Today Harbour Island is regarded as one of the gems not only of the Bahamas, but also of the whole Caribbean region. Its fabulous three mile pink coral beach is rightly seen as the biggest tourist magnet as well as the friendly locals and its fantastic array of stylish restaurants and boutique hotels.

If you know Harbour Island, then you know all about the quaint “New England” architecture that takes on a distinct Caribbean and Colonial style that manifests itself in the heart of Dunmore Town.
Strawberry House not only defines this style but also has become one of the most photographed and painted houses with its iconic octagonal weather-vane tower and its delicious strawberry colored exterior.
Reputedly built around 1840, the House is one of the few limestone houses on the island and was originally built for the renowned local Albury family – at one time was the local hardware store.

Last year the house changed owners and has been extensively, but sympathetically renovated to make the three bedroom, three bath accommodation suitable for 21st century living. As Its new British owners’ winter residence they have lavishly equipped Strawberry House with a custom designed full kitchen incorporating upscale appliances, beautiful silver gray travertine bathrooms and an amazing outside entertaining area which includes a covered outdoor kitchen and rose color granite countertops. Yet they have retained the feel of a historic Bahamian house.
Inspired by cool gray driftwood tones the house has a light airy feel with the whole of the ground floor magnificently tiled in silver travertine tiles and the walls beautifully faux finished to create a truly inspiring overall impression.
A cathedral style pecky cypress ceiling has been beautifully pickled and enables two Fanimation twin fans to steal the limelight. The whole ceiling is surrounded by a beautiful 12 inch coving which conceals lighting that adds a beautiful luster in the evening. The walls are faux finished by a local painter in cream and beige tones to contrast the original dark stained abaco pine floorboards.
Re-furnished with upscale furniture from Drexel Heritage and Restoration Hardware.
The kitchen has been designed for practicality and entertaining. Two long Corian countertops are framed with a superb double bowl granite sink. A custom fit French Door Fridge Freezer, a beverage cooler for wine, together with Kitchen Aid Dishwasher, Cooker, Warming Drawer and Microwave make up the essentials of the kitchen.
Whilst the old master bedroom was large (by Bahamian Cottage standards) – the master bath was tiny and featured a tiny shower room and washbasin. By radically redesigning the available space the new owners have created a truly beautiful master suite that includes twin closets, twin bowl vanity unit, a separate shower and a luxurious slipper tub. The whole bathroom has full height silver travertine tiles accented by complementary mosaic and dado tiles. Kohler faucets and a unique floor mounted mixer faucet for the tub. A shutter wall in distressed maple divides the bathroom from the bedroom affording as much or as little privacy as required.
The master bedroom is dominated by a Queen bed from Heavenly at Westin® and has two mirrored nightstands. Either the remote controlled air conditioning unit or the stylish Fanimation ceiling fan achieves a comfortable temperature. The décor is the same as the upstairs living area with a blend of cream, beiges and grays. French doors lead to a private terrace for early morning coffee or breakfast.
A motorized drop down lift conceals the 32” Flatscreen TV to enable a great garden view.
2nd Master Suite
The bedroom has another Queen bed from Heavenly at Westin® with antique ivory nightstands and matching headboards. A mirrored armoire provides ample storage space together with a tall cupboard. Like the main master, air conditioning is remote controlled and a Fanimation® fan offers an alternative. The bedroom is decorated in light blue to complement the view through to the pool by way of full-length plantation shutters to the bath.
A 26inch flatscreen TV is fixed to the wall.
The adjoining bathroom has a delightful vanity unity with marble countertop and a tub and integrated shower. Plantation shutters in the bathroom offer privacy from the pool. Once again full height silver travertine tiling is used in the bath with matching flooring
In order to offer flexible accommodation the second guest bedroom has twin beds in a stunning weathered oak with matching nighstand and dresser.
Again a 26inch Flatscreen TV, a Mitsubishi a/c unit and a Fanimation fan complete the bedroom.
Adjacent to the bedroom is a charming “Jack and Jill” shower room with a vanity unit that matches the bedroom furniture. As ever silver travertine is used throughout and weathered oak plantation shutters offer privacy.

Andrew and Pauline have been married for over thirty years and originate from England. We have two sons and a gorgeous granddaughter born in March of this year.
In 2006 we were fortunate to take early retirement and discovered Harbour Island. Since then we have spent much of our winter on the island and spend the summer in the south of France.
We enjoy skiing, boating, a bit of fishing and drinking Provence rose interspersed with the odd gin and tonic.
This is not a vacation rental in the ordinary sense of the meaning as we spend a good few months at the property. As such we have furnished the property as a home rather than as merely an income generator.
Therefore Strawberry House has been a labour of love, lavishing neat touches and upscale fittings and fixtures to ensure a luxurious living experience.
