SORRY, WE CANNOT ACCOMMODATE WEDDINGS.
This spectacular timber frame home was designed by one of Michigan's premier architectural firms, constructed in 2013 by one of Michigan's premier custom builders. It's design combines great detail and careful craftsmanship, creating a rustic refinement that can come only with the use of the finest natural materials. Interior finishes, colors, and lighting were designer - facilitated. The home takes full advantage of its location, offering wonderful Lake Michigan views from nearly ever room. WESTWIND is the last of three dwellings on a private lane. It is located directly on 100 feet of private Lake Michigan beachfront. Despite the secluded remote feel of the property, it is less than ten minutes away from the shops, galleries and restaurants of Saugatuck.
The south property line abuts the north boundary of Saugatuck Dunes State Park, featuring 41 miles of hiking trails interlacing 1000 undeveloped acres. The eastern border of the property meets with designated forest preserve. As you descend the thirty user-friendly steps to the beachfront, you will see to your north a smattering of well - maintained lakefront homes. 4 miles further northward, conditions permitting, you can make out 'Big Red', the lighthouse that overlooks the pier of Holland, Michigan. To the south you will see only forested, unspoiled, natural bluff, rolling sawgrass-covered dune, and some of the world's finest beach meeting the water. This stretches 2 1/2 miles to the south, where the Saugatuck channel pierhead is faintly visible. Explore the adjacent dunes and forest, or just relax on the beach directly below WESTWIND. Those large birds surveying the coastline, chasing away the gulls to claim a prize on the beach, or cruising on the thermals are probably resident bald eagles, which are often seen on site.
Local maintenance and caretaker are available for any needs or questions that may arise.
WESTWIND's main level features a striking great room, beckoning you with a stunning view of Lake Michigan seen through the west bay window as you enter the front door. Soaring Douglas fir timbers apex to a 30 foot lofted ceiling. An oversized fieldstone fireplace is room's centerpiece, surrounded by comfortable seating with great views of the beach and Lake Michigan. French doors open to a generous deck, part of which becomes enclosed by 'Phantom Shades' which descend at the touch of a button to create a screened - in covered porch. The expansive west deck outside the great room overlooks a short run of sawgrass, a low bluff, and the beach thirty steps below. Plentiful deck furniture for enclosed porch area, west deck lake viewing, lower level patio rockers, and outside of main level master and additional second floor master private deck/balcony areas.
The home has four levels including a fourth - story crow's nest with balcony, and a walkout lower level. The home was designed and built for function, with emphasis on detail, natural materials and quality appointments. The goal of design was to eliminate trendiness and create a cozy feel despite a large overall size. WESTWIND fits into it's setting naturally, dwarfed by towering dunes on three sides.
The 1st master bedroom suite is located on the main floor and features beach and forest views, with french doors opening to it's own deck area. The 1st master also offers a large walk-in closet and a king bed. The second master suite is on the level above the main, with a tasteful old-fashioned metal queen bed and french doors opening to it's own private balcony, which directly overlooks Lake Michigan to the west, and forested dune to the south. Both master suites offer private commode rooms within private bathrooms. All cabinetry throughout is custom designed specifically for WESTWIND, and created by local west-Michigan craftsmen. Heated floors and spa-quality features are present in each of these suites, including a luxurious soaking tub, steam shower, multi-jet showers, and private commode rooms. Two additional full bedroom suites are located on the lower level, each with it's own private full bath. Each of these four bedrooms have full views of Lake Michigan. One of the lower level suites is fitted with a queen bed, the other with a twin-over-full bunk bed. These two lower-level suites flank the 'lake room' which features exposed timber frame, eleven foot ceiling, it's own oversized fireplace, and french doors opening to the Lake. Also on the ground floor is the south beach entrance where towels and beach supplies are kept. A warm, outdoor body/foot shower is present on the small patio outside the beach entrance.
Lower level flooring is imported Indian slate. All other levels feature best-available quality reclaimed oak flooring throughout. On the second level, a cat - walk crosses over the great room below. To the south is the 2nd master. To the north is the library, stocked with reading material (vintage HG Wells!), it's own remote controlled sound system, and a comfortable love seat perfectly positioned to gaze down on the dune grass and beach through it's own west window. The library is clad in custom - built walnut cabinetry and houses a five-foot circular window looking north, which is set behind a helical stair that rises to the fourth-floor crow's nest. The crow's nest offers more spectacular views and it's own fourth-floor balcony; another perfect spot to sit and read.
The library love seat opens to a full bed, converting the library-loft into a special sleeping suite, replete with it's own luggage and hanging closet, and a full bathroom all it's own.
A large, over-garage loft features beautiful wide - plank oak flooring, exposed beams and rustic knotty pine siding on the vertical walls. A full bathroom with custom shower and quality fixtures consistent with those throughout the home caters to occupants of two full beds. A day-plus-trundle bed offers additional sleeping space.
