SWEET COTTAGE BY LAKE

  • 5 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Red Cottage. It is across a dirt road from Little Sebago Lake which is a beautiful, pretty quiet, clear, clean lake. The hill down to the lake is a bit steep for those with mobility issues but we did have a problem at all. Good exercise for the legs!
The beach area was sandy and the entrance gradual. We appreciated having access to both a scanoe and a paddle/pedal boat. We were able to row over to the little island five minutes away, and explore and swim. It offers a sandy, very clean area, perfect for swimming and cooling off. Make sure you take the quick trip!
In the morning and evenings you could hear the loons--such a peaceful sound.
We also appreciated being able to take our dog who loves water. He wanted to go down by the lake every chance he could. The deck is roomy with a comfortable patio set with center fire pit. We lit fires and sat out on the deck every night. It also has a gate so you don't have to worry about your dog getting out.
The cottage itself was immaculately clean and nicely appointed. It has a large, comfortable leather sofa and two rocking chairs. But we spent most of our time outside. Also there was an issue with the cable box in the living room but again, we did not spend much time indoors so it did not affect us.
The shower is small but that is to be expected in a rustic environment. It has great water pressure though and we never ran out of hot water.
One bedroom has a full bed and cable television. The other has two bunk beds. Great for kids!
The kitchen is very well stocked with all manner of pots, pans, and all sorts of different sized bowls, platters, Rubbermaid storage containers, nice dishes, mugs, wine glasses -- everything you could need.
We were lucky that we were there during comfortable weather and never minded that there was no air conditioning. Each room had a fan.
Every effort was made to make sure we had everything we needed. When we had an issue with the cable box, the owner was prompt with her reply and had her handiman come over to check to see what he could do. Communication was excellent before and during our stay.
The adjoining cottage is close but we had wonderful neighbors who also had two dogs. Just keep in mind that you will share the beach and boats with them.
Portland is close by and I highly recommend taking advantage of its close proximity. Delightful city!
Overall this was a terrific rental. Thanks so much for letting us stay!

A CHARMING AND RUSTIC MAINE COTTAGE FOR THE WIRED AGE

  • 5 of 5
My family and I rented the "Red Haven" for our annual trip to Maine, and we had a wonderful stay. It's a rustic place, but with all the modern amenities for those who like to stay connected: cable, wireless, etc...

The front deck is wonderful and huge, perfect for barbecuing on the large, old-school charcoal grill! (Everything tastes better on a charcoal grill).

On a special note, there is an amazing leather couch in the sitting area. My father, who is retired after many years of working as an executive in the footwear industry, insisted that the couch is made of "some of the finest leather I've ever seen." Pretty ringing endorsement from an old expert, and a pretty nifty and unexpected thing to find in a lake cottage.

The beach area is directly across the street and is wonderfully maintained. It's a sandy, shallow entry beach front, making it perfect for kids. My 3 and 6-year-olds hardly left the water the entire time we were there.

LITTLE RED COTTAGE A FUN PLACE TO STAY

  • 4 of 5
This rustic little cottage was a fun place to stay during our recent trip to Maine. The owners keep it very neat and clean and are extremely accommodating. There are lovely rustic decorations in all the rooms. You can tell it was decorated with love. : )

A couple things we might suggest is to inform renters of no air conditioning in the cottage (if you are not from the region) and instructions on how to turn on the cable TV (especially for non-techies like us)! Also, the shower is small.

The cabin is located directly across the road from the lake and has a wonderful sandy beach and dock. We enjoyed swimming in the beautiful clear lake - especially since it almost hit 90 degrees while we were there.

There are two close small towns (Gray & Windham) near the cabin for grocery shopping, restaurants and ice cream. Would highly recommend Goody's Pizza in Gray. It was absolutely delicious! We found a cute and tasty little ice cream stand in Windham on SR 115 on the east side of town (north side of road). Can't remember the name, but it was a catchy phrase with two words. One other recommendation is the Fisherman's Catch lobster shack north of Windham on SR 302. Excellent lobster rolls and you can dine in or take out.

