The owner Curtis Westphal: My wife Kathy is a part time school teacher and I am a city planner. We lived in Florida and met in college then headed west in search of adventure where we settled near Golden. The Rocky Mountains are out our back door. A couple times a year we hop on a flight and come down to relax on the beach and visit our relatives in Largo and Sarasota.
Bruce Carter purchased this cottage in 1996
I grew up here. My grandparents bought the island estate in 1966 for the remarkable price of $28,000 and turned the home and carriage house into 6 vacation rentals. They had the pleasure of watching 4 generations of beach goers come to enjoy fun in the sun. When they got into their 80's they retired and moved to the mainland. My wife Kathy and I thought it was too nice to sell so even though we live in Denver we bought it. Fortunately. we have a great manager and handyman close by to greet our guests and get them settled in and care for their needs. We have 2 sons that we take on vacation each summer.
Historically, the most beautiful spot on the tropical barrier islands of Tampa Bay between Clearwater and St Pete.
The private entrance had its own private patio and the main patio was only ten steps away. The view of the Gulf of Mexico from the room was magnificient!
The location right on the Gulf was picturesque! In the morning we would walk the white sand beach, just 100 feet from our door, as far as we could walk. We also enjoyed riding our bikes on the best bike paths I have ever seen. Along the new completed road there was both a walking and bike paths on both sides of the street. The beach was unbelieveable! Powder white sand and blue green water was just in front of our room. The salt breeze that flowed through our room was great.
In the evenings we would drive down Gulf Blvd and choose one of the many excellent seafood restaurants. There are also several coffee shops very close to Sun N Fun. Clearwater is 7 miles down Gulf Blvd where we took a boat ride in the Gulf seeing dolfins jumping in the boat's wake.
Each evening we would watch the sun go down into the Gulf from our patio. Such beauty
We arrived last minute and had the main house....much more room than we needed.....but we loved this beautiful old Florida beach home. Bed was very comfortable which is important for us and the view is breathtaking! There is nothing fancy but everything you need! We will be back and we want to bring our family!!!
A great place to stay. Relaxing, a place you could call home. Right on the beach with a great sunset.
My husband and I stayed in Unit 5, an efficiency, with a large window looking out to the beach. Just step out the door and walk across the small area in back, and you're on the beach, which is very quiet, almost no one there. It's very peaceful sitting in a rocking chair in the gazebo and watching the beautiful sunset. Lots of shore birds. The unit was not luxurious, but clean and quaint. We look forward to going back.
We rented all 6 units for a family of 14. Yes this is an old house, it takes awhile for the shower to warm up, some of the windows are a little hard to open. But I plan to come back!! You will feel very comfortable, and so much at home, here in this beach front cottage. We really enjoyed rounding up the chairs and getting together under the gazebo with coolers full of iced drinks. In the day we had shade from the hot sun, at night, the rope lights provided a soft ambient glow that made the conversation all the more delightful. and on a whim you can skip onto the softest beach sand and dip your feet into warm ocean waters of the Gulf of Mexico!
The location was ideal for a quiet getaway, you are surrounded by private residences, and yet you are within a short distance of some really delightful night spots like Crabby Bill's. We went to Guppy's for Surf and Turf one night. We also went up to Clearwater's Beach Walk and Pier 60. Frenchy's is also a great place to eat. There are so many places to eat, and easy to find on the internet. Which is why Sun N Fun cottage has Wi Fi. We really enjoyed having wi fi to search for places to eat and activities.
One of the advantages of having this beach house was the kitchen. With your own kitchen you can go out to eat, or make your own meal, or just throw a few steaks on the grill.
This is what a vacation is about, "Doing what you feel like doing, when you want to!" Sun N Fun Beach House gives you all of that in a comfortable cozy setting right on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Thanks Sun N Fun for wonderful memories,
Old Florida at it’s best. More than we expected. The views were breath taking. Sunsets, Sun rise, rolling quick rain storms! We left feeling a new appreciation for the beauty of the Gulf Coast. We will be back...... the location is unbeatable.
