Couldn’t have been better for us
We enjoyed our week-long stay at the historic William Gaskins House in New Bern, N.C. The house is ideally located within easy walking distance of the lovely downtown and offers excellent river views from the back porch. The house itself is very charming. It features original wood flooring, high ceilings and is decorated with many unique works of art. The house offers plenty of space and is comfortably furnished, with several areas that invite conversation and others that are perfect for curling up with a good book. The kitchen and living areas are open, which allows for a lot of family time. The bedrooms are large and beds are very comfortable. We used the dressing room that adjoins the master for our toddler who slept in his pack and play. The set up couldn’t have been better for us, as he was only a few steps away yet we still had our privacy. The kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked, which is always a pleasant surprise in a vacation rental. The kitchen is equipped with everything a cook needs. The rocking chairs on the wide front porch are perfect for enjoying morning coffee or an iced tea in the afternoon. The backyard is fenced and is a great place for children to play. We enjoyed walking out to the river each morning and were pleasantly surprised to find a large turtle passing through the lot behind the house one morning and two ducks sleeping in the grass another. The dishwasher stopped working during our stay but the owners worked quickly to address the problem and install a new one as soon as possible. The neighborhood is beautiful and one of the most enjoyable activities for us was strolling around looking at the grand old houses on our way to Union Point Park or downtown. New Bern is a beautiful old town with great views, beautiful architecture, wonderful restaurants, and great parks. We also enjoyed taking the drive to the beach to visit the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and Ft. Macon State Park. Our favorite activity during our vacation was taking a ferry to Shackleford Island to see the wild horses. We felt at home in the Gaskins house and look forward to returning in the future.
