12/31/12 GOODWIN FISHING: By the time I got into the water, it was already 2 pm. The water did not look too promising as the prior storms had brought silt into the lake & clarity was down to 5 feet. But it was a beautiful sunny, 55 degree day, so I paddled east toward Tulloch Dam. There was hardly any current. The CDEC reported only about 300 CFS being released from Tulloch Lake. The water was between 51 & 53 degrees, getting colder as I progressed upstream. The dang weeds were everywhere in 8 feet of water or less. Restricted to deeper water, I had no hits until about 2:30 pm when, about 500 feet short of the Tulloch Dam orange floats, I landed a nice 19 in. rainbow in about 14 feet of water. I was fishing 3 flies about 3 feet apart attached to 9 feet of PineLine 8 wt. fluorocarbon leader & then a 50-foot Rio T-14 sinking line using a 6 wt. rod. The fly closest to the leader was a #10 punk perch tied by Tom Knoth & donated to me by Mitch Matsumoto; the second fly was a #10 black seal bugger wrapped with red copper wire; & the third fly was a #10 black seal bugger wrapped with green copper wire. The first trout hit the punk perch.

I then entered the area where the water enters Goodwin from Tulloch & tossed the flies 90 degrees across the moving water & stripped them in rapidly. Nothing. Then, at about 2:45 pm, I moved my float tube into the moving water & tossed downstream as I paddled & twitched the line; a hard hit & the black/green fly was broken off by an unseen Whopper! That was encouraging! Paddling up toward the floats, I reversed course & paddled downstream, bang! I landed a 19 in. hen. Over the next 1.5 hours, I landed one fish after another with the largest ones exhibiting spawning colors, & most trout hitting the black/red seal bugger. By 4:30 pm I was back at my dock, having hooked 14 fish & landed 11: 2-17 in., 2-19 in., 2-20 in., 3-21 in. & 1-22 in. - all rainbows; & 1-14 in. Kokanee. This surpassed my prior best day on Goodwin in January of 2011 when my friend & I landed 11 trout between 20 in. & 25 in. in the same area in 4 hrs. Roy Gunter

5/06/12 DRIFTING THE TUOLUMNE RIVER BELOW LA GRANGE: The weather was perfect--70-80 degrees, blue skies, light wind & cool water (54 degrees). The water level seemed a little high, about 700 CFS, but the River Valley was beautiful.

Fishing was easy. (Who would have thought, during a full moon too.) I think I caught over 30 rainbows/steelhead. My fishing partner also hooked a Striper about 7 lbs. The water was so clear I saw him hit the fly. He hit a sz 8 white Crystal Bugger. I should have taken pictures of the drift, but I was too busy catching fish. The river is full of fish right now. The upper river was all rainbows/steelhead some to 22 in. (at least on this trip). The half-way point had added the Stripers, Squawfish & Carp (big schools of them), but I could not catch any. The second half still held plenty of trout if you were getting deep enough. The fishing slowed down for the others, but picked up for me. I was using straight T-11 off my 6wt & was getting to the bottom of the fast runs which obviously paid off.

The white Crystal Bugger size 10 was a killer on the upper stretch, but did not do as well in the lower half. There it was olive Bunny Leeches or burnt orange or olive Seal Buggers.

With the river full of trout & a chance at a few Stripers, I think this float is well worth taking. Also, on a Sunday, nobody else was on the river. Tight Lines. Roy Gunter

1/15/12 FLOATING THE STANISLAUS RIVER: Harry P., Peter F. & Roy Gunter floated three miles down the Stanislaus River from Knights Ferry to Horseshoe Recreation Area. After, dinner, “revelry” & a nights stay at Goodwin, we entered the water at about 8 am. That morning it was cold enough for ice on our windshields. The flows were perfect at 500 - 600 CFS as we approached Russian Rapids 1/8th mile down river. A sign offered a portage around; but Peter, a first time river float tuber, “offered” to let me go first. I had been through this rapid several times before at lower flows. This time, it was one hell of a nice ride as the waves washed over the top of my Fatcat & around my waist. Then, Peter swept through amazed to be alive & how easy it was, although he probably got a little wetter in his low rider tube.

