This was one of the first school houses up the creek in New Castle, and the only one of 4 preserved. It is comfy and has a nice deck for a fantastic view up the Porter Ranch to the sunlight ski resort.
We welcome you and your pets to our first rental on the Ranch, and have listed another rental called the elk experience for rent on vrbo as well!!
We offer a fantastic kitchen for the chef in you, and provide a bowl of farm fresh eggs when in season! We are centrally located to a plethora of activities, or...just flop at the Cabin and get away from it all! X country ski on the ranch in the winter, or soak in the famous Glenwood Hot springs..climb in Rifle, hunt in Section 42, go to the play, ski Sunlight, Vail or Aspen, all are close! OR Horseback ride with us, galloping across the fields, or introduce your child to our miniature horses!! Grab some herbs and greens from the garden and enjoy them on the front porch with your family, and relax in the glider. Life is good. We welcome you with open arms to our world. It is unique and simple, and you will love it.
Keywords: Chef's kitchen, great views, on a private ranch just minutes from glenwood springs, elk bugle next to the window, horseback rides are available, peace on the front porch, sleeps six
Terry was born to the ranch and this life. He and I run this Ranch as a couple, and make a good team..but without our Jax, Washa Walker, Castle Pines Penelope, and the Grande Dam, Foxy....and the rest of the critters, we would be pretty boring.
Terry and Mary purchased this cabin in 1898
our cabin is historical and special. A glimpse of real ranch life is fascinating to others, we have found. Please relax and unwind up here, we welcome you.
We are so close to the hot springs, or our local's hot pots, as we call them, and really love the privacy and the solitude that we can offer to the world. we are minutes away from world class rock climbing as well, and have had climbers as far away as germany stay here for weeks. Please let us show you the elk pen cabin as well as this one, and NOW we are going underground! whooo hooo...never a dull moment here!
We just returned from the perfect weekend getaway. Our stay at Porter Ranch could not have been better. First off, the Holiday Out cabin is adorable and perfect if you are looking to disconnect. The kitchen is large and spacious- we loved cooking our dinner and breakfast. The bed upstairs is unbelievably comfortable... seriously, it was difficult to get up in the morning! I will say that the house is perfect for a couple or a family of 4 as the other beds are two small cots. However the house is not even the best part... Mary and Terry could not have been kinder hosts. We were hoping to take a horseback ride early Sunday morning, but due to an extensive amount of rain, we were unable to. A couple of hours later, we received a knock at the door and it was Mary offering to take us with she and Terry to watch them move their herd of elk and explore their other cabin. We had the best time! The other cabin at the top of the elk pen is adorable with stunning 360 views. We are already in the process of making plans to come back out and stay with friends and hopefully shoot an elk. The cabin is a short 15 minutes to Glenwood Springs and 5 to New Castle. If you are looking to leave the ranch for a little while, it is easy to find activities nearby.
Thank you Mary and Terry for such a wonderful trip. We could not have enjoyed ourselves more and we are looking forward to our next stay at the Porter Ranch.
Thank you Mary and Terry for a great labor day weekend. Your school house is great. We loved the great big room with kitchen. It was great for kids. Our grandson loved getting the chicken eggs and he loved your "rent a dog" that slept with us one night. We listened to bugling elk and watched flocks of geese fly on and off the pond. We hiked and made "smores" outside on the grill. Thank you so much. We had a wonderful time.
We recently stayed at the cabin with our family of 4 (kids ages 3 & 6) and the family dog. This place was better than we anticipated. Mary and Terry are the quintessential hosts while the scenery, animals, and nature take care of the rest. The location is only ~ 10 -15 min from Glenwood Springs where we spent most of our time. We WILL be heading back, the only question is how soon. The steps to the second level are steep for young children or disabled/elderly, however they had gates available if needed (our kiddos did fine). Amenities are just a short drive away. It was great to escape phone, tv and internet and get back to the basics. The cabin stayed cool at night and was just fine during the day with a window unit, fans, or just opening windows.
We enjoyed the stay at the cabin. The girls especially liked all animals. What a variety! We do miss Foxy the most. She was quite the hostess. Stayed with us most of the time, chased away cows, played great with our rat terrier, and followed the girls all over the ranch. So fun!
My family and I visited porter ranch over Labor Day weekend! It was a total blast! While visiting downtown, relaxing in the hot springs, and visiting adventure park, we were provided an excellent home. There was endless elk bratwurst and unlimited eggs that came right from Mary’s chicken pen! It was beautiful views of the cows, elk and of course the Glenwood Mountains. I really enjoyed riding Mary’s horses and collecting eggs from the chickens. Waking up to the sound of a cow’s moo, an elk’s whine, and the squawk of chickens, gave me the sense of how a real cowgirl lived, Thank you for letting us stay at your Porter Ranch and I can’t wait to visit your place again!
-Dasha and her family!
We called up Mary and Terry hoping to get away for a short weekend and couldn't have been happier with our stay. The cabin is on a quiet ranch a bit outside of Glenwood Springs but close enough to do anything you want in the area.
Their domestic elk herd is literally right behind you and you can hear them locking antlers in the evening and making the occasional bugle call.
The cabin was clean, spacious and exactly what we envisioned when seeing the photos. It was a bit hot in the evenings but the cabin had fans that helped cool the place down quickly. The cabin also had anything we needed including delicious farm-fresh eggs and delicious elk sausages - on the house.
All in all, a perfect little getaway.
Whitewater Rafting and Horseback Riding for the ultimate day in the Mountains, we call it the paddle and saddle program, call us to see the discounts if you do both !!!
ALSO, we enjoy snow shoeing in the winter, with plenty of hills to climb or sled down off of. We are the only place on the earth where you stay right next to our elk herd. Listen to the whistles and bugles in the fall, and watch our speckled babies in the spring. Our birds and wildlife are protected here on the Ranch, and we have many exotic species that stop over here for safety and solitude. Do it yourself, ...nothing to chirp or whistle artificially. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Unwind and enjoy our cabins. ..another one being built on top of our world. complete with yoga glassed in studio. so cool.
