My husband and I moved to Costa Rica from British Columbia, Canada in 1982. We fell in love with this area of Guanacaste, bought our farm and settled here. In the following years we raised our family of four children and developed a canopy (zipline) tour on our farm. Widowed in 2006, my children and I are dedicated to conserving the dry tropical forest on our lands, sharing the local wonders with tourists from around the world, and as of 2011, offering convenient and comfortable accomodation for travellers.

Deborah purchased this apartment in 2010

In 1982 Samara was fairly isolated but with pristine local beaches... Carrillo, Samara, Camaronal, Buena Vista. Lush and filled with wildlife, there was also enough community here to offer an interesting local school option for our very young children.

Nowadays Samara has all the conveniences of good roads, modern telecommunications, shopping options and a core community of Costa Ricans whose way of life still embodies 'pura vida', i.e. connectedness to the surrounding natural beauty and a 'laid-back' lifestyle. Samara Beach is world-renowned for its safety as a swimming beach. Our community offers a popular local language school, massage school, yoga classes, surf schools, a spa, as well as all ocean-related activities including seasonal whale and dolphin-watching.

The Mardelindo Apartment is located 1 km. from the town center, easy walking distance, and a scant 100 m. from the beach for the pleasure of all of you ocean lovers.

EXCEPTIONAL!

  • 5 of 5
We spent 2 weeks of our Costa Rican vacation at this apartment. What a delightful "home away from home". The respect that Deborah has for her clients is evident the moment you walk through the door. It is immaculate with special attention given to detail. From the tasteful furnishings and well thought out touches..all to ensure a comfortable stay. The photos of the property looked lovely and the reviews positive however this apartment did exceed our expectations.

Ziplining..apprehensive at first but Deborah assured us that the tour would be safe and great fun. How right she was! We had a great time! The guides were jovial, friendly and patient.

A short walk into town and a 5 minute walk to the beach, this has to be the jewel of Samara.. Deborahs kindness, friendly disposition, integrity and a wish to provide a positive experience are a stand out and we look forward to our next visit.

THE PLACE TO BE IN SAMARA

  • 5 of 5
We have spend 3 weeks in Samara to learn Spanish in the Intercultura language school. During this time we lived in this apartment and it was just fantastic. Deborah and her family are very friendly and it felt like to stay in a place, well furnished with love and a sence for the detail. It’s a very stylish apartment on two floors, two bathrooms, own Loundry, outside shower, BBQ grill and a very well equipped kitchen. The beautiful beach is in less than 5 min. within walking distance. We hope to be back one day!

PARADISE IN PARADISE!!

  • 5 of 5
When we first walked through the door we said "Wow - were we ever lucky to find this place". Well, we've been here a month now and we're still saying it. We still have a month to go and we know already that we'll be back. There's a balance here that's quite rare. All of the accolades in the other reviews are more than true - beautifully designed and tastefully outfitted with Deborah's great sense of style. You could easily live here long term and feel like you're "home". The property is run by Deborah who genuinely cares and whose professionalism truly shows. Nestled next to a Tico community who make you feel welcome and special. A couple of minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches ever - and made more beautiful because of its privacy and lack of commercialism. A short walk to the beach town where you can get everything you need and have fun doing it. Embedded in some incredible natural beauty and blessed with unbelievable weather, its hard to imagine anything better. Thanks to Deborah, this is the stuff of memories and we're cherishing every moment. It's impossible not to.

EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

  • 5 of 5
Me and my fiance stayed at the apartment for a week and it exceeded our expectations. The place is much larger than it appears in the photos and the furniture and amenities are first class. The apartment has two nice sized balconies (although we mostly used the one in the front and the other for drying towels and bathing suits) and two very nice bathrooms both with great showers, which is especially useful when getting ready in the morning for adventures. Having laundry was a great bonus, we did two loads in the week due to the frequent swimming. The location of the apartment is excellent; it is about a 3-5 minute walk to the beach and along the beach is a 5-10 minutes to town and restaurants. As for the chickens next door, they do make some noise in the morning but if we were tired we slept in, and if we were not, we got up. The sunlight is such that the best part of the day is from 6-6 anyways! The howler monkeys also made a presence, which was awesome! Of course, the sound of the ocean waves crashing counteracted these as a wonderful white noise. The apartment was super clean, comfortable, and classy. We will be staying here again.

BEST PLACE WE STAYED IN ALL OF COSTA RICA!