Fishing 1 mile further down river produced only a few rainbows 14 inches or less until the river became wider & the flow moderate 4 to 5 feet over weed beds. I knew immediately the rainbows would be here if anywhere & worked the water hard, back & forth with my go-to river fly, a black #6 pistol peet - for the uninitiated traditionalists, a seal bugger with a small metal propeller just behind the hook’s eye. Soon all 3 of us were tossing pistol peets cross current & stripping them in fast. Among my catches was a beautiful 20 in. rainbow. At the end of this productive 400-foot run, a 30 in. steelhead showed me his entire back as he rested at the top of a rapids. But he wanted nothing to do with Mr. Peet, so I introduced Harry to him as he showed his back again 20 ft. between us. For 30 minutes Harry tossed every fly he could think of at the steelhead, but he had left his #000 treble hooks at home, so he too finally had to abandon his efforts.

Halfway through the drift, in 10 mins. we spotted a great egret, a bald eagle & an osprey. Later, Harry landed a 19 in. rainbow on a gold #6 burks bullet head minnow.

Before we left the water at 4 pm, it had warmed to 60 degrees under a mostly sunny blue sky. We had been the only humans on the river that day. It was by far my best float ever on the Stanislaus out of 3 prior.

I’m looking forward to improved flows for floats on the Merced River around Snelling & on the Tuolumne River around La Grange. I love these Central Valley tail waters which are all within 45 min. from Goodwin.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The San Jose Fly Fishing Club conducts many fish-outs each year for its members, and the Club is always on the lookout for new venues and areas to fish. At Owner Roy Gunter's invitation, Lee and I arrived for a day of fishing and to survey the accommodations.

First impressions are important and the beauty of the lake and surroundings impressed us. Before rigging our gear, Steve, our fishing companion and advisor for the day, gave us a walk-thru of the accommodations. Close to the lake a very neat, clean, and spacious home greeted us. It was well equipped and could easily accommodate 8 anglers. Parking for several vehicles would not be a problem.

Before actual fishing, Steve gave us a quick rundown of the lake's underwater topography and his recommendations for how to fish it. Anticipations ran high with Steve and Lee in float tubes and me in my pram. Almost immediately the value of my Fishing Buddy (sonar) proved itself showing the quickly changing depths of the water. A half stroke of the oars could quickly change the depth from 4 feet to 24 feet. Most of the fish I scoped were scattered up and down the face of the drop offs. Depth down the center varied from 30 to 50 feet, showed little structure, and was devoid of fish. Knowledge of the lake's structure meant the difference between success and failure.

Steve out fished Lee and me that day, but the anticipation of hooking one of the truly large trout kept us fishing hard. All the fish we did catch were fat, healthy, and strong. The fishery is in great shape.

The Goodwin Lake facility offers a unique opportunity for a Club fishout with its proximity to the Bay Area, excellent accommodations, and the possibility of landing a rainbow of a lifetime.

A jewel close to home

Another great weekend at Goodwin. Everthing you need for a getaway from the hustle in the big city. Quiet and private lake. You can hear the monster motors fom the jet skis and boats in the distant Lake Tulloch and look around, no one else is on "your" lake.
There is more than fishing, my favorite, in this beutiful canyon. The wildlife is everywhere, bird watching, deer, otter and more.
I hope there are many more trips to Lake Goodwin in my future

Amazing! We took our daughter and grandson!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time; all three generations. Our grandson enjoyed jumping off the dock, going out on the boat to fish with Grandpa and kayaking! Plenty of room to spread out. We had the lake to ourselves all three days. We will be back soon!

Rental home was as advertised. Very nice.

  • 5 of 5
The home is very nice, comfortable and orderly with a spectacular view of the lake and the hills. Master bedroom is large with an attached bath. The second bedroom with two twins served our need. Only complaint on the second bedroom was some loud snoring coming from one of our party members. I slept on the futon in the living room which was comfortable. Dining room had room for 6 at the table. We found the kitchen well equipped to cook our meals. Outside the deck had a table to sip morning coffee or to eat meal while enjoying the view of the lake and hills. Lakeside had a table, chairs and a dock where one of our party caught a nice big Rainbow.

