We’ve made the guest cottage a special home-away-from-home, ready for you to enjoy from the moment you walk in the door. Completely renovated, tastefully decorated, and fully furnished, the guest cottage is on the grounds of the historic Maplewood Cottage #14. The well-equipped kitchen includes everything you need to prepare your favorite meal. Grill up a summer favorite on the deck. There’s plenty of space to watch a movie or curl up with a book by the stove. And there’s plenty to do no matter which season you choose to visit – trails with waterfalls, streams, and swimming holes, downhill and cross-country skiing, all just a few minutes away. Glorious vistas abound. Come stay a while.
Any time of year, Bethlehem is a beautiful spot to enjoy your vacation or just get away for a long weekend.
In 2004, we bought a small cafe in Lincoln NH. We sold our home in southern NH and rented a condo while we searched for a new home. We wanted to feel part of a community, a real neighborhood full of families as well as empty-nesters, with a thriving village center, and close to great shops and health care as well as hiking and skiing. After looking at properties in all the surrounding towns, we decided on Bethlehem.
Our home was built as one of 16 'cottages' as part of the Maplewood Hotel - one of the original grand hotels of the White Mountains, and one of 30 hotels that were part of Bethlehem in the late 1800's. There were 3 train stations in Bethlehem that would bring 'summer people' from Boston and NY. Unfortunately all that remains are 4 of the original cottages, the casino (now the Maplewood Country Club) and golf course.
There's a real sense of community, from the indie theatre to local restaurants, antique and artisan shops, a brand new library and a highly-rated elementary school. Who wouldn't want to live here?!
When we purchased the property, the rental cottage was a run-down bare-bones mother-in-law apartment; we gutted it and turned it into the kind of place we like to stay in when traveling - well appointed yet comfy, big enough for 2 but small enough for 1, with no adjoining rooms or other units for complete privacy.
My boyfriend and I stayed in Mary's cottage while up in the area for a ski weekend and we could not have had a better experience! Reviewer #1 hit the nail on the head - it was the perfect place to come back to after skiing and relax by the fire. We also brought food up and enjoyed dinners in, but Mary made dinner recommendations, just in case (Rosa Flamingo's - we actually went there with friends last weekend and had a great time. Thanks, Mary!). I can speak as highly for Mary as I can about her property. She was accessible, prompt and well organized - such a pleasure to communicate with. I've been eyeing the calendar ever since and can't wait to stay at the cottage again!
My husband and I just stayed at this little cottage and it was the amazing getaway! We drove up from the city, for a weekend of skiing and it was the perfect distance from all the ski resorts (Attitash, Bretton Woods, Cannon, Loon). We brought some food to cook in the evenings and nestled in front of the fire after long days of skiing! It was truly a piece of heaven and we would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to get away and relax.
Mary, the owner, was also completely accommodating and remained in clear contact. She left detailed instructions and was very informative. Mary made the process seamless and pleasant. For a great weekend away, this cottage is highly recommended.
A popular resort town since 1867, Bethlehem is a treasure any time of year! Over 30 grand hotels once lined Bethlehem's streets, the Maplewood being the grandest of them all. Nestled between Franconia and Crawford Notches in the heart of the White Mountains, nature abounds. There are hiking trails and scenic vistas just about anywhere you look.
Bethlehem is home to two Donald Ross-designed golf courses, the Colonial Theatre, a thriving main street with galleries, antique shops and cafes, a farmer's market (seasonal) and summer weekly outdoor concerts at the town gazebo.
And whether you're looking for hiking, skiing, zip lines, rope courses, swimming, mountain biking or water parks, we're just a 15 minute drive to Bretton Woods or Cannon; another 10 and you can be at Loon or Attitash! Now is a perfect time to plan your getaway.
