV/music center joins the living area with the kitchen (bring your i-Pods). The remaining accents of quartz counter tops, Florida porcelain tile (throughout our home), teak furniture by Kingly-Bate and vaulted ceilings with three fans complete the main living area.

The five-panel glass Nanadoor slides open in concertina fashion to the left, leaving an expanse of indoor/outdoor living between living room, veranda and sun deck (this is our black hole I described earlier). Several lounge chairs and other seating areas are located on the veranda. We always move our 6-8 person teak dining table and chairs outside for daytime games, reading, and evening dinners under the stars. We used stainless steel railings around the veranda and pool to minimize disruption to the eyes as you take in the views.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, A/C, vaulted ceilings and fan, and en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower/window looking out to Nevis. The master bedroom on this floor with its own balcony, and the guest bedrooms down stairs, all have this wonderful view. A large walk-in closet off the master bedroom stores sheets, towels and supplies while still giving space for clothing and suitcases, etc.

DOWNSTAIRS: Two guest bedrooms have either a queen or two extra-long twins beds (can convert to one King) and share a bathroom and walk-in shower. Both have A/C, ceiling fans. Guests can exit the downstairs hallway to the quiet veranda and take in the views by the landscaped garden.

Hurricane shutters are on all windows for both security when our home is vacated, but also for those who can’t abide to be woken up by the splendor of sunrise! Like many islands, power and water outages are not unheard of, so we have equipped our home with a liquid propane generator large enough to automatically cope with all electrical house needs. Mains water comes to the house through an 800gal cistern, so even with a water break, the house supply should not be uninterrupted. For our peace-of-mind, and yours, we have a 24/7 external video surveillance camera system.

The villa is maintained beautifully by an on-island Property Manager (also our Project Manager for construction) who knows the building very well. He can be contacted in the rare event you have any building issues. A gardener and pool boy will service the property before your arrival as will our wonderful housekeeper, who will provide cleaning and laundry service before your arrival. Additional services can be arranged directly through the building manager.

About Nick Guise

Cathy comes from the New England area in America and Nick was born in England and came over to America in the early 80s. They both work in the Biotechnology field which is where they met in the mid 90s and have been happily married, and avid travelers ever since.

Why Nick Guise chose Turtle Beach

We first visited St. Kitts with friends in 2001 and stayed at the Reggae Bar & Grill on Turtle Beach which closed at 6pm every night, leaving us upstairs in the apartment to the sounds of the ocean waves, the rustle of palm leaves and other nature-tunes that the tropical breeze brought. Of the 2-3,000 acres of land of the South East Peninsula, we were likely part of a night population of 15-20 people! A few years later, our friends built at Turtle Beach and for a number of years we benefitted by their hospitality. We realized after our first visit that, just like you see on the glossy pages of travel magazines, we had found “our” paradise, and made our own future plans to build.

What makes this villa unique

We love to come here with no schedule in mind; we have enough of those in our work. If you need a place to kick back and relax, indulging yourself in doing nothing, or hiking, diving and being active, then our home and island will quickly get you in the mood. There are 3-4 beach restaurants within 3-5 minutes drive, each offering a little different style/quality of food. Sugar cane used to be the main industry of St. Kitts and its only been in the last 5-6 years that tourism has really started. So St. Kitts is not like most of the other well established, highly populated Caribbean islands. There is still plenty of serene, unspoilt areas to visit, as well as night life along the beaches of Frigate Bay and the hotel areas. 1/2 hour ferry rides get you over to Nevis to explore by bike, taxi or car.

Beautiful Spot. Great Value.

You can read the superlatives in the other reviews. They are true. I just want to add some tips and perhaps some other helpful information for potential guests. This was our first trip to St. Kitts. We are frequent visitors to the islands (Caymans, Bahamas, BVI, Turks & Caicos, etc...) and stayed 2 of the past 4 years at a mountain side villa on Nevis on the Four Seasons property. Rest assured, this Turtle Beach villa is a far better value than the Four Seasons which is itself a pretty amazing place. One thing we loved was being on the windward side of the island yet being just minutes (by car) from the Caribbean thus having best best of both worlds.

