1/2 mile - St. Benedict's Painted Church; This present church was erected in 1899 by Father John Velghe. Without any professional training and using house paint on ordinary wood he beautified the church with his paintings. In those days few Hawaiians could read and so he taught with pictures-most successfully.
2 miles - Puuhonua o Honaunau immerses you in Hawaiian culture. This 180-acre national historic park was once the home of royal grounds and a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers. Take your early dinner to the picnic area and watch the sun set.
6 miles - Kealakekua Bay & Minini Beach - fabulous snorkeling.
6 miles - Hookena Beach - great for kayaking, dolphin and whale watching, and body surfing.
75 miles - Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is a fascinating world of active volcanism, biological diversity, and Hawaiian culture, past and present. The Park has been honored as both an International Biosphere Reserve (1980) and a World Heritage Site (1987).
