There was moldy food in the fridge and our deposit was not refunded

Please do not rent this house. There was old & moldy food in the fridge, the closets were jammed to the ceilings so there was no room to hang anything at all, there was an awful smell throughout the house, there were dirty clothes and towels in the hallway AND they did not give us back our deposit or any of the money that we paid even though we didn't stay there. This is all completely unacceptable and unethical.
Owner's Response: Things that are important: This renter asked to be let out of the contract at the last minute for some personal circumstances relating to one member of the party. We were away, and though we offered to do our best to re-rent for them, could not guarantee a refund (we were spending our vacation time trying to help even thought the contract specified 60 days notice for cancellations). The renter became hostile and the "review" posted was a reflection of that. On our end, we had a new cleaning lady, and she forgot the previous renter's food in the fridge (it was new food, not mouldy) and a basket of clean towels (some extras) in the hallway. I offered to send her back over immediately to take care of these matters but the renter refused the offer. And yes, I do keep two closets for my own storage, but provide large, empty dressers, cabinets and clothing racks to supplement. This is written in the home information. The home was inspected by 3 people in our absence and no odours or other conditions were reported. Upon our personal inspection we found things were lovely as usual. The renters we have had in past have left us personal notes, letters and drawings of thanks for our warmth and hospitalty, for the beautiful place and the nice touches of flowers and spices and wonderful energy of the house. We have always been big fans of VRBO and rent through them consistently. It seems this is a flaw in the process, simply because the review can be misused. My advice to homeowners would be to go the distance and ask for rewiews from all of those who love your property, so if someone does misuse the process it will be framed against a solid history of positive feedback.