  • 5 of 5
Staying in Deborah's apartment was the highlight of our ( me, husband, friend) recent trip to Costa Rica. The place was so beautiful, stylish and clean, and comfortable for all of us because of the extra convertable bed privately located under the loft. We paid more for so much less in every other place we stayed. The modern fully equipped kitchen was suppled with all the basics (coffee filters, spices etc.) so we didn't have to run out for every meal. The internet connection was the best I encountered and in-house laundry was a bonus!
It is a short walk to the beach, then a lovely stroll along the beach to get to town. Deborah was very helpful with tourist information, genuinely concerned about our comfort and well-being, and always warm and friendly, as was the rest of her family. In fact, after 5 nights we felt like family!
I would highly recommend this place. The accommodation was by far superior to even the next best place.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Gail, for your kind words about my place and your stay here. My aim is to provide that feeling of comfort to all my guests. I really enjoyed meeting you and James and Liliane. It is a wonderful added benefit to this rental business to meet such interesting people and make new friends. I hope that we will meet again.

EXCELLENT FACILITIES BUT NO SLEEP

  • 1 of 5
We originally booked for a lengthy stay here, on arrival we were really pleased as the apartment has excellent facilities and is finished to a very high standard. The apartment is on the main road from Samara to Carillo, there is traffic and a nearby bar but these are not too noticeable. The walk to Samara town centre is about 15 minutes each way on the beach and very pleasant (torch needed at night time).

The apartment is away from the town centre and in a Tico community, everyone is very friendly and relaxed. Next door keeps around 15 chickens including cockerels, we were made aware of this and told they occasionally would be heard. We had to be up each day for 6am so thought this would be OK, the issue here was the latest they decided to rise was 4am and during a bright moon this would be as early as 12am and continue for many hours. The chickens are kept no more than 20 yards from the property perimeter so will wake you up each time. The owner spoke to the property owner but chickens are kept by most in the local area and this is normal.

In Costa Rica nearly all homes have dogs and there are also wild dogs in the local Tico community. At night these are used for security and most sleep outside, one house opposite had a pack of 3 that would bark on nights for 4 hours at a time and this would set the chickens off (and attract other wild dos). Due to this and the fact we needed to work we had to move out early, we were very sad to leave but we had no choice, during 1 week we had 3 continuous nights of zero sleep and the very latest we slept during the whole month was 4am.

We had initially agreed a monthly rate and when the owner agreed we could leave early this rate suddenly tripled for the 3 additional days. This was not communicated and was a sad end to the stay, we had a large deposit with them, due to the unagreed rate rise and a huge electrical bill 95% was not returned. If you agree to pay the electric I would also take your own readings as this saves situations such as the one we experienced.

The owner explained in email this was a Tico ambience, I would strongly disagree and confirm the owner has not stayed at the property overnight since the neighbours have added chickens and dogs to their home. This made the comments and charges very frustrating as the focus appeared to be on $ rather than helping us enjoy the stay.

Once again great property with excellent facilities but the location and Tico ambience will ruin your stay and deposit.

Owner's Response: I am happy to address the complaints of this renter, defend my integrity as a business person and hopefully improve upon my services. The renter and I exchanged numerous emails on conditions and services offered for my home rental. The normal price for my property is $100/night or $600/wk. We negotiated a price of $1200/mo. based on a reservation for just under 3 months. This price included basic services except electrical. I explained from the outset that power is expensive here and the bill fluctuates considerably depending upon use of the air conditioner. We agreed to a $50 credit toward the bill to be included in the $1200/mo. and that the rest be deducted from the security deposit of $500, based on meter readings
taken at the time of their arrival and departure. I have never had a client object to this method in the past. Their power bill was calculated at $225 in local currency for the month. In future I will ask my clients to accompany me when I take the readings and for the visit to the power company office. My client asked for the fastest internet service possible so I upgraded that service before their arrival. Shortly after arrival, the lady became seriously ill with a stomach flu. Her husband called me to get a cab number and I dropped what I was doing to immediately take them to a local doctor. At some point a small repair became necessary which was attended to within half an hour of being informed of the problem. Before they came I explained that the building is on a main road and about 100 m. across the road there is a Tico community of families and small businesses, a source of normal community activity. I told them that the lady next door had chickens. The renter paid me in advance for their next month. Two days later he contacted me that they had had two successive nights of noisy dogs keeping them awake and decided to leave early. They stayed three extra nights over their first month. For those nights I charged them $100/night, and returned to them in full their prepayment for the month to come. From their $500 deposit I deducted 3 nights extra plus $175 for electricity. I have spoken to the neighbor lady who has agreed to sacrifice roosters. Canvassing locals, I could find no one who heard the dog scandal and I have never had a previous renter complain of this. I will continue to offer the best service possible to my clients and hope that my other reviews produce a favourable balance in the eyes of potential renters.