Also recommend driving east (about an hour) to the city of Brunswick then over to State Road 24 and south to Bailey Island. The drive is beautiful. And there's a great seafood restaurant on the Island called Cook's Lobster House near the crib stone bridge. And you have to go to Freeport to the Harraseeket Inn for the Sunday buffet. Best meal we had the whole trip for $24.95 per person - it spoiled us the first full day we were there.

Enjoy a relaxing vacation at this cute and rustic cabin!

WHAT A MUCH NEEDED RELAXING WEEK!

  • 5 of 5
This was our second time visiting Maine, and it was the best family vacation we have had so far. The place was perfect for our family - my husband and I, our daughter, and my mother-in-law. I cannot say enough how much I loved the red cottage. It was quaint, warm, inviting, and so tranquil. I have been to other places that felt outdated and old. Not the red cottage. The decor was so lovely, I even inquired from the owner where they purchased a few of the items. That was a first for me! The house was also fully stocked, even a lobster pot. The Maine lobster was fantastic along with the steak grilled on site. Surf and turf never tasted better. Also, the owners, were attentive to our needs and answered all of our questions. We requested sheets so we would not have to pay extra fees for baggage, and they provided them. We asked them to recommend some things to do, and they sent us so many suggestions that we didn't know where to start. The owner also called just to make sure things were as expected and that we were having a good time. We imagined we would do a lot of sight seeing in Maine, but we hardly left because our daughter (7 yrs old) loved swimming in the lake. She had a goal to swim to the floating dock. She was a good swimmer, but that dock was far for her. My husband of course challenged her to a swim. The first few days, she just couldn't do it. But, she would not give up. There was something so magical there that she had to do it. And, by day 5 she did it! I did not think I would get her to leave the water after that! That memory is etched in her mind and mine forever. The nicest part was enjoying family time. We can't say enough about our stay and look forward to returning.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

  • 5 of 5
My wife, 2 & 5 year old girls, and 6 year old lab stayed in the Red Cottage. We had a great time living the lake house vacation. Barefoot all week, swimming in crystal clear water (sandy clean bottom, gradual entry), exploring the little sandbar island a 5 min canoe/kayak ride off shore. It was beautiful and made lasting memories. The owners do a very nice job detialing every expectation of what is to be found once you walk through the door. It was exactly as is shown in the pictures. They also do a great job of providing nearby attractions should you find a rain day keeping you out of the water. We went to the Desert of Maine and Wildlife park nearby and they were fun for the kids and entertaining for us too. Locals were very friendly and you have the beach to yourself with the neighboring cottage. We made some lifelong friends and continue to tell stories of our time spent here. Sleeping accomodations were pleasant, living area was nicely staged, kitchen was large, deck area is large and inviting with the patio furniture and wrap around bench seating. We did not spend much time inside. Our dog and kids spent the entire week splashing and swimming. Warm sunny days and cool quiet nights, there are only a few houses past this property so there is little to no car traffic, so it was safe/comfortable for the kids to be outside without constant supervision. The property is well kept and hopefully that continues as we plan to return real soon to spend another week and add some new memories.

A KITTIES AND KAYAK VACATION

  • 5 of 5
The Kitties and I had a fantastic vacation in this charming cottage on a beautiful, loon-filled lake! The cottage is so well maintained and filled with all I needed for a comfortable week of rest and activity! Having access to the web enabled me to work on some writing projects yet able to easily take time out for an exploring paddle or a swim in the lake. The location is quiet, yet friendly people are nearby. My kitties were comfortable wandering outside or curling up on the couch with me for a cuddle. I visited the nearby Shaker Village and road-side vegetable stands to partake of the early autumn bounty. Apples and mulled cider on the cold nights were a comforting way to end my day. I want to come back next year! Thank you to the owners for being helpful and gracious.
