As owners we understand that your vacation time is a special, and believe the interior should be just as memorable as the mountains outside. Enjoy an inviting interior DESIGN INSPIRED by nature and Durango's historic roots; created with carefully chosen furnishings, hardwood floors, wool rugs, designer bedding, lots of textures, rich colors, antique accents and art.

SLEEPING OPTIONS: All bedrooms are upstairs. REKINDLE ROMANCE in a MASTER bedroom as beautiful as a Honeymoon Suite. Pillow Talk with Missionary Ridge Views from a King Canopy Bed with flowing curtains, and RL bedding. Relax with hardwood floors, 18' ceilings, a sitting area with flat-screen satellite TV, a love-seat that converts to a twin sleeper, and a walk-in closet. Aspen Forest & Hermosa Cliff views complement ROMANTIC WHIMSY in the 2nd BEDROOM. The queen bed features pillow-top views & 4' memory foam. Hardwood floors, a flat-screen TV w/ Direct TV and leather arm chair by the window create a relaxing retreat. A walk in closet provides ample storage. Children adore the forested purple LOFT with BUNK BED. The loft features a window, and is accessed by a lovely white wood wood spiral stair from the 2nd guest room.

BATHROOMS: All 3 bathrooms have updated fixtures and tile. Upstairs, the king and queen bedrooms both have attached bathrooms. Downstairs is a powder room with toilet and sink. The on-suite master bath features a dual granite vanity, brushed fixtures & massage shower. The guest room bath is shared with the loft, and has a massage shower and plentiful storage.

The KITCHEN and DINING are 2 of our favorite remodel projects; VINTAGE, WHIMSICAL, and WELCOMING. Antiqued cream cabinetry with seed glass and glass knobs start the day with a sparkle. Stainless appliances, gorgeous light travertine counters, and well stocked kitchen tools make eating in a breeze for a romantic dinner or the extended family. Dining in is special for children or romance in a custom cushy banquette, with lovely dinner ware and handmade glasses and flatware.

In non-snow months, the family can stretch out to our DECK with Missionary Ridge views, versatile seating for 8 & BBQ. The balcony has steps to a grassy area, and is 2 minute walk to a small playground, pick-nick area and the Award Winning Sow's Ear Restaurant (try the Elk and huge burgers!)

About Sunshine Qualls

A pleasant encounter in a library grew into a garden wedding 6 months later. Meeting in the art & architecture section foreshadowed a future together in building and design. We were both fortunate to be immersed in satisfying careers, but jammed freeway commutes were daily drudgery. Solution to daily traffic jams? Sell your home, buy a house in a foreign country without seeing it; and move to a tiny pueblo in Costa Rica. Did we mention being 40 minutes off pavement, and taking over 2 years to get a telephone and internet? ha ha.

For nearly a decade we have stretched our boundaries. An essential part of building a business here was getting to know the people and unique culture of Costa Rica. Some huge challenges were attaining residency, and dealing with distances to supplies on unpaved roads. For US citizens, getting legal residency is far more difficult than one would expect. And, it is hard not to miss conveniences and comforts of the US. Cody stays busy building and designing custom vacation homes and pools. Sunshine corresponds with each of our rental guests and home schools our energetic little girl. In 2015, we are very excited that a sibling is on the way.

It is true that the beaches, foliage and wild-life of Costa Rica are uniquely beautiful; and the people good-hearted. Folks often say it sounds exciting to live in Costa Rica. Guanacaste is a perfect climate for vacationing on the beach, taking a sunset horseback ride or zipping through tree canopy with Howler Monkeys. However, equator sun is scorching, rather than fun, if here working. We are grateful for our business, yet many of our dreams linger at about 9,000ft; in the snow, at the lakes, and on the hiking trails of Durango's refreshing mountain forests. We think you'll share our emotions in the 5 minutes after passing North Tamarron, when you begin your ascent into the breathtaking San Juan mountains to Purgatory Mountain (the most ironic name for a heavenly place!).

Why Sunshine Qualls chose Durango

Our dream future involves an area with year-round outdoor opportunities to enjoy as a family, refreshing weather, and horses. Great Grandma and Grandpa used to visit Durango many years before we were born. Our first trip, we loved it as much as they did. It is easy to see Durango as the ideal place to raise a family and enjoy being outdoors as many days a year as possible. There are arts, culture, great dining, awesome people, and a 4 year college. We've enjoyed Durango in all seasons, and have yet to find a time of year that the mountain does not take our breath away! The Historic downtown area has a wonderful offering of dining options, visual arts, unique shopping and exciting events. The Fort Lewis college offers a variety of learning, music and theater opportunities. The mountain is almost central between Historic Durango and Silverton (we love to browse Silverton and Ouray too). It is an easy town to make friends in; we have struck up meaningful warm, conversations with people on the top deck of the Ouray Brewery, at local churches, in the Brown's Shoe-store, at the Rochester Hotel, in Garden Schwartz Outdoor store, and on the slopes. Between the wealth of outdoor activities for all ages (we have not even had a chance to try them all yet!), amazing weather, educational opportunities, arts, great food, lots of choices for worship, antiques, unique boutiques, historic ambiance, wildlife, lakes and incredible mountain views, Durango is simply Amazing.

