Shaftsbury Barn Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom + large loft, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 comfortably (8 max).

Spend the month, week or weekend in a beautiful rustic converted barn on 6.5 very private sunny country acres with southerly long-range views of Mount Anthony and the Bennington Monument (Stays of 2 or more weeks are progressively discounted depending on the length of the stay). Wander the park-like trails through 4 acres of old apple orchard and woodland. Why get a bed and breakfast when you can have a house and land all to yourself? This vacation rental is located in southwestern Vermont, less than 12 minutes from downtown Bennington (but still feels very quiet and secluded). Pick apples, bird-watch, and view other wildlife like deer, grouse, wild turkeys, rabbits, and an occasional black bear that wanders through the property. Excellent fly fishing on the nearby Battenkill river. Attend the summer horse shows in nearby Manchester. Enjoy the world-famous Vermont fall foliage. Watch the flowers bloom in the spring. Enjoy a bon-fire in the back-yard. Five major ski areas are located within an hour's drive. House is fully furnished and has slate shower, bear-claw bath tub, gas cooking stove (*see below), microwave, refrigerator, cable, DVD/VCR, and wireless internet, plus two wood stoves and free wood to keep you warm at night (There's also central air heating if needed). There's a large downstairs master bedroom with its own gas stove/fireplace for ambiance and extra heat. There is a living room, dining area, and another small room that could sleep 2 with large electric blowup mattress on site. A spiral staircase leads up to a large loft with a spring mattress futon. The barnhouse was actually part of a large picturesque Vermont farm just up the dirt road (and viewable from parts of the property) until it was rolled down on logs and converted into a house some years ago.

* The antique gas stove has an oven that only gets hot enough for warming foods. The burners up top work just fine. There is a plug-in GE electric roaster oven available that can cook up to an 18lb turkey and also has bread pans for cooking loaves of bread. It is easy to clean too.

*** Contact me for additional information on steep discounts for stays of 2 or more weeks.

Why Lars chose Shaftsbury

This is the perfect property to relax and unwind in total privacy. Vermont in general is a very relaxed, friendly place. If you are looking for stress reduction, a romantic get-away, and tons of outdoor activities, you found the perfect place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We recently spent one week at the barn during Thanksgiving. It was an idyllic place, perfect for relaxing and spending time with family and friends. The barn was warm and cozy. It took very little effort to keep the wood stove going. I could see myself spending a month at the barn - hibernating with a pile of books and taking leisurely walks around the property. It was very comfortable to share with three teenage girls. They occupied the loft area and we had a bedroom to ourselves. Thanks you Lars!

A Beautiful Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5
Lars made every effort to ensure we enjoyed our stay. We particularly liked having the house and garden to ourselves, it was so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed exploring the garden trails, there were so many places to sit we were spoilt for choice, Kids would have a great time here. The house had everything we needed to cook all our own meals, the self controlling ring on the hob was great, wish they put them on modern cookers!
During our stay we visited, Hildene, Bennington Monument, the Museum and did the Skyline Drive up Mt Equinox, all of which we enjoyed.
We would thoroughly recommend this property.

Beautiful setting, wonderful house

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay here -- the converted barn is just gorgeous, comfy furnishings, super quiet. The kitchen is indeed rustic, but that is part of the fun -- and encourages you to take a break from cooking elaborate meals. It is very homey, with lots of curios and books, but was also impressively clean when we arrived. We had deer bounding through the yard, tons of birds, rabbits, and you could hear the coyotes howling at night -- fantastic! We'll definitely stay again.

Super Cool, Funky, Roomy, and Clean

  • 5 of 5
This place was awesome, it had everything we needed and then some. The inside is so unique and charming with plenty of room for 10 people. The grounds are amazing, paths cut thru the thick vegetation that loops around the property with numerous turns and areas of seating. It is a must!! I would go back to this place anytime. Very clean conditions and that comes from someone who owns a cleaning service.(me) My Kids enjoyed it and wished we had a house just like it, and so do I.

Absolutely Wonderful

  • 5 of 5
We had a great stay in this wonderful converted barn! It was better then described, and has everything you could possibly want - games, books, etc. The kitchen is "rustic" (no dishwasher or working oven), but certainly not a dealbreaker. My only complaint is that we didn't stay long enough!! I'll definately stay here again if I'm lucky enough to be in the area.

Great Honeymoon Location

  • 5 of 5
This converted barn was a great place to begin our marriage. The location was secluded and quiet. The barn was clean and in the exact condition shown online. It is quaintly decorated and has an eccentric rustic feel. The owner, Lars, knows the place inside and out. He was great to talk to and was very accessible with any questions we had. There are nice restaurants and shops in town, only about a 5 minute drive away. We recommend "Bagels and WhatNosh" in Bennington. We hope to return to the cabin in the future.

Amazing Place

  • 5 of 5
The property was beautiful and the house was cozy and full of homey touches. It was a good blend of the rustic (wood-fire stoves and antiques) with the modern (river slate shower and super plush couches). The property is secluded enough that we saw a small group of white-tailed deer and a pair of rabbits more than once throughout the weekend. Appreciated the little library, especially the hiking books that helped my wife and I find some good trails nearby. Also it's a great value for the cost--definitely recommend staying here if you're looking for someplace to relax or a base camp for exploring the Green Mountains.
