As long time residents of the Victoria area, Ken and Fern are very familiar with the many activities and amenities available in Victoria or anywhere on Vancouver Island. Ken is an avid sports fisherman and is very familiar with sports fishing opportunities. Fern has kayaked most of the Vancouver Island and adjoining Gulf Island waters. Evidence of our enjoyment of gardening is immediately visible especially from spring through fall. As your hosts, we take our cues from you. We are happy to provide Island information and respect that some guests prefer their privacy.

The suite is located in a quiet neighbourhood across the street from a public pier that overlooks lovely Deep Cove harbour and the Saanich inlet.
The property is located in a quiet area suited to many outdoor activities as well as having easy access to restaurants, shopping, transportation (ferries/ airport) and the Institute of Ocean Sciences. Many people enjoy kayaking in the calm waters of the Saanich Inlet and we were drawn to the rural charm of the area.
My night staying at SunShadows B&B was very peaceful and a welcome change from my time in Vancouver. This B&B is located in North Saanich (near the BC Ferries station), and it was very convenient for spending time at Butchart Gardens and traveling down to Victoria for exploring the Inner Harbour and the Parliamentary Building. I was able to meet with Fern, and she was very accommodating and flexible with my arrival time. Thanks again! :)
We booked this suite for 5 nights in order to use it as a base to explore the southern part of the island, including Victoria. We originally looked at hotels in the city but decided that we'd prefer to stay in a VRBO property because of the more personal experience. We chose this suite based on the previous reviews and are so glad we did.
As the other reviewers have mentioned, the suite is immaculate and extremely comfortable. The surrounding area is very peaceful and the harbour is only a short stroll down the road (great for sunset photos). Sidney is a short drive away and we enjoyed exploring the shoreline as well as its shops and restaurants. We also went into Victoria several times and it was great to leave the city in the evening and retreat to the cosy suite.
Ken & Fern gave us such a warm welcome and gave us plenty of tips on what to see locally. We really enjoyed our time here and would definitely look to return the next time we're visiting the Island. Many thanks to them for such a great stay.
One of the best rentals we've ever experienced! The studio itself was just lovely. It was the perfect amount of space for the two of us plus it was nicely decorated and SPOTLESS! It had a very peaceful and zen feel to it. The unit overlooks a gorgeous garden and is surrounded by tall trees. With the front door opened, you really feel like you're in a tree-house. Ken and Fern were wonderful hosts -- so kind, friendly and informative, and really made you feel at home. They very generously stocked the fridge with a variety of breakfast items, including eggs, yogurt, cheese, cream/milk and juice, as well as gluten-free bread items (since we are both gluten intolerant)!! They even set out chocolates here and there ;) This was way more than we had expected, all around. On top of it, we had the best nights sleep we've had in ages (we were there 4 nights). The bed and blankets were so comfortable and even the towels were plushy soft!
Although the town itself is small, there is quite a bit to do in the general area. We went to Buchart Gardens (and timed it just right -- the symphony was playing -- every tuesday eve, the Victoria symphony plays); kayaked in Sidney (about a 10 minutes drive); went to a wonderful street festival (held every Thurs night) in Sidney; walked to the nearby winery for lunch and tastings (1 mile away); took long walks in Deep Cove (pier is a block away); and visited Victoria two times (25 minute drive).
Btw, we were so pleased with our decision to stay in Deep Cove over Victoria. We were visiting from Chicago, so Deep Cove was a perfectly peaceful spot for us. It was such an easy drive to Victoria which is a wonderful city but pretty busy/congested.
Overall, we definitely would very highly recommend Sunshadows and hope to visit again one day!
Ken and Fern were delightful hosts and very responsive to our needs. It almost felt like we were visiting friends or family. The suite was impeccably clean and clearly attention was paid to detail. Bikes were available for our use and the night we enjoyed the outdoor fireplace was romantic and private. Close to the marina and easy access to the pat bay highway gave us both a vacation hideaway and means to do business in Victoria. The landscaping was beautiful and it was a treat to explore the backyard of our b and b as much as any tourist attraction. I hope we have the opportunity to stay at Ken and Fern's again.
We were pleasantly surprised upon our arrival at our VRBO. Ken and Fern greeted us upon our arrival. The pictures on their web page do not do it justice. This is the most beautiful garden and surrounding we have ever stayed. Not to mention the hospitality of Ken and Fern. They gave us lists of places to see, places to eat, and all types of information about Victoria and surrounding towns. We split our vacation between Vancouver and Victoria. The only mistake we made was we should have spent more time here than in Vancouver. If anyone is looking for a beautiful and relaxing place to stay, we recommend very highly. If we make it back to BC, no doubt this will definitely be our destination. We would give this VRBO the highest rating possible. Thanks Ken and Fern.
When I inquired about the suite, I knew I was going to have a fantastic experience from the response I received from Ken. Both Ken and Fern were so helpful in assisting me with finding a place to rent a bicycle and maps to help me on my travels. They are excellent at Customer Service.
I loved the cozy suite . .it was so personable! I felt very much at home! It was so nice to have a restful sleep after touring on the bicycle all day in this quiet little haven. The yard and suite are just like the pictures they show on the VRBO site.
My purpose was to cycle everywhere. This location was PERFECT for this. This area is so bicycle friendly . . .and the Lochside trail is nearby. If I needed the bus . . it was just around the corner. The shopping in Sidney was excellent. And there are lots of places to go for a hike.
I had a wonderful time and will definitely be back. Guaranteed!
It is a short walk to a public pier, calm ocean kayaking waters, 10 minutes drive to the Victoria airport or ferries to Vancouver and Washington State, minutes from Butchart Gardens or excellent shopping in Sidney-by- the-Sea and for enthusiasts, bicycles are available on request and tennis courts one mile away.
