Now available for rent for the first time in over 100 years! These well-appointed cabins are situated at the heart of Phipps La Garita Ranch overlooking the Rio Grande valley, our lakes and the lush meadows of Bellows Creek. Our property is bordered on three sides by the Rio Grande National Forest and is refuge to herds of elk, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, Canadian geese, eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, black-faced ibis and numerous other species of wildlife. The trout fishing here is superb and very private on 2-1/2 miles of river, 3-1/2 miles of improved stream and four manmade lakes. By prior arrangement, our guests can also ride horses on 7 well-established trails around the ranch. The entire ranch was formerly leased to the prestigious La Garita Club. Guests have included General John “Black Jack” Pershing, President Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Court Justice Byron White, and Walt Disney.
Each of the two cabins—named the “Ritz” and the “Biltmore” respectively--contains 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. Each has a living room with a stone, wood-burning fireplace, picture windows overlooking the meadows, lakes and surrounding forests; an eating area and an efficient kitchen with settings for 6 people. Each of the living rooms and back bedrooms opens onto an outdoor deck with a gas barbecue grill, outdoor furniture and a supply of wood for your fires in the evening.
If prospective guests need more space, we also have three other well-appointed guest apartments called the Waldorf, Pierre and the Plaza each with two bedrooms (king-size beds and two twin beds), 2 bathrooms, living room, dining areas, complete kitchens, and an outdoor deck with barbeque and occasional furniture.
In addition to fishing and riding, there is a lot to do at Phipps La Garita Ranch. We have 6 mountain bikes, a swimming pool and 8-person spa, a horseshoe pit, a row boat and canoe for use on the first lake, marked hiking trails around the property, and a recreation hall with two fireplaces, furniture and a ping-pong .
The exciting art and mining community of Creede is 15 minutes away with the nationally known Creede Repertory Theater, museums, shopping, art galleries, restaurants, and jeeping and river- rafting opportunities. Golfers will find the award-winning Rio Grande Club in South Fork (20 minutes away) an excellent place to play.