Westwind's main floor kitchen opens to the great room in one direction and the dining room in the other. The kitchen is at once cozy, open, stylish, and a world-class culinary venue. The stove is a home centerpiece. It is a stunning burgundy, stainless and brass 60' La Cornue range that was custom ordered for WESTWIND, then hand - built in France by a single individual. It features six high - capacity gas burners , two european dome ovens, and matching oversized Monsoon hood. The three kitchen sinks include a French farmhouse main sink by Herbeau, and a porcelain prep sink by La Cornue. An additional polished stainless prep sink is located within a dedicated coffee/cappuccino bar. The kitchen's island easily accommodates 4-5 eaters. The kitchen's breakfast nook seats 4. The contiguous dining room table seats 8. A peninsula between the kitchen and dining room houses a popup TV.
CELL PHONES DO NOT WORK ON PREMISES. WI FI IS PRESENT SO YOU CAN USE OUR OWN OR YOUR MUSIC SOURCE TO PLAY ON OUR SYSTEM. INTERNET SERVICE MAY BE SLOW AND LIMITED.
Just outside the kitchen is the covered porch, the perfect place for your morning coffee or a relaxed evening meal, just off the outdoor grilling deck.
An elevator services the home's three primary levels.
The main laundry area is fitted with an over-sized porcelain sink, built-in ironing board and generous folding area. A second laundry area is located off the beach entrance.
Ample parking is on hand with a three stall garage plus a large outdoor parking lot to the east. Two of the garage stalls are extra deep (26') and the third 'Vespa garage' is small to house scooters, bicycles, or a subcompact car. Custom-made mahogany doors are located at the front, garage side, and utility hall entry area, matching the three 9' mahogany garage doors (but the garage doors will not clear 9' because they are arched at the top!)
WESTWIND is a little over 6,880 square feet of highly detailed living space. No smoking please. You must be 25 or older to rent this property.
Bedding, bath towels, and beach towels are provided. Four additional folding chairs are available for deck or beach use, along with a cooler, two umbrellas, and beach blankets.
This is a quiet, peaceful location with enough space on three + floors to allow you and your family / friends to have both privacy and togetherness.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park is literally next door, with 1000 acres of forest and dunes, over 40 miles of hiking trails, and 2 1/2 miles undeveloped beachfront. Spend your days on WESTWIND's private beach, or take the short drive or bike ride to explore Saugatuck/Douglas, Michigan's 'Art Coast'. There you can enjoy fine shopping and entertainment with live music, and very good live theater, restaurants, and galleries. Other activities include boating, sport fishing, and running on the beach for unencumbered miles. Also popular are wind or kite surfing, kite surfing, hang gliding, swimming, dune buggy rides, jet skiing, sailing, and paddle boarding. Or, try your hand at berry or fruit picking at one of the many local orchards, take it home to WESTWIND and create something scrumptious! Snow boarding, skiing, snowshoeing and ice-sailing and hot cocoa-fireplace staring are available in winter time, not to mention amazing winter views.
Every sight, touch, smell, and emotion is overwhelmed with subtle elegance. Nothing is contrived as an overstatement or gaudy attempt to fake luxury. The home is right in every way. I wish I could buy it.
All amenities from the linens to the soaps, the world class kitchen to the state of the art Espresso machine, and the craftsmanship everywhere make you wonder how you ever deserve to live like this. I have never been in a home that was perfect. If you could stay in the Biltmore mansion you would miss this home.
An amazing visit, as the accommodations and location are perfect for the family that wants privacy, but still close to it all. The beach is as good as any we have been to in the world. This is truly a trip our family will not soon forget. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to create those picture perfect vacation memories.
The weekend went great! The house had everything we needed for the weekend trip with designers from Chicago. It was great! Everyone had a great time. The views are spectacular and the sunsets all 3 nights were amazing. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend in a great house. Close enough to Saugatuck, but away from it all. I would definitely rent this house again!
This impeccable home, offering gorgeous views of Lake Michigan, was just completed in 2013, and the owners clearly thought of everything to make this retreat sing with beauty and comfort. All the materials, appliances, and other features are first rate. Beach access is a key criterion for my family, and we have never experienced such an easy descent to the beach -- there is a wonderful stairway with landings (with benches!) to ease your path up and down. We hosted 3 generations of our family there for a week, and due to the size of the house and the bedroom/bath feature, each group had plenty of privacy. The eating nook in the kitchen is very convenient for feeding kids, and there are not one, but two, laundry rooms. The bathrooms are state of the art - with fantastic showers. The house was spotlessly clean, and all the linens were of high quality. The owners are gems - the most considerate landlords you will ever encounter. They even arranged for a catered dinner on our first evening; ours was a gourmet treat. Our toughest decision each night was which vantage point we should use to watch the sunset - one of the many balconies or the specially screened porch!!
Beautiful home. Great location. First class accommodations. Lots of room for our big family but still a cozy, warm feeling . Beautiful sunsets.