Best nearby restaurants/bars are Spice Mill (1 mile). Salt Plage is a new high-end beach bar with a yacht club vibe. Very upscale. Beautiful design. Located just north of the new marina. The sign faces north so it's hard to see coming from the villa and headed back toward the city. Maybe 3 miles away. Carabola beach club was a huge surprise. New and very very snazzy but all opened up to the sea. High end but not too pricey. Maybe 6 miles away...just north of Shipwreck bar. We read in Tripadvisor that when the cruise ships are in then Carabola can be a nightmare so perhaps call ahead. We had a great experience. Also fun but typical Caribbean beach bars are aforementioned Shipwreck and Reggae Beach Bar which is less than a mile from the villa. The personality of Reggae changes based on whether the taxis have dropped off a bunch of cruisers but we went there on several occasions and always had a good time.

If you intend on snorkeling we suggest bring your own equipment. There is none at the house and the rentals are expensive and restrictive.

We rented a 4x4 from Dwayne the property manager. He picked us up at the airport and filled our pantry as well. You MUST have a 4x4 to get around. The villa is in an isolated part of the island. You will be 20 minutes (over 2 mountains) from Basse Terre. This is a good thing. In no way is the location a negative but you must be able to be mobile. Relying on taxis would be expensive and cumbersome.

An additional FYI, we had about a 4 hour gap between when we needed to be out of the villa (10 am.) and when we needed to be at the airport but we wanted to enjoy the day and be able to freshen up before getting on our plane. You can rent a room at the Marriott from 9 am to 6 pm for about $125 bucks. Or just get pool passes.

Living in the blue splendor

Nick and Cathy, you have built a magnificent house framed around a stunning blue view. The house is very well designed and the location remotely perfect. The deck, expertly done, taking full advantage of the view providing every meal and cocktail with a backdrop beyond belief. The 20 ft sliding multi-folding glass living room door opens the living room up to the deck and view making the room feel 4 times as large and seemingly bringing you that much closer to ever luring Nevis in the backdrop. The kitchen/living room/deck living space works incredibly well and would show well in a magazine; you could have 20 to dinner. The light and airy bedrooms/bathrooms are also perfectly designed with vaulted whitewashed wood ceilings and windows/glass block accents. The pool/sundeck is difficult to leave also with the same mesmerizing view; you are close to the kitchen and the blender. Sit and watch the sailboats pound there way windward between you and Booby Island. The small Bermuda grass yard/garden oasis welcomes you in. I enjoyed the healthy hike up the neighborhood streets featuring Dr Seuss like 20% grades. Both directions will take you up the comical concrete switchbacks to views that are not to be missed; breakfast--on your deck upon your return is also that much better. We came to kite board and hooked up with Jeff at St Kitts Water Sports who operates out of Reggae Beach 2 min away. We were kiting at 10am 2 min walk down to our seemingly private beach. Snorkeling Turtle reef we found 50 baby lobster, eagle ray, turtles, and a plethora of tangs. It blew 20 knots the whole time which we loved and the trip to Nevis to mountain bike ride and jeep tour is a blast. Spice Mill Restaurant serves impeccable Wahoo and Mahi--ask for Nestle Nesbit she is outstanding. Wonderfully well designed house in a terrific location--If you are a kite boarder, waterman, or just love what the planet offers, rent this house from Nick and Cathy today.

Aaaaahhh!

I could repeat all the superlatives others have included in their reviews. The astonishing views, the terrific deck and pool area, the breezy feeling of the whole place. The best vacation here is one dedicated to kicking back and just enjoying the house and its location. Unfortunately we had to go back and forth up-island a number of times and the road to Basseterre (especially the "outback" section just out from the house) was a bear. But we knew this before we went and so rented the SUV from Dwayne the property manager. Much thanks to him for making our arrival and departure sweat-free. And for getting the wi-fi up and running. To be honest many of the things provided in the house (which is well tricked out) went unused - why watch tv when you've got a night view of the lights of Nevis? We were 4 adults and one very active toddler. We'd been told the house would be a challenge regarding the latter but we developed a routine to ensure she was never left alone and that not only provided safety for her but some exercise for us. Bedrooms were exceptional as were the baths and the kitchen. The barbecue was much appreciated. The only disappointment for us was the windy weather (trade winds?) that were roaring from the east much of the time. The result of these was some trouble with the nanna door and sheltering at poolside. Also it meant that Turtle Beach (only a two minus walk down the hill) went unused by us and unenjoyed, except for beachcombing. The water was so rough we couldn't swim or snorkel (a shame) and the mountains of seaweed and turtle grass made the beach uninviting. BUT just 10 minutes walk got us to the calmer waters, bars and restaurants on Cockleshell. Not exactly a hardship. Do yourself a favour and make a trek to Jam Rock beach bar and grill on south friars. Amazing food. All in all, notwithstanding our need to go back and forth on the island and our adventures with the toddler, the house worked its magic. You just feel good at the end of it all.