Roy, the owner of the home was very gracious to come up to show us how to fish the lake. He was very helpful on how to set up for the lake and which flies to use. Roy took us on a tour around the lake in a boat showing us areas that we should fish. We could tell Roy loves to fish. The largest fish landed of the trip was over 20 inches. We look forward to return, possibly earlier in the year.

Fished Goodwin for Three days

  • 5 of 5
Fished 5/14 thru 5/17. Weather was good and fishing fairly slow. We average three to five fish a day. All fish were good size between 18 – 23 inches. Largest fish caught was 28 or 29 inches. The mornings seemed better than the evenings. We used different flies with about the same amount of success. There were no areas where the fish were stacked up. When a fish was caught, we would go back of the same spot with no further action. Our assessment was all fish were just random cruisers. Main flies used were Copper Johns and Hares ear, both on a size 12 standard hook. All in all we had a great time and as always enjoyed out surroundings.

The water flow was reduced from 4,000 to 1,000 on Friday and the fishing definitely dropped off for the final two days.

This was our second time at this lake house. It was again a guys getaway for some great fly fishing and relaxation. We love the place and find the atmosphere very relaxing with everything you need for comfort and cooking/entertaining. We will definitely come again. The fish here are very big and strong rainbow trout. Everyone had a great time catching them and releasing them after a few pictures. I'm back at work now but still dreaming about the wonderful time we had.

There are places where you can catch 20 in. trout in other parts of California, but when you add the fact that the trout are wild, well that's another story. Let's inform you on this water that I am are talking about.

It's hard to believe it is so close to Sonora & located in Tuolumne County. In 1912, two districts began construction of Goodwin Diversion Dam - named for Benjamin Goodwin, then President of the SSJID Board. The dam was constructed at a cost of $325,000 & was a double concrete arch dam, 80 feet in height above the riverbed & 500 feet long on the crest. Water was first delivered in 1913 when Goodwin Dam was completed. From this dam, each district constructed main canals extending to their respective lands. The dam & the canals are present today & form the tail water fishery on the lower Stanislaus.

This history lesson tells us that this particular water has been isolated since then. Fish have not been planted here & you can find wild rainbows that differ in colors from Crimson Red to Steelhead Silver. You can find some of these crimson reds down below Goodwin on occasion, but their numbers are small compared to the silver trout. Trout in Goodwin are truly native on the most part. I'm sure some trout come down the line from Lake Tulloch above. Roy Gunter, owner of Goodwin Lake Vacation Rental, has caught a few Kokanee although not many in this water. The real prize is the large rainbows that lurk in the deep dark water. Every once in a while one will rise & give you a reminder of their massive size. The thing about this fishery is that there are many fish in this body of water that make the 20 in. mark.

I had the opportunity to fish with Roy this weekend. It's a beautiful setting & the weather down on the water is a real treat from the hot temperatures above the Reservoir. The water stays at a fairly steady temperature being it's coming out of the bottom of Tulloch Lake. The fish key in on small emergence patterns as well as baitfish which Roy and myself fished for the most part.

Roy really stresses using a heavy sink line such as a T-11 through 14. That is like an anchor for still water! I had the misfortune of breaking my 8-wt rod the very first cast which had the T-14 on it. The only line I had close to it was a 250-grain shooting head. Roy started ahead of me with a Black Seal Bugger & Brown Seal Bugger & immediately started hooking into fish. I had to redo my backup rod with 250 grain & knew I was going to be limited to shallower water.

So I threw my Black Seal Bugger into the shores hoping to ambush a feeding trout off the shelves. Well, it worked, but I must say Roy's rig worked better being he was down deeper. I figured the ratio to be about 1 fish to his 3. The fish were on the bite & we didn't even fish, but maybe 60 yards of productive waters by his house. This was not the first time fishing with Roy; he definitely has this place figured out. My biggest fish was a healthy 21 in. & several that went the 17 in. range that day.

On the way back towards his house I decided to fish with an indicator rig, something to do when you want to rest your arm after casting for hours. I tied on my tried & true Black Zebra Midge & a Copper John of my own making and landed 2 more on the way in--both taking the sz 14 Copper John. The end of a perfect fishing day! Good fishing!