What makes this townhome unique

Durango's family friendly ski resort at Purgatory Mountain and historic downtown have won recognition from Conde Nast, US News and Outdoor Magazine, among numerous national publications. We realize that guests have many choices of lodging for a visit to Durango (and believe you should come to Durango & Purgatory no matter where you stay!). We have chosen two properties at the resort area that we love immensely, and invested our hearts and elbow grease into making them very special. We love being up on the mountain because it is substantially cooler than the valley in summer, and the views are magnificent. The Durango Mountain Resort area central to down-town Durango and Silverton with easy access to mountain fun for people that love the outdoors. Our East Rim condos are slope side, our Silverpick town-home is one mile south. One slope side location boasts DMMA ammenities, one location is Ski In Ski out, the town-home is spacious with an awesome king canopy suite, vaulted ceilings and immediate access to the Aspen Forest. All three are pet friendly with guest acceptance of pet rules. Our condos have been significantly upgraded, have high quality decors, 2 levels of views and a deck or balcony. Whether you are beginning marriage with a honeymoon, a family traveling with young children, a couple needing a refresher, or traveling with the in-laws, one of our thoughtfully planned and lovingly decorated homes may be the perfect place to create lasting vacation memories.

What a lovely home!

We had the pleasure of staying here this past weekend and I can't say enough good things. This is our fourth or fifth VRBO, and by far the most cheerful and charming with the nicest beds and linens, complete attention to detail and comfort. We were in town to ride the scenic railroad over the kids' spring break (new to Colorado, we haven't taken up skiing yet) and loved that we were near Durango but in a quiet scenic little spot still close to the action. Sunshine is beyond professional in her handling of the rental process and extremely helpful and quick to respond to any questions. We had a lovely dinner at the Sow's Ear restaurant on the property just a short walk across the back lawn of the unit, overlooking the majestic views; checked out the ski resort just a few minutes up the road; and picked up some tasty snacks from the nearby PJ's Gourmet Market when we didn't want to drive all the way into town. In summary: great location, beautiful home, perfect getaway.

Beautiful, comfortable vacation home near Durango Mountain Resort

This beautiful home was even nicer then expected. The pictures show a beautiful home but being there provided a comfortable place to stay as well. Everything was extremely clean (important in my book), furnishings were not only beautiful but high quality, sheets were soft, bedding was nice, even the window coverings were excellent- providing a room darkening quality to sleep in and take naps with kiddos as needed. The rooms were large and had plenty of space, the washer and dryer was nice to have, the entry way had plenty of space for all our our snow gear, jackets, shoes, etc.,

The kitchen was extremely well stocked for my gourmet cooking husband, we eat at home most often so this was nice. The dining room had ample room for my children and my son loved the bench seating. We played games there and did crafts.

The couches were warm and comfortable and the stocked fire wood made it nice and cozy for our daily fire. No detail was left untouched. This is truly a well taken care of and beautiful home.

Sunshine is extremely helpful, even in matters that do not pertain to her renting the townhome. The information she provides is extremely helpful when it comes to checking in and out and info about the townhome.

When I needed something she had someone there the next day to help accommodate our needs.

We have stayed at VRBO's for the past 10 years all over the US and several times a year in Durango. Sometimes we find a great place and sometimes it falls short. This home surpassed my expectations. I would stay again if traveling to Durango and needing a place to stay.

Best Rental Ever

This is the most beautifully decorated and furnished place near Durango Mountain Resort. The comfort and luxury of the furnishings were unlike any we have ever experienced. Sparkling clean, high end linens, decorator touches throughout. It was a perfect place for our family to join us while we explored the hiking, fishing, shopping, fine dining and alpine slide in and around Durango.

The owners were very thoughtful and provided specialized soaps, chapstick and lotions for our stay in the wonderfully dry mountain air. You will enjoy your time in this rental and appreciate the helpfulness and integrity of the owners.

Amazing location offers hiking right out the back door among the Aspen forest on the stunning Hermosa Cliffs. The ski slopes are a short 1 mile, 2 minutes drive from our door. You can catch the Durango Silverton Train at Rockwood Station, just 12 minutes drive south (this eliminates the long, hot and flat part of the train ride). The charming Historic Durango Downtown is just 30 minutes drive South, on a well maintained easy to navigate highway. East is just as easy to explore North, heading 35-50 minutes to the old mining town of Silverton and Swiss influenced Ouray. In the towns enjoy history, shopping and dining, with incredible photographic opportunities along the way. Water fun? Too many lakes nearby to list here, Spud lake is a family favorite, and Haviland Lake is just a few minutes south. Fishing, hiking and mountain biking opportunities are unlimited within 2 minutes to an hour's drive. Mesa Verde ruins are an easy day trip, as is Electra Lake. If you are into the theatre, arts, live music and festivals; Durango offers something unique year-round. Be sure to investigate July's Music in the Mountains, August's Fair, October's Art Festival and the Durango Cowboy Poetry Celebrations. Durango Train special events abound as well, the Polar Bear train is an annual favorite.