A Million Dollar View!

The island of St Kitts is shaped like a comma. The capital is Basetere and it is in the middle of the comma. North of Basettere is where most Kittitians live. Immediately south of Basseterre is the area of Frigate Bay with hotels, restaurants and a few beaches. Now if one heads south-east from Basseterre, one heads into an area of hills, coves and bays. It is in this very beautiful area that this villa is situated.

About 2 miles from the the southeastern tip of St Kitts (not very far from where the villa is) is the island of Nieves. The two islands are separated by the Narrows, about a 2 mile stretch of ocean connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and this is the view one has from the balcony of the villa and the bedrooms! Just awesome!

The house perches on the side of a hill and is about 5 min by foot to the beach.

This is probably one of the most well-built homes I have rented on VRBO. It is in a quiet, safe and secluded area. There us no nightlife! The bedrooms and family room face the ocean bringing in the sea breeze. There are mosquito nets everywhere to prevent those bites. The home is CLEAN. Th kitchen is very nice and well-stocked.

We didn't have internet access for a few days but that was an island-wide problem.

The infinity pool is small but does it's job. There is a much bigger pool not too far away called the OCEAN!

The caretaker is nice and very helpful. He has a small SUV he rents out. MY advice - GET IT!. it is nice, newer and well-kept.

As mentioned earlier, there is a small beach about 5 min down the hill. The waves are strong there and with strong winds, seaweed tends to collect. About less than a 10 min drive will get you to Cockleshell beach. Get there early to avoid the crowds from the cruise ships. The same amount of driving time will get you to Majors Bay. The beach there is totally not commercialized and affords a "Robinson-Crusoe"-like experience.

There are 2 beach bars/restaurants which stay open to about 6 - Lion Rock and Reggae Bar. The Spice Mill stays open longer.

One has to drive to Frigate Bay or Basseterre for groceries. The road is not very good but manageable with an SUV. The road twists and turns through the hills with breathtaking views of both the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. Driving on it after sunset is challenging.

So, if you want a very clean, nice and secluded villa with amazing ocean and mountain views, don't look any further.

We rented this lovely house over Christmas and it was enjoyed by the whole family. The rooms are delightful in particular the ground floor, which enjoys a magnificent view of Nevis across the water, with the lights that twinkle in the distance at night. Kitchen, living room, deck and master bedroom are all well situated on this floor. The pool provides a cooling splash as a contrast to the several nice beaches at this end of the island.

Turtle beach is the nicest part of the island, enjoying a lovely breezy climate and privacy from the madding crowds.

The house is very well managed by a helpful local, who is available for help if required.

Great House and Island

My husband and I just got back from a week in St. Kitts at this house on Turtle Beach. The house is perfect with every possible amenity you need. We have rented several houses in the Caribbean and this is our favorite by far. The pool looked small in photos but was perfect for a dip and splash around. The neighborhood was quiet and safe and away from any cruise ship tours! The restaurants all have great food, our favorite was Marshall's but also loved Spice Mill close to the home as well as Reggae Beach Bar. We are adventurous so did a hike to the top of the volcano with Captain Sunshine. If you are active, it is worth the trip, so beautiful and a hike we will never forget. Owner's Response: We were happy to hear Amy and her husband adventured out on one of the many great hikes. Both St. Kitts and Nevis offer several routes up these inactive volcanoes, and the views can be spectacular. Taking a guide is a smart thing to do and can save time and frustration in finding the correct and safest route.
