About Ellen Wilson

I grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming with a passion for fly fishing. I own and manage Snake River Angler, the largest fly fishing outfitter in Jackson Hole and in Grand Teton National Park. I operate two retail fishing stores and employ 20 full time Wyoming fishing guides.

My love of fishing and the ocean led me and my family to Islamorada for the best in salt-water fishing. My wife loves to fish and the 5 children often go out in the boat with us.

Ellen Wilson purchased this house in 2009

Why Ellen Wilson chose Islamorada

I walked into the back yard of 118 Madeira, stood on the dock and saw a manatee swimming in the canal. I could also see schools of big mangroove snapper hanging out by the pilings. I have fished all over the world from Belize to Mongolia. I could not pass up the chance to buy Happy Tarpon after 22 years of visiting and fishing here. Islamorada is unmatched for the variety and access to backcountry and offshore fishing anywhere in the world. It is also a peaceful, private location for the family. Islamorada is good for the fisherman and the family with all the activities available in the area.

What makes this house unique

The variety of water activities is boundless with snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding, boating, wind surfing, kite boarding, fly fishing, reef fishing, and offshore ocean fishing. The beauty of the Everglade National Park is right out the back door. White herons sit on the edge of the pool and look in our living room window (!!) and the manatees come and visit regularly all winter. Ever since I saw my first 100 plus pound tarpon jumping out of the water with my fly in its mouth I have been in love with Islamorada and the Florida Keys.

After reading the many positive reviews about the Happy Tarpon house, I have to say my expectations were high. Let me tell you, this house did not disappoint! Many people have stated that the pictures do not do the house justice, and I have to agree. The kitchen was top of the line and had everything we needed (plates, utensils, pots, pans, blender, toaster, etc.), including a lot of the items you would normally need to buy, like foil, Ziploc bags, paper plates. The bathrooms looked brand new, and thanks to their being 3.5 bathrooms in the house, no one ever had to wait. The view from the master bedroom is stunning – what a way to wake up each morning! The deck is so cool, with coral fish swimming all over in the clear water below. Every night we would go out on the deck to watch the HUGE Spiny Lobsters come out to eat for the night. We rented tandem kayaks from PADDLE! the Florida Keys, and had them delivered to the house free of charge. One trip out on the kayaks, right by the deck, we encountered a momma and baby manatee grazing in about 3 to 4 feet of crystal clear water. My daughter was the most excited little girl ever to see them so close (they actually swam right under our kayak). Fishing is great too – I actually caught a nice size barracuda from the deck, which was a lot of fun and quite a workout. We swam in the pool almost 3 times every day we were there, which was so wonderfully refreshing after kayaking or going to one of the many gorgeous beaches nearby. Did I mention the water is crystal clear, which made snorkeling from the deck really enjoyable with so much to see! We rarely needed to use the A/C simply because the breeze from the bay coming in from the doors and windows was perfect! My kids actually set an alarm every morning to get up early, open the sets of french doors, and just be in awe over what they saw! This house is situated in a very private setting – surrounded by palm and mangrove trees. Ellen was very helpful and attentive to every need we had. This is our new permanent first choice for vacation!

This home was beyond our expectations! House is so much nicer than the pics. We had lots of wildlife visit, the sunsets are absolutley stunning! Location is so convenient. I just can't say enough positive things about it! We spent hours in the pool watching boats and even saw a seaplane land and take off! At the dock you can see lobsters, crabs, barracuda, parrot fish, manatee and more! The owner is very professional and quick to respond. Very relaxing, already making plans for next year!

Incredible views

  • 5 of 5

This place exceeded our expectations by far. Pictures don't do it justice at all. This was the most amazing home ever. We have stayed in the keys before but this place is now our absolute favorite. Fishing, swimming, water views, sunsets all incredible. I even rented a paddleboard and kayak from a place right down the road and had it delivered. We loved everything about this home !!!!! Very secluded, clean and beautiful. hearing the lore lei music by the pool was a plus. Paddle boarding to the lore lei for a drink was fun. We saw iguanas, manatees, tarpon and beautiful fish. This place will def become a tradition for us yearly. The only thing I missed was not being able to have my dog...because he loves to paddle board with me but can understand why people don't allow pets when they have gorgeous homes. I give this house a perfect score and cannot thank the owners enough for having everything you could possibly need in a vacation home.
