Come for sustenance, rejuvenation, sanctuary…
Timelessness, peace, and solitude distinguish this charming 1-bedroom cottage, built of turn-of-the-century timbers from the old Island Church and tucked in a clearing in a tranquil cedar grove on Orcas Island's beautiful north shore. From under plump quilts you may see deer grazing in the morning stillness outside your window as you lazily awaken to the island's forest melodies.
Sweet Cedar combines the advantages of privacy, quiet, and self-sufficiency with easy walking or driving proximity to spectacular beach sunsets and the unhurried seaside rhythms of quaint Eastsound Village. You’ll find the best of both worlds here—a rural setting, yet just minutes to charming shops and services.
This 2-acre property was first cleared in 1940 by old Reverend LaCompe, pastor of the original community church on Orcas. Sweet Cedar began its life as a barn, which accounts for its odd dimensions and roofline. It was remodeled in 1979 as a bedroom only. Later the present bedroom, kitchen and deck were added. We’re new to VRBO, but between 1993 and 2006 the cottage welcomed vacationers from all over the world. After a five-year hiatus it is just opened again as a peaceful retreat for visitors to our beautiful islands.
Sweet Cedar has living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and private deck. It sits near to but facing away from the owner’s home, with access via a separate driveway and entrance. The cottage is immaculate, with plenty of extras to add to your stay. The compact full kitchen is furnished with dinnerware, cookware, and linens. The range is propane, and the oven is a high-efficiency countertop electric. Appliances include a full size refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, blender, and electric water kettle. A queen bed in the bedroom and sofa bed in the living room allow sleeping for 2 adults and up to 2 children.
We are lucky to have the only private well on the north shore, so your water comes right out of the ground below you—filtered, and no chemicals of any kind. It tests at very high quality, and if you care to filter it there’s a Brita water pitcher in the kitchen.
Importantly, Sweet Cedar rates are kept low year-round. With the growth of the island, our tourist industry has vastly expanded to include far more luxury accommodations than affordable ones. Sweet Cedar is the exception: beautiful, comfortable, private, with every essential amenity, still priced for the average traveler and children always welcome. We have return visitors every year, and the cottage fills up quickly by spring. Click the Calendar link at right to check availability.
