The kitchen is fully equipped for meal preparation with a four burner stove, oven and under-counter refrigerator. There is also an outdoor BBQ for all your grilling needs. Lace covered French doors separate the exquisite bathroom, with a claw foot steeping tub/shower and a stunning bowl sink on a redwood countertop. The Little Gem is built out of the finest materials including redwood, tumbled marble, and art glass lighting. The retreat is meticulously cleaned with non-toxic, eco and allergy friendly cleaners, is pet dander free, and features sparkling white linens line dried in the Big Sur sun.

Outside the wrap-around balcony with bistro dining area offers a breathtaking view of the valley below, ridges, and the surrounding forest. Gaze at the stars, unobstructed by city lights.

The Property:

Heart Circle Mountain is in the Goldilocks Zone. Above the fog-line but below hotter and higher altitudes which can be buggy. Heart Circle has a unique and sunny microclimate that is filled with wildlife including deer, foxes, squirrels, quail, birds of prey and bobcats.

Our two private hiking trails lie just outside your door and promise a unique Big Sur experience with many lounge areas outfitted with 2-person hammocks, tables and chairs or benches, perfect for a picnic or a glass of wine.

The Waterfall Trail meanders through a redwood forest along a private section of Palo Colorado Creek and includes two lounge areas. The halfway point is the Forest Glen: a magical area on the creek with an old growth redwood fairy ring soaring overhead surrounded by a lush forest floor of sorrel and ferns. Continuing into the redwoods at the trails end you will find a second lounging area set in an intimate forest setting with a tranquil pool at the base of a 10 ft granite waterfall, surrounded by ferns, horsetails, redwoods and oaks.

The Zen Trail gently climbs up Garrapata Ridge and offers spectacular ocean, mountain, and valley views. The trail passes over our local fox’s den who might grace you with a sighting. At trails end you will find a magical lounging area nestled under a natural oak arbor with a view of the pacific ocean beyond and the dramatic ridge lines. A perfect spot to watch the red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons fly overhead while enjoying gorgeous sunsets.

You won't have to drive anywhere to explore the beauty of Big Sur! Of course there are endless possibilities for many adventures along the coast or in the Ventana Wilderness a few miles away!

About Andrew & Brianne

Hello! We are the owners of Heart Circle Mountain Retreat. We love Heart Circle, and have been able to continue our passion for design when creating each unique retreat. We put thought and care into designing and furnishing the retreats. We originally created them for our immediate family. We are now excited to open the retreats to more people who want to experience the healing tranquility and beauty of Heart Circle Mountain.

Andrew & Brianne purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Andrew & Brianne chose Big Sur

We find the location of Heart Circle Mountain to be naturally healing. The climate, 360 views, and privacy all come together to create a place of peace and serenity. We consider living on this land to be the most precious gift, and have devoted ourselves to caring for it, from the green forest to the aqua blue ocean. The retreats have scenic roads in all directions and we are close to the Villages we love.

What makes this cabin unique

The circular driveway, ridges and mountains, all encircle the mountain on which the retreat sits, is unique to this property, and is the reason for the name, Heart Circle Mountain. The rich and abundant animal and plant life also provide us with extraordinary experiences on a daily basis. We are able to offer private hiking trails because of the large acreage, which is rarely available in Big Sur with diverse flora and fauna on one property. Enjoy idyllic Big Sur beauty, fresh & deep spring water, healing nature and rare ancient redwoods. Wild luxury on the edge of the world...

Amazing Place

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I came here for two nights. We were looking for privacy, beautiful outdoors and a comfortable place to cook, hang out and sleep. The Little Gem was perfect for us. We didn't see another human being for our entire stay, which was great! This is the place to get away from it all. As other visitors have mentioned, there are 4 hammocks within a few minutes of walking, and they are perfectly placed. One is on an overlook where you can see the ocean and hills in the distance. One is right outside the cabin, and two more are down a trail to the forest glen/waterfall. It was quiet, but there is plenty of wildlife and natural beauty to explore. The cabin itself had everything we needed, and we had a fire in the wood burning stove both nights. I left feeling refreshed and thankful for our time in Big Sur.

Nice place to stay!

  • 5 of 5
Our stay here was excellent! Very serene and peaceful, but not difficult to get to. Big Sur was amazing and the cabin had everything we needed. The kitchen makes it very easy to whip up a meal without going into town. The cabin is well maintained and looks regularly cleaned. We would definitely stay here again!

