Why Marsha Carlton chose Mathews

Mathews / Gloucester Courthouse area is filled with miles of pristine water coastline and friendly owner-run businesses.

Yet you are less than an hour to major airports, world-class museums, golf and theme parks. The abundance of locally available seafood, wine & produce is our favorite part of this area!

What makes this house unique

The North River is the gold coast of the area, lined with historic farms and equestrian properties. Whether you want to fish, sail, kayak, bike, paddleboard or stretch out in a hammock, this is a perfect location.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed ourselves at your house, one of the most comfortable beds we have ever

slept in. We got to watch the bald eagle hunt almost every morning.

It was so quiet and peaceful.

We were amazed at how little boat traffic was on the river, that is what makes your place unique.

Navigation on the river was not a problem, there are enough markers so you can stay in the channel. They do have an oyster reef that is marked about a mile down from the house, you

need to stay to the right heading down the river. Fishing was fantastic! We caught lots of big speckled trout down in Mobjack Bay heading toward the East River. The dock is one of

the best we have ever used and the boat ramp is very convenient.

It was also nice catching crabs while sitting on the dock watching the sunset. Nice crabs!

I recently booked a group ranging from toddlers to seniors for a stay at this location. When we turned into the driveway for this property, it was a "booking.yeah" moment for the group! The view here is spectacular. Several in our group had made plans for area activities but canceled these as the week progressed in favor of enjoying time at the property. Everything that is advertised on this site is true, but the house is far better than advertised. From the thoughtful extras the owners have put in the home to the cleanliness and quality of the property, this location will be one of our favorites for years to come. We have already referred others to make reservations for next year!

We also rented the guesthouse for our stay and this additional building was MUCH nicer than expected. If you are considering the extra building, it is just as enjoyable as the main house.

While it is true that the location is away from major roads and businesses, grocery stores, Wal-Mart, and shopping are a shorter drive than we anticipated. The fishing, pool, and views were wonderful.

This was one of the more relaxing experiences my group has enjoyed. I highly recommend this location to all interested parties!

Exceptional property! Best of the Best!

  • 5 of 5

Our family comes together once every 2 years for a family getaway, this year we chose this slice of heaven in Mathews, VA. My family has a broad range of interests, active lifestyles, swimmers, sun bathers, nature enthusiasts, foodies, and history buffs....all were more than pleased with the amenities that this property offered. Comfy beds, well appointed bathrooms, a great kitchen, SPACE, a great pool, and those phenomenal views of the River. The owner, Marcia, was a great communicator! She checked in via text or phone, almost clairvoyantly knowing when I might have a question. I have rented many a house listed here on VRBO....and this is the first time I was compelled to pen a review. If in doubt, I say pick this property. You will not regret your decision!

Perfect Home for Recreation and Relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four stayed here for Spring Break. The home was plenty big for our family and many more! Everything in the home is well appointed, and it truly felt like a "home away from home" with its well stocked kitchen, extremely comfortable beds & linens, and plush towels. We enjoyed everything about the home, from the peaceful deep water dock (we caught croaker in the spring!), to the many mature trees, the great pool and games area, the excellent bird watching, and the magnificently restored home. We had a lot of fun around the house (digging for oysters, finding old artifacts on the beach, etc.) - but there are also many things to do within a short drive as well (Williamsburg, Yorktown, Newport News). We had the added pleasure of meeting the Owner, Marsha. She was extremely helpful throughout our stay and very easy to communicate with. This place will not disappoint!

Trip to Mathews

  • 5 of 5

We hit the jackpot with this house. Everything is top notch and in great condition. I've stayed at numerous VRBO homes , and this is by far the nicest place we have ever stayed. I would highly recomend it to anyone looking for a get away trip for a family or group of friends. You can stay on the property and go swimming, kayaking, fish and crab off the dock, play vollyball, horsehoes, ...Homeowner was extremely helpful and went to great lenghts to ensure we had a fantastic time. Looking forward to a return trip.

Most relaxing vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

Our family vacation at the River House was perfect in every way (except for the ray sting sustained by one son!). The house is beautifully and thoughtfully appointed, including binoculars and spotlights in a basket by the front door, bird identification books, books of area history, maps and local info. Beds are comfortable and bathrooms have many pampering extras. When we encountered a wi-fi problem, the owner had a new unit overnighted to us and followed up with us to make sure everything was working properly. We enjoyed the kayaks, the crab pots, fishing off the dock, the croquet, the pool, the horseshoes - there was so much to do we only left for a half-day in Williamsburg! The kitchen is well-equipped and it was a pleasure having access to the fresh herbs in the garden. The charming housekeeper left us a coconut cake at our arrival and checked in with us midweek to see if we needed anything. An exceptional experience all around!!

Fairytale Farmhouse on the Water

  • 5 of 5

You always hold your breath a little when you drive up to a vacation rental for the first time.

I must say we were amazed and totally charmed the minute we drove in and saw the beautiful farmhouse with the romantic willow tree and the water views on all sides. Definitely a home run!

The house had plenty of space for our extended family and the beds and linens are the best we

have experienced in a vacation rental. We loved having all the king bedrooms - no one felt like

they had to compromise. The owners provided all paper products, soap and shampoo

- which made shopping for the week very simple. And the house was immaculately clean !

Obviously the owners have taken great care to make their guests feel totally at home.

We used the herb garden every day - made pesto with the abundant basil.

The kids loved the pool and we pitched horseshoes and sat around the firepit in the evenings.

Living in the city, you forget how bright the stars can be!

We found the binder of local info very helpful. It had menus from local restaurants plus spots to

buy seafood that we would have never found on our own. We highly recommend Merroir - the oyster

tasting room in Topping - fresh oysters and fresh local cuisine in a very relaxed setting on the water.

Our daytrip to Williamsburg was an easy drive - but the rest of the vacation we wanted to stay at

the house and swim, rest in the hammock and sit on the porch - waiting for the beautiful sunsets

over the water. Thank you for a making this great property available - we can't wait to come back

next year.
