This is a quiet retreat on South Point at the top of Discovery Harbour, where the weather is not too hot or cold year round. There is no satellite,or cable,(but wi-fi is available on request) so feel free to disconnect from the rest of the world and enjoy all the island has to offer. The coffeemaker has a builtin grinder for whole beans, so enjoy a cup of local coffee on the lanai.
Volcano National Park is 30 minutes away. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is 10 minutes away, and the Punaluu golf course is close to the beach.
Naalehu, the southernmost town in the U.S., is 2 miles away and offers a good farmer's market on Wdenesdays. The bakery is worth the trip, and we reccomend the Hana Hau Restatraunt as well.
Whittington Park offers great oceanside picnicking and tidal pools to explore. South Point is beautiful with the sea caves and cliff divers, and Green Sands is worth the trip.
The house has 2 queen beds and 2 twin beds. There is a TV and DVD player. There is a Redbox location in Ocean View, 10 minutes down the road.
Keywords: 3 bed, 2 bath ranch near the top of Discovery Harbour
We fell in love with Hawaii when we went on a second honeymoon. South Point is quiet and rural, just the way we like it. We live about an hour outside of Chicago, and enjoy some of the amenities that a big city has to offer, but prefer a more quiet life, at home and on vacation. We enjoy traveling with our girls, and as a family like to explore God's creation. Living on the Great Lakes made us look for water, and we enjoy the ocean and all it has to offer.
Mark and Maggie Dudash purchased this house in 2010
We chose South Point for its quiet rural setting and proximity to the National Park. We enjoy hiking and kayaking, and sitting on the shore listening to the ocean. We also like the tradewinds and cooler temperatures at night.
The local coffee is great. We love the access to Farmers' Markets and fruit stands. Volcano Village and Naalehu are quiet towns with a unique Island character that we appreciate. The fact that we're halfway between Hilo and Kona give us the advantage of both sides of the island to explore.
This house is in a little neighborhood about 40 minutes from the National Park. There is so much room that, while we had 3, we were thinking we could have added another family and been comfortable. There are a number of activities within minutes (South Point, coffee mill, lava tube, etc.) If you are looking for a quiet place to stay, this is it.
All three of us found our vacation rental to be exceptional. Located in a nice quite neighbourhood, it was stocked with all the necessities (towels, bedding, dish soap) plus all those things you might need but may forget - salt, pepper, mayonnaise, oil, laundry soap, sunscreen, shampoo, first aid kit and a great selection of guide books, local birds and plants books, movies, and books. The house was spacious and clean. The caretaker lives next door and was gave us lots of good info on what to see locally (sites and markets) plus other things on the island that we may not have thought of. Reasonably priced, friendly, clean, great location - we give it all five stars and are recommending it to friends. Thank you for a great stay.
My friend and I left our husbands at home and traveled to the Big Island. We did a lot of research on places to stay before we left and chose this rental. No disappointment here!! It was an awesome location for our purposes, the caretakers were wonderful and very accommodating with lots of suggestions for what to see and what not to. We loved the fresh fruit - and the pie!! We spent much time driving to various sights and hiking each day. Our lunches/sandwiches were easy to pick up at the bakery in Naalehu as we headed out. The house was clean and had absolutely everything we needed and more! If we ever get back to the Big Island we will definitely consider returning to this rental. Thank you for allowing us to use your "home" for our week's vacation.
This was a nice house for the money. It was exactly what we expected it to be. We were traveling with our teenage kids, so everyone getting their own bedroom sure beat out a hotel. Having a kitchen to prepare our own food and a washer and dryer to do our own laundry was a plus. We stayed for almost two weeks and were comfortable the entire time. It is located in a quiet community on the southern end of the island which made for a relaxing stay. It is in a good location to access both Hilo and Kona. The house does not have internet or cable tv, so have a data plan for your electronics and use the Redbox kiosk at the local grocery store to rent movies (there is a tv and DVD player). The caretakers who live next door were wonderful. They brought us fresh fruit and flowers from their garden. I can tell you, you have never tasted a real banana until you have one fresh from the garden in Hawaii. Enjoy your stay!
My boyfriend found this rental because he had been checking out Discovery Harbour for a while and then recently checked out the town of Naalehu and wanted stay to feel out the area to see what it was like to live there. Well it felt like home for both of us. The house was great, it was clean, it was accommodating, it had everything you needed. If you didn't have something, then you could ask the caretakers, Sheri and Mac. They were wonderful and awesome. They were so full of Aloha, it convinced us even more that we loved the area. The house does not have cable or tv but that was nice and didn't matter because Sheri and Mac had some DVD movies, they had some fresh fruit and avacados from thier trees in their yard and shared their knowledge of the area with us. They were so Da Kine and full of Aloha that we even might be neighbors someday. The town of Naalehu was so friendly and they have the farmer's market on Wednesday and Saturday, have a guy who sells Meat at the Shaka's Restaurant and Bar's Parking Lot on Farmer's Market's Days. Live Music on the first Friday Night of the month at 2 different places. The weather was awesome, it was beautiful. We would stay at this rental again in a heartbeat, and defintely recommend this rental to anyone.
We had a wonderful stay at this vacation rental! Plenty of room for everyone, 2 queen sized beds, 2 twin beds, a futon, and I even saw a couple air matresses in the master bedrooms closet. The neighbors/caretakers are amazingly nice people! They loaded us up on fruit from their beautiful backyard. Already had laundry soap and dish soap available. Very clean and relaxing home. There is a market called "Malama Market" not too far up the road towards kona and to the left. They have a redbox and the prices aren't bad. Beautiful view; Palm Trees and Ocean. There is 4 chairs and a table on the Lanai, very nice for breakfast.
Would stay there again!
