This is our second home and our vacation paradise, not just a rental income property. We have enjoyed hiking and motorcycling in the area for over 15 years and wanted a more permanant place to stay that felt more like home. We are so very thankful to be able to share our retreat with a joyful heart.
Please enjoy Stoneybrook Cottage as much as we do!
Woody Mason purchased this cottage in 2004
After looking at other properties is East Tennessee and western North Carolina, we discovered what is locally known as the Rock House. It was built by a local lumber / saw-mill baron in the 1950's for his personal retreat. It was then and is now truly unique. There is a calming influence permeating the cottage, allowing us to relax and re-charge from our busy schedules. We enjoy hiking for recreation and there are many trails to explore close by. We are also avid motorcyclists and this area provides so many great riding experiences and sightseeing opportunities that we haven't made a dent in them so far. Many vacation homes are newly constructed log cabins, sometimes built in almost cookie-cutter, sub-division fashion. Stoneybrook Cottage stands alone and it has the comforting feeling of returning home each time we arrive.
Stoneybrook Cottage is also a bird watchers paradise. We have feeders for our many bird visitors and bird watchers alike. Humming birds abound along with more varieties than I can count.
Our stay in the cottage was wonderful. We could open up the windows in the bedroom, the bathroom and the kitchen and didn't have to turn on the air-conditioner which enabled us to go to sleep and wake up with the the birds and frogs Everything was clean. We would like to compliment you for the way the cottage has been taken care of. Everything we needed was there-you didn't forget anything! We hope we can return next year.

My husband and I stayed for a week at this charming stone cottage. It was pristinely clean. Smelled great, not a single bug to be found. This is not a modern upscale rental, it is exactly as it claims to be. A quaint country cottage. The decor was perfect for the locale, as these Appalachian foothills are deeply steeped with history. The old-time pictures and nick-nacks truly set off the appeal. You really felt like you've gone back in time and you could feel the "carpe diem" eminate from the eyes in the actual turn-of-the-century photographs.
The landscape was nicely done with a lovely ENGLISH ivy climbing about the stone walls. Behind the cottage is hundreds of acres of forested hills, no neighbors in site. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly.
The hosts were spot-on in their balance of giving information, rules and expectations while keeping you feeling very welcome, confusion-free, in need of nothing and completely private. They really take care of you!
The cost vs value on this property is a no-brainer. Location is prime for privacy, romance and "getting away from it all".
I highly recommend this place for a mountain get-away. As far as the previous somewhat negative review, just remember, there's one in every crowd!
We stayed at Stoneybrook cottage for one month w/our two young boys.
Stoneybrook is a small stone cottage set into a hill out in Madisonville, TN. It is quaint and older and the floors slant in various directions. The house is clean and well stocked. The furniture is older (garage sale/thrift store type furniture), but it works. The house has one bedroom in the front of the house and another in the back. The bathroom contains the laundry and the kitchen is small with no dishwasher. The house is on a hill with very little yard, but has a nice front porch and deck. The driveway is tight and hard to maneuver in. There is a very small grill in the backyard and a little back deck with table. The house is located about 15 minutes down a curvy country road from Madisonville, which is a small town with a little post office, Walmart and very decent park w/playground and lake. The house is located about 45 minutes from Maryville and an hour from Knoxville.
1. The beds are very comfortable.
2. The cottage is well stocked with things a person would need, but may forget to bring.
3. The cottages is secluded, except for cars driving along the road out front & quiet.
4. The cottage has homey touches, which makes it feel less like a rental property.
5. The cottage is affordable.
1. The internet service is very spotty and frustrating to use b/c it constantly kicks off and on. (At&t)
2. There is no cell phone service at the cottage or within 10 minutes of the house. The cottage phone only calls locally.
3. The house has a lot of nick nacks (some block views from the front porch). There are so many nick nacks its hard to find a place to put your own stuff. The owners are also very particular about every little nick nack being exactly in its place.
4. The furniture, decor and condition of the house is older and not suitable for children.
5. There are ticks around the house and poison ivy growing in various places, including poison Ivy we had to remove growing up the front porch wall.
6. For longer stays the owner makes you call the local trash company and order your own trash service (He provided no trash removal for our stay). Something we were not informed of before we paid for the rental.
We made short notice reservations and we were not disappointed. We wanted a place "off the grid" and "unplugged". This sweet cottage was just that! It was clean and charming. The owner was fabulous to work with! Thanks for sharing your hideaway with us!
We booked this cottage on short notice wanting something more then a hotel room. It was perfect! Very clean and comfortable! And the owner was so helpful with our short notice on our reservation! Would love to stay there again!
We had a wonderful time at the cottage. Great rates! Very cute! I enjoyed having my mornin coffee on the porch watching the mama bird feed her babies. The Mountain view is amazing! My daughter and her friend enjoyed playing in the creek down the road and building their first fire in the fire ring, telling me spooky stories! The surrounding area is beautiful, we enjoyed hiking, bald river falls. Whitewater rafting. And much more! Owner is great to work with and neighbor across the street helpful!
Can’t say enough great things about our weekend getaway to the Cottage!! The Cottage was so cute and homey, and VERY clean and well maintained! We especially enjoyed sitting on the front porch and deck each evening with the outdoor fireplace going. This is a great place to relax! If you go, take a drive on the Cherohala Skyway and check out Pizzeria Venti for the best pizza! Also, the owners of the Cottage are so friendly…Thanks Woody!! We will be back!
