RIVERFRONT HISTORIC CABIN IN THE HEART OF THE WINE COUNTRY

Santa Ynez Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Step back into time and experience what life must have been on a ranch in the 20's. This cottage isn't for everyone, but for those of you who are looking for character, charm, authenticity and a one of a kind experience this may be just right. Built in the 1920's as a bunkhouse for the ranch hands, this one of a kind piece of California history located on the Santa Ynez River. Perfect for a couple seeking romance and privacy or two couples wanting to explore the wine region and the many excellent restaurants. This is a far cry from most rentals. Furnished with antiques, leather chairs, down furniture, ceiling fans, books on every subject, original New Yorker drawings, abstract western oil paintings, and more.... You're a guest in a private home and you will feel the warmth of of another time and place. Don't be surprised if you start the first chapter of that novel you've been putting off for too long.

I am a Santa Barbara native with a long history in the Santa Ynez Valley.

This home was slated to be torn down. Thanks to the rental income, it has been resurected, restored and brought back to being part o Santa Ynez Valley history. In todays world this home could never be recreated, largely due to it's proximity to the Santa Ynez River.

The uniqueness of the property is that gives you a feeling that you could be in Spain, Italy or even Argentina. The Santa Ynez Valley is like no other place, so near and yet so far. I enjoy reading, listening to Coltrane, Waller, cooking for friends, exploring the back country and hiking the many trails.

WEEKEND AWAY!

  • 5 of 5
I just spent the most wonderful weekend at the Riverhouse! We loved every second. The house is charming! We spent hours sitting and chatting at the picnic table on the back patio. The living room is comfortable and inviting. Karl was wonderful to deal with and the location is great. We were in Los Olivos and Solvang in minutes. The place is secluded and quiet, but just a few minutes from downtown. I would love to go back when the river is full and flowing. Enjoy your time there!

HEATHER

My family and I have been coming to this beautiful cabin repeatedly for the past couple of years. My little boy is so enamored that he asks constantly to go to "the Froggy House", an oasis of calm set on the banks of a beautiful, frog-chirping and duck-paddled river. The cabin is from another time of quietude, peace, and "rustic chic" - a true throwback to old California. The owner, Karl, takes great pride in hand-selecting his linens, artwork, and decor, and both his love of the place and great taste shines through. We hope to return here time and time again for many years to come!

THIS PLACE IS EVERYTHING THAT IS DESCRIBED EXCEPT FOR ONE (PRETTY BIG) DRAWBACK

  • 4 of 5
This historic cabin is just as described and more (except for one detail and I’ll get to that in a minute).
We are two couples who travel together regularly as well as staying in each other’s homes when visiting the other’s state. We greatly enjoyed the cozy, historic, charming, eclectic feel of this cabin. The location is fabulous in its isolation just a few miles from amenities and activities. It is almost the last thing down the road and we had virtually zero traffic come by while we were there. We got to see deer on the way into town and enjoy the sound of the river at the back of the property. The back porch is a quiet place for a cup of coffee and a book, the courtyard is perfect for a nice meal al fresco, and the living room is full of vintage collections amid some very nice and comfortable furniture. We did not try the fire place as it was warm when we were there, but it is beautiful and inviting. Though small, the kitchen is adequate and we did prepare one meal there. And there is a decent sized dining room if the weather doesn’t permit outdoor dining. The bedrooms are not huge, but are fine although the mattressin the guest room could stand to be updated. My husband and I kept rolling into the center (good thing we like each other!).
Here’s the ONLY drawback and it will be minor to some and MAJOR to others. I just think consumers should be fully informed and I would have appreciated knowing this: As the description states, there is one bathroom. No big deal for our particular group except that the one bathroom is actually a pass-through to the master bedroom…not very private for the couple that may be trying to sleep during the night, and VERY awkward for the 2nd couple who must invade that space in order to use the toilet. There is a sink in the 2nd bedroom and an outdoor shower (for those that are willing) that alleviate traffic jams. But having the only toilet be right on the other side of a old (read not soundproof) door could be a deal-breaker for some.
I’d go back in a heartbeat, but not with another couple.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you found the bathroom arrangement to be a "pretty big drawback". This is the first comment we have received in reference to this. Clearly, two couples sharing one bathroom is not ideal, which is the reason for our installing a vanity in the guest bedroom. The architectural layout of this old bunkhouse is typical of this kind of cabin. The bathroom has three doors, anyone of which can be locked, depending on which room guests are staying in. I do agree that guests, particularly couples need to consider the single bathroom limitation. Regarding the guest room mattress. This mattress was new two years ago when we converted the studio into a guest room. I will certainly look into this, and take appropriate action. We appreciate your review and are pleased that you otherwise enjoyed your stay.We hope you will come stay with us again.

CHARMING CABIN FILLED WITH CHARACTER

  • 5 of 5
We just left Santa Ynez and already miss the Riverhouse. If you are looking for a unique experience, where you feel like you are staying in a home and not a rental, than this is the place. From the second we walked in the cabin, we knew we picked the right spot. Charming and rustic but definitely with a stylish touch. Well appointed with great historical artifacts, intelligent novels and interesting art and antiques. We found ourselves wanting to know more about everything in the house. We cooked dinner and ate in the courtyard under the stars, plenty of dishware, tablecloths and other items to create a beautiful table. We enjoyed the cool breeze at night and retired to the living room for some wine and cards with friends. The rooms are comfortable and on opposites sides of the house. We thought this was perfect for two couples and we didn't mind sharing the bathroom. The location feels very removed, even though we were about 10-15 minutes to Los Olivos where we spent a lot of time. We definitely 'unplugged' and really felt relaxed. We will definitely be back and want to thank Karl for opening up his home to total strangers. It was a truly unique experience!

A WONDERFUL PEACEFUL RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent a relaxing three days watching birds, hiking through the beautiful woods and pastures and sitting by an inviting fire. The cabin might be rustic, but it is very comfortable and has all the conveniences we wanted. It's perfect for a couple looking for a romantic getaway. The cabin is also filled with fascinating memorabilia and a selection of good books. All in all, one of our favorite vacations in a long time. Thank you, Karl!

TRANQUIL WEEKEND WITH FAMILY

  • 5 of 5
My husband, I and two little boys, 5 and 9, had a lovely weekend at this adorable cottage! We definitely aim to return with my parents or friends in tow. Beautifully decorated, tucked away facing a river. Loved taking outdoor showers facing the river! The kids loved splashing in the river, catching and releasing little fish (bring a net and bucket) and even found a beaver dam! Karl was a friendly and laid back host. He very generously let us stay until 6 pm on our last day, which makes a weekend in the country with children a far more relaxed and enjoyable affair!

It is quiet and remote feeling, but really close to Santa Ynez and surrounding wine country. Well set up for lovely meals and socializing outside or in, and great big living room and fireplace that we want to return to in colder weather. Rustic yet sophisticated in decor, and super comfortable. It truly feels like a home not a rental. Beds and linens are luxurious!

Helpful information: The 2 bedrooms are at opposite ends of the L-shaped house. Great for two couples. My husband and I had to split up because the kids didn't want to be alone so far away from us, although if we had stayed longer they may have adjusted. There are two original built in lower bunk beds in the living room that currently serve as window seats, that could cutely handle kids or overflow, which we didn't try. Also, you must walk through the bathroom to get to the main bedroom. There is a door to the veranda from the bedroom, so I escaped and came in through the kitchen once, when a child closed me out!

For us, none of these small quirks outweighed the real pleasures of staying here. Our whole family loved it. We will be back for sure!
