Sterling House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 2-15)

LARGE, LUXURY CUSTOM HOME WITH HUGE DECK/LAWN WITH FANTASTIC MOUNTAIN AND FOREST VIEWS!! PERFECT FOR LARGE, FAMILY GATHERINGS. KID FRIENDLY! FISHERMAN'S DREAM HOME! Welcome! We invite you to stay in our wonderful custom-made post and beam home. Designed and constructed by master builder Gregory Corse, this architecturally stunning home will provide a comfortable and inspiring retreat for your fishing and wilderness adventures. The house was built using centuries old techniques from the German master builders. The 40' vaulted ceiling of the great room boasts incredible hand-hewn beam and joinery work, with a cascading wall of windows overlooking rich green forests and stunning glacial capped mountains.

You will have plenty of room for your large group as the house is a duplex (3 stories), giving you TWO FULL KITCHENS and LIVING ROOM areas.

The Chalet is the main and upper floors, and the Hide-A-Way is the lower, daylight (walk out) basement). The Chalet has 3 bedrooms with 2 full baths. The Hide-A-Way has 2 bedrooms with 2/3 bath (shower/no tub).

The Hide-A-Way boasts an impressive custom made rock wall fireplace built over 40 years ago by the original property homesteader and well known artist and wood turner, Donald 'Rip' Skuse.

Situated on 9 acres of beautifully forested land, this house is just a THREE-MINUTE drive or 15-minute walk from the world famous Kenai River at Morgan's Landing State Park headquarters where you can fish from the bank. Located in Sterling on the Kenai Peninsula, Soldotna (shops, dining, laundry, movies, etc) is just a 15-minute drive away. Day trips to Homer or Seward for saltwater fishing, glacier fjord tours, art/crafts/artifacts shopping and amazing seafood dining are just 1.5 hours away. Whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking and canoeing are all within 20 to 45 minutes away.

From the Chalet enjoy midnight sun BBQs on the large deck after a hard day's fishing. You can relax here with friends while watching eagles, hawks, and loons soar in the valley below. Early morning coffee on the deck may also offer views of moose as they wander across the property.

Guests really enjoy the large lawn area which has a lovely fire pit and sitting area. Imagine relaxing by the fire, enjoying the setting sun and endless views of the Kenai National Widlife Refuge and distant Chugach National Forest mountain range.

Each unit is well appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable furnishings, and quality bedding/towels, and outdoor BBQ. Guests have access to the storage shed with 2 adult mountain bikes and a variety of children's bikes. There are also a variety of fishing poles, nets and other items which can be utilized. You will have access to freezer space for your fish catch, but there is a strict NO FISH CLEANING policy on the property so as not to attract bears.

This property has been in my family since 1979. Having grown up in Alaska, I understand and appreciate what a unique experience The Great Land can offer and I hope to share that with you. My parents, Greg and Hannah Corse, ran a successful tourism business here for over 15 years, and my husband I took over the property in 2011. The Chalet is our personal vacation home, and we look forward to coming home each summer from our work overseas. Since this is our personal home, you'll find everything you need.

Alaska is a wonderland of natural beauty and amazing resources, which our family has spent generations protecting through conservation efforts. We welcome you to our home where you too can become a 'Sourdough' and share in this unique experience. The home is available year round. Winter travelers will be rewarded with an incredible show of colorful northern lights and millions of stars in the dark Arctic night. Nearby winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and hot beverage drinking! Summer guests will be rewarded with midnight sun, vast and expansive views, solitude, wildlife, and world-class salmon and halibut fishing. COME EXPERIENCE YOUR ALASKAN DREAM VACATION!

About Juniper Neill

Raised in Alaska...this property was our family homestead. We lived a subsistance lifestyle here...which I didn't fully appreciate until I was grown up! Now I live and work overseas, but Alaska, and this property, will always be our home. I work in international conservation, and growing up in Alaska gave me a real appreciation for protecting our planet's most amazing natural places...this area being one of them!

Juniper Neill purchased this house in 1979

Why Juniper Neill chose Sterling

We chose to take over the family property in 2011 as we just couldn't imagine it not being part of our lives. I hope my children will experience some of what I did growing up. We look forward to coming home every year from our adventures in Africa and Asia.

What makes this house unique

We love to BBQ on the large back deck, overlooking the forest and distant mountain range. Nothing but trees for hundreds of miles! What a view! It's a great way to relax and just reconnect with your family in a quiet and peaceful place.

My 2nd Time Here

  • 5 of 5

As before, my stay was relaxing, comfortable and exciting! (the fishing was awesome)

The hosts have thought of every detail and amenity. I really felt welcome and at home.

True Alaska style hospitality and the beauty and grandeur to go with it. I'll be back!