Small, but perfectly formed

  • 5 of 5
With all the comforts and amenities of a hotel room, with added charm and added utility, the Little Gem lived up to its billing. A compact little cabin, as an architect I found myself wondering at the way it provided all the things one would want in such a tidy, well furnished package.

As a previous reviewer noted communication with the owners was straightforward and trouble free and with plenty of information from them about local walks and sightseeing spots, as well as good recommendations for food, I was pleased with the level of service on my stay.

Finally, a note to those in lower, sportier cars: the exit from the property onto Palo Colorado road is a steep one, something to remember if you leave the premises for the first time at night. Just take it easy and everything should go ok.

Relaxing and comfortable getaway

  • 5 of 5
My fiancé and I had been wanting to explore Big Sur area for a while. We looked around for a few spots and decided on the Little Gem house. We are so glad we stayed there! All communication was handled easily before and after our stay, which is a huge plus with vacation rentals.

We hiked and enjoyed the property. It's so quiet and beautiful. Stress and worry just wash away. We cooked in the kitchen and tended to a fire - which we love doing!! I even read while taking a bath. Everything you need is there.

The house is perfect for 2 people and it's super nice. It's small but you realize how little space you really need. The hand soap is to die for --I forgot to ask what it is because I want to buy it..or want the recipe.

We loved being away from cell service and internet. We had a little bit of work for our web based charity and were able to easily connect and get our work done. Then quickly put our computers away. You can also bop up to Carmel (20 min) easily or hike at Garrapata or Point Lobos.

I definitely suggest the Little Gem for anyone wanting to relax and get grounded. Beautiful spot and super romantic.

Great place to relax and unwind, off the beaten path

  • 5 of 5
The Little Gem cabin is a perfect spot to "unplug" if you're looking for a private, cozy rental away from the bustle of the more popular resorts in the Big Sur area. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking, and there are some very cool hiking trails on the property. There is a wooden deck facing a large hill that rises up behind the cabin, in addition to an outdoor lounging area with a comfy hammock. Very relaxing! Amenities are very nice. This isn't the spot for rowdy social gatherings, and it's unlikely you'll be able to get a cell phone signal. For our purposes that suited us just fine! It was the perfect spot to return to after spending the day exploring everything the Big Sur region has to offer.

A wonderful haven

  • 5 of 5
Do you like hammocks? I do - I was really excited that I would have a hammock right outside my cozy little cabin. I was on a solo trip, a retreat to refresh my brain, and I was looking forward to some hammock meditation. And while it was nice to have one so close to my front door, the true magic of the Little Gem opened up when I decided that I'd take a chance on their on-property hiking trails. It either didn't say how close everything was, or I missed it, but I packed my bag with snacks and water to last me a good trek... only to find that I had three other mini-havens at my fingertips! Maybe five to ten minutes of casual walking, and I found myself up in the hills with the low fog rolling over the hill I was nearly atop of, or the burble of the little waterfall in a secluded nook, or the redwood glade with a stream running beside it. Each site has its own hammock, and it's own table and chairs.

OK, besides the hammocks - the place is awe inspiringly beautiful. It's a retreat - so don't expect cell coverage unless you have AT&T and decide to connect to the microcell there. The wireless doesn't reliably reach the cabin, but I have to say that was part of its charm. If I needed to pop off a quick email, I could walk maybe a dozen paces towards the caretakers property and I'd be covered, and there were plenty of benches to sit and browse the Internet on your phone.

The cabin itself was cozy - I'd say that could be a bad thing in terms of having the potential of having your own space, but see again how there are four hammocks, all spaced out wonderfully, for when you need some alone time. The little fireplace warmed the place up, and even came with handy suggestions on how to get it going for less hardy folk like myself. An oven, stove-top, kettle, and all sorts of kitchen accoutrements make it an ideal place to bring food for a picnic - I made myself pasta, salad, and sandwiches to cover my four day weekend. Big Sur is nearby and beautiful, but I'd highly recommend just staying on property and allowing the majesty of the redwoods to overtake you. Lots of hot water, a big comfy bed, and so many places to take a picnic indoors or outdoors.

I almost don't want to write this review because I don't want the place to get so popular I can't come back... but this is a place to treasure, and be shared with the world. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
