About Electrum Amor

i am a designer and writer living between san francisco , hawaii and Taos . I love animals and nature. I'm also a huge fan of mountain biking , snowboarding and yoga . We put lots of love and thought into the remodel of our home in Taos and feel deeply honored to get to share it with you . looking forward to being in touch and getting to hear your story as well , warmly , justin

Electrum Amor purchased this house in 2001
Why Electrum Amor chose Kehena

I was living between San Francisco and Maui the first time I visited lower puna. It was and still is the most beautiful ,magic spot I've found on the planet .I put an offer on the then very basic house because of it's magnificent gardens . When I returned to San Francisco I put both my Maui and Bay area house on the market and prepared to move .During my first few years on the island I was spending a lot of time in bali so I commissioned carving artists to make custom doors to be used throughout the house as well as picking up lots of interesting furnishings. I also brought in stained glass and hand made glass tile from around the world to allow the light and feeling of the house to change throughout the day . My friend Bhakti , a designer , chef and amazing bodyworker collaborated with me on the design and is currently the caretaker in residence

What makes this house unique

It's a jungle feast with serenading accompaniment from the coqui frogs!

Forget The "Real World" For Awhile

Forget The "Real World" For Awhile

We arrived at this dream in paradise on our 25th anniversary and our jaws dropped! I wasn't certain from the pictures online if we would find this as exotic as it was listed. The pictures do it NO justice!! We entered and were entranced before we could get our luggage in the door. First of all, it was HUGE, and after 3 nights there, we were still finding things we hadn't noticed at first. The colors that looked a bit overdone in the photos made perfect sense in person, and were mesmerizing. There were details that were everywhere we looked. Our foolish addiction to TV was replaced quickly, as there is none, and my husband spent great amounts of time sitting on the edge of the spa tub, watching the playful geckos chase around the bathroom lights! The chirping of the frogs in the gorgeous gardens surrounding the apt. was our lullaby at night.
My complaints are few and, would not be the fault of this beautiful place. First was that I was chewed up by insects, when outside, in seconds. I had to be very cautious of that, but my husband wasn't affected much. Second was that the kitchen was a bit TOO large for the things it contained. I spent more time looking for things to cook with, in the many cupboards available, than I probably spent cooking! This was not a place I wanted to vacation in.....I could have nicely LIVED there! We chose it's location based on it's proximity to the boat launch that took us out to see the lava flow into the sea. That, in itself was incredible, and if the lava is cooperating, do NOT miss doing this, if you are healthy enough to tackle the difficult boatride. Just awesome.
We wish we had booked it for longer, if we had only known how much we would love the place itself. It's solitude is so soothing. Be advised that there are NOT tons of restaurants aroundif you hate cooking. The nearest is probably 20-30 min. away. Kaleo's in Pahao is amazing however, and there is great music each night. It is obviously an area where life is much quieter and laid back. If you crave peace, or forgot what peace even FEELS like.....check out this place. We are certainly glad that it ended up being our choice! We can't imagine anything much better than this. It is gracious living at it's best.

Hawaiian Experiance of a Lifetime

5 of 5
Submitted: September 3, 2012 Stayed: May 2012
When we arrived all we could hear was the Koki frogs! It was so cool to step out of the car and just be immersed in the sounds of Hawai'i. The house itself is beautiful and the pictures don't do it justice. The Balinese style throughout completes the island experience and immediately you realize you're in paradise.

During the day, not surprisingly, you can find day geckos everywhere! They're really cute but really quick! You can see them along the banana leaves in the organic fruit orchard that surrounds the property. There are so many different kinds of fruit and the care takers that live downstairs, Bhakti and Bodhi (who totally made our trip with all of their recommendations and knowledge of the island. It was really nice to get to know them and hopefully see them again soon!) brought up some papaya and even even went on a coffee run for us! It was actually hard t believe that they were there, we never heard anyone but ourselves but they were never too far if you needed something. Thanks again for everything!

We flew into Kona and rented a car to get there. Its a long but beautiful drive. You can fly into Hilo, which is much closer, but we ended our trip on the Kona side so we decided it would be best to fly in and our of Kona rather than Hilo. The home is located a short 5-10 minute walk to a black sand beach (clothing optional but there really weren't too many people choosing this route).

The property for us was in the perfect location. As most of the attractions around the island are scattered around, rather than choose a property closer to a few and a long drive from others, we found we could get to a nice group of places each day and do the island section by section. It actually worked out better than planned and we fit more in than we thought we would have.

ONE THING YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO SEE is the lava at night. I'm not talking about the crater at the top of the park, I mean walking across the barren lava field to see it glow at night. It really is amazing and probably one of the greatest experiences in my life. There's just nothing like it and you won't believe me until you get there. It's a long (depending on the lava flow) trek but if you bring about 3-4 bottles of water each and snacks fro along the way you'll be fine. Read into it before going and if you can make some friends along the way like we did! Bhakti and Bodhi know some guides as well if you'd like to go that route.

All in all, BEST VACATION and the BEST VRBO EVER!

This home was absolutely paradise in Puna Palisades. We were greeted with a great massage who was only in town once a month. It was the best massage I have ever had. We cracked every bones and knots in my body that was clogged. The house was well designed and pleasant. The only thing were the ants. But I suppose that is expected from staying in the jungle.

What a truly inspiring place!! Justins home was warm and inviting, the grounds are beautiful. Clean and safe, as we were two women traveling alone. The ladies downstairs were always kind and willing to help out with information on the island or various other questions we had. We each had our readings done by Bodi, and massages, wonderful on both!! We truly had an amazing time both in and around our home for the month! Thank you Justin, Bodi, Bhakti, and Initka . . Happy to have met you and you will always travel in our hearts!! A car is much needed when visiting the area, there is a bus that runs, but it only comes by 3 times a day, so plan your days in advance.

Kipuka Vacation

This is a beautiful place, in a beautiful, lush spot, off the beaten path on east side of the Big Island. Pure magic. It is as beautiful as the pictures. The climate is so balmy and warm, with soft breezes and occasional showers, and warm luscious nights ..it was heaven. In addition to the lush gardens, there are tons of birds and geckos during the day, and frogs singing their hearts out a night, and a night sky filled absolutely filled with stars. It was just little ol me renting this whole place, which would comfortably sleep 4 or more, but I was enchanted by the pictures, the price was so reasonable, and I was not disappointed! The lovely women who live in the unit below and caretake the place were so welcoming and helpful, a total pleasure all by themselves, and they introduced me to a few of the local treasures a very local farmers market, a lovely cafe, a black sand beach just a 10 minute walk away that I might not have discovered otherwise. They also offer some wonderful services like massage, readings, and healthy foods if you are so inclined, but they also completely respect your privacy. There is plenty to do and see, but I found myself just slowing way down and soaking up the magic of the place. And I was lucky enough to encounter a pod of 40 dolphins at Kehena Beach the last day I was there, and swim with them for a long time. It was an amazing something I will never forget, and I found it very hard to leave! Also a word to those who like to swim like I do the local beach Kehena Beach, while gorgeous, can have some heavy surf, so another option when the surf is rough is the retreat center just a few miles away which offers a beautiful pool, yoga classes, and a day pass including lunch for just 30 dollars.
