Overview

Shaftsbury Barn Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom + large loft, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 comfortably (8 max).

Spend the month, week or weekend in a beautiful rustic converted barn on 6.5 very private sunny country acres with southerly long-range views of Mount Anthony and the Bennington Monument (Stays of 2 or more weeks are progressively discounted depending on the length of the stay). Wander the park-like trails through 4 acres of old apple orchard and woodland. Why get a bed and breakfast when you can have a house and land all to yourself? This vacation rental is located in southwestern Vermont, less than 12 minutes from downtown Bennington (but still feels very quiet and secluded). Pick apples, bird-watch, and view other wildlife like deer, grouse, wild turkeys, rabbits, and an occasional black bear that wanders through the property. Excellent fly fishing on the nearby Battenkill river. Attend the summer horse shows in nearby Manchester. Enjoy the world-famous Vermont fall foliage. Watch the flowers bloom in the spring. Enjoy a bon-fire in the back-yard. Five major ski areas are located within an hour's drive. House is fully furnished and has slate shower, bear-claw bath tub, gas cooking stove (*see below), microwave, refrigerator, cable, DVD/VCR, and wireless internet, plus two wood stoves and free wood to keep you warm at night (There's also central air heating if needed). There's a large downstairs master bedroom with its own gas stove/fireplace for ambiance and extra heat. There is a living room, dining area, and another small room that could sleep 2 with large electric blowup mattress on site. A spiral staircase leads up to a large loft with a spring mattress futon. The barnhouse was actually part of a large picturesque Vermont farm just up the dirt road (and viewable from parts of the property) until it was rolled down on logs and converted into a house some years ago.

* The antique gas stove has an oven that only gets hot enough for warming foods. The burners up top work just fine. There is a plug-in GE electric roaster oven available that can cook up to an 18lb turkey and also has bread pans for cooking loaves of bread. It is easy to clean too.

*** Contact me for additional information on steep discounts for stays of 2 or more weeks.

About Lars

Lars (pictured here with his childhood sweetheart and wife Kristen) teaches high school biology, chemistry, and environmental science just outside of Philadelphia. He is a VERY avid skier who also enjoys camping, hiking, mountaineering, kite-surfing, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and spending time with his wife and children. Kristen teaches electronic engineering at the college level and is an avid wind surfer, hiker, and quickly improving skier.

Lars purchased this barn in 2003

Why Lars chose Shaftsbury

This is the perfect property to relax and unwind in total privacy. Vermont in general is a very relaxed, friendly place. If you are looking for stress reduction, a romantic get-away, and tons of outdoor activities, you found the perfect place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We recently spent one week at the barn during Thanksgiving. It was an idyllic place, perfect for relaxing and spending time with family and friends. The barn was warm and cozy. It took very little effort to keep the wood stove going. I could see myself spending a month at the barn - hibernating with a pile of books and taking leisurely walks around the property. It was very comfortable to share with three teenage girls. They occupied the loft area and we had a bedroom to ourselves. Thanks you Lars!

Cozy

We had a great week up in Vermont. Lars was super accommodating and took the time to make sure we had everything we needed. The house has so many intricate features that will keep you staring. It also provided us with plenty of room to spread out after a long day of skiing. The wood-burning stove was icing on the cake. We will definitely be staying again.

Much Needed Escape

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a nice getaway for a long weekend for my girlfriend and myself. Specifically, I wanted someplace nice and warm and secluded with just the right amount of uniqueness to make for an unforgettable trip. This place delivered.

Before arrival, Lars was very attentive to what I was looking for and making sure that I had everything I needed for the stay. He made sure I knew he was easily accessible if I needed him. But mainly, we tried to manage ourselves, and had a great time doing so. We chose one of the coldest weekends to go up, but the place was very comfortable when we got a fire going in the woodstove (plus the heat was always there as a fail-safe). It felt great to be holed up from the outside cold and snow. My girlfriend loved the look of the place and was a big fan of the claw-foot bathtub; I preferred the couch. The place was nice and quiet, and we enjoyed sitting by the fire and watching a few movies. The week-end and the barn were exactly what we were looking for.

Awesome place to get away

  • 5 of 5

One of the best things I can say about our time there is that there was nothing that was not as good as we hoped for and most was better than we hoped for. Our jaws dropped as soon as we entered the barn it was really nice, well decorated, and very comfortable. We really enjoyed the privacy, you feel so secluded and the the same time there is a lot space in and around the barn and we enjoyed it all. Bennington is short drive and we found plenty to do there. There is an awesome coffee shop with great gourmet coffees, and my wife became best friends with one antique dealers. The other great thing I can say is that it rained most of the week we were there and we still cannot wait to go back. Maybe our best vacation in our thirty years together.

Charming Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We loved this charming cabin! The location was ideal; breathtaking mountain views in a private setting yet minutes away from excellent restaurants (Pangaea Restaurant in North Bennington), shopping (Bennington Potters), and Bennington College. The inside was beautifully decorated, with a large master bedroom, private loft, and cozy living room. The owners were easily accessible and accommodating. We would highly recommend it to friends, and we plan to return.

A very special place

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent a wholly relaxing week here. We were thrilled to have so much space to ourselves as we normally live in a densely populated area where the homes are 10 feet apart. So much thought has been given to every little detail, inside the property and out. The trails were fun to explore, and we enjoyed sitting under the willow tree in the front yard, taking in the view of the mountain in the distance. The house itself was comfortable and welcoming - you can't beat having the wood stove available for maximum coziness on a chilly evening. I loved the vaulted ceiling, wooden beams, clawfoot tub, and comfortable furniture (really important if you are coming here to completely chill out). We did explore beyond the property, and the location was super convenient when we realized we needed a few items for dinner from the store. We enjoyed hiking through Green Mountain National Forest and took a couple of day trips to nearby Wilmington and Brattleboro. It was just perfect - I can't say enough good things. A very special place indeed.