Great experience

We've been to Alaska as a group a couple of times and this was, by far, the place we have stayed. Plenty of room for all 6 of us, with a great common area as well. The decks and view were really the icing on the cake! We look forward to coming back very soon!

This place was so beautiful! It was immaculate. The woodwork is absolutely incredible! The entire chalet is perfection from the views and the diverse artwork. I wish I knew the stories behind each piece. Juniper's attention to detail is evident in the entire accommodations. For example, the kitchen is fully stocked with anything you might need. The fluffy bath towels were plush and absorbent. There are games and videos for the entire family. Also, she has fishing gear to use. Even bicycles and riding toys for all, including the littlest family members. There is a washer and dryer so you don't have to haul dirty clothes back home. In addition, there are first aid supplies and bug spray available. Our only regret is that we were not able to enjoy the chalet more due to our busy schedule. If you can, plan on some down time to fully take in this phenomenal place. Thanks for a wonderful memory. It will be hard to top this trip!

Owner's Response: Thank you Barry and Phyllis! So happy you had such a great time in Alaska and that our house could add to your enjoyment. You mentioned the artwork and wishing you knew where it was from....many of the paintings are from my grandmother, Ida Wilcher, who was a modern dancer with the Humphry-Weidman Company in NYC and then became a painter after she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Those painting are full of her positive energy and love of life. The black and white photos are from William Webb and Ansel Adams, both friends of my grandfather, Denny Wilcher, who was a life-long conservationist. The number of Native Alaskan scrimshaw is from the coastal arctic village of Shishmaref, where I visited in 2003 when I worked on climate change issues for NOAA. The Bob Wallin prints in the hallway are special as he is a well-known Alaskan artist. Then of course I have a number of things like the beaded Massai warrior clubs from Tanzania, Yoruba woman with child carving from Nigeria, woodsmen carvings from Ukraine, decorative bowls from Kenya, large framed temple rubbing from Cambodia, and masks and batik fish print from Indonesia. Much of the interesting furniture is from Thailand, Tibet and Tanzania (no, I don't only buy furniture from "T" countries!). The snowshoes in the entryway are quite old, and were my father's that he used back in the 70s. The Indian Cradle Board in the Master bedroom is from a famous Piute woman named Minnie Mike (from the Mono Lake area of California), it was made in 1969 for me when I was born. The large mask on the wall above the stairs is very special, and was given to my grandfather by the Gwich'in people to thank him for his work to protect their land. Many people have asked me about all these things so I hope this helps round out the story of the house!

Super-Duper Stay!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 13 stayed here as a central location for the Kenai week of our vacation. What a beautiful place and location. The view off the back deck is gorgeous. We had a campfire most evenings to unwind from the day. Very user-friendly, helpful, comfortable... we would certainly stay here again! We had a fantastic time.

Absolute perfection!!!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 10 (ranging in age 5 thru 80) rented both the chalet & hideaway for a few days. I have not one negative thing to say! This house is absolutely beautiful. There's beautiful artwork everywhere but not like a museum where you're afraid to touch anything or move too quickly---it's so warm and cozy!!! We honestly could have just stayed at the home all day, everyday! We enjoyed the beautiful views from the house, rooms and deck. All the beds were very comfy and warm! The only negative I can think of is that we didn't have time to enjoy the fire pit. We were so busy fishing at the nearby Morgan's landing and running around between homer and kenai and soldotna. This is the perfect area to make home base if you plan to play between homer and seward and kenai areas. Juniper (the homeowner) is great with communication and is sooo personable. Wish I could give you a hug juniper---to say thank you for sharing your beautiful home!!! Shae (the home's caretaker) was so NICE and helpful. We knew that if we needed any assistance or had questions, she'd be easily contacted and was easy to find. We had no worries whatsoever! LOVE LOVE LOVE this home and it will be my first choice when we come back!!! You have to book early though, it books up quick!!!!

Thank you for such a great idea! All the best, Juniper

Fantastic vacation home!

I really can hardly think of enough nice things to say about this property. Everything was perfect -- no negatives. Great communication from the owner. Very spacious and comfortable. We've never stayed in such a clean, nicely maintained and gorgeous cabin. It actually felt like we were staying in the home of good friends rather than a vacation rental. The kitchen was stocked with every utensil and appliance you would ever need. Our young children were delighted to find lots of toys and books. The satellite TV and internet worked flawlessly, which is not often the case in a vacation cabin. The location is central to explore all of the Kenai Peninsula. Our family of five (twin 7-year-olds and 11-year-old) were so comfortable and happy with our stay that we hated to leave. This would be a great pace for family reunion or larger group. Hopefully we will be back some day. I highly recommend this property!
