Photos and Description of the Sterling vacation house rental
House, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 2-14)

Welcome! We invite you to our custom made post and beam home. Designed and constructed by master builder Gregory Corse, this architecturally stunning home will provide a comfortable and inspiring retreat from your fishing and wilderness adventures. The Chalet was built using centuries old techniques from the German master builders. The 40' vaulted ceiling of the great room boasts incredible hand-hewn beam and joinery work, with a cascading wall of windows overlooking rich green forests and stunning glacial capped mountains.

The house is divided into TWO rentals, the Chalet (upper) and Hide-A-Way (lower), each one with full kitchen and living area. The Chalet has 3 bedrooms with 2 full baths. The Hide-A-Way has 2 bedrooms with 2/3 bath (shower/no tub). Large groups will want to rent the entire house for absolute comfort at a reduced rate. Smaller groups can rent either space and are assured of privacy, as each unit has a separate entrance and is well insulated between floors. The Hide-A-Way boasts an impressive custom made rock wall fireplace built over 40 years ago by the original property homesteader and well known artist and wood turner, Donald 'Rip' Skuse.

Situated on 9 acres of beautifully forested land, this house is just a THREE-MINUTE drive or 15-minute walk from the world famous Kenai River at Morgan's Landing State Park headquarters where you can fish from the bank. Located in Sterling on the Kenai Peninsula, Soldotna (shops, dining, laundry, movies, etc) is just a 15-minute drive away. Day trips to Homer or Seward for saltwater fishing, glacier fjord tours, art/crafts/artifacts shopping and amazing seafood dining are just 1.5 hours away. Whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking and canoeing are all within 20 to 45 minutes away.

From the Chalet enjoy midnight sun BBQs on the large deck after a hard day's fishing. You can relax here with friends while watching eagles, hawks, and loons soar in the valley below. Early morning coffee on the deck may also offer views of moose as they wander across the property. The Hide-A-Way also has a covered patio at ground level with partial views. Guests from both units can enjoy the outdoor firepit and sitting area for meeting new friends and sharing stories of your Alaskan adventures.

Each unit is well appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable furnishings, and quality bedding/towels, and outdoor BBQ. Guests have access to the storage shed with 2 adult mountain bikes and a variety of children's bikes. There are also a variety of fishing poles, nets and other items which can be utilized. Both the Chalet and Hide-A-Way have access to freezer space for your fish catch, but there is a strict NO FISH CLEANING policy on the property so as not to attract bears.

This property has been in my family since 1979. Having grown up in Alaska, I understand and appreciate what a unique experience The Great Land can offer and I hope to share that with you. My parents ran a successful tourism business here for over 15 years, and my husband I took over the property in 2011. The Chalet is our personal vacation home, and we look forward to coming home each summer from our work overseas. It is the only remaining tourism rental on the property; the other log cabins are now long-term rentals only. My young children especially love exploring the property, playing in the 'magic garden', feeding the chickens, and evening trips to the Kenai River to watch the fishermen reel in their catch.

Alaska is a wonderland of natural beauty and amazing resources, which our family has spent generations protecting through conservation efforts. We welcome you to our home where you too can become a 'Sourdough' and share in this unique experience. The home is available year round. Winter travelers will be rewarded with an incredible show of colorful northern lights and millions of stars in the dark Arctic night. Nearby winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and hot beverage drinking! Summer guests will be rewarded with midnight sun, vast and expansive views, solitude, wildlife, and world-class salmon and halibut fishing. WELCOME!!

About Juniper Neill

Raised in Alaska...this property was our family homestead. We lived a subsistance lifestyle here...which I didn't fully appreciate until I was grown up! Now I live and work overseas, but Alaska, and this property, will always be our home. I work in international conservation, and growing up in Alaska gave me a real appreciation for protecting our planet's most amazing natural places...this area being one of them!

Juniper Neill purchased this house in 1979
Why Juniper Neill chose Sterling

We chose to take over the family property as we just couldn't imagine it not being part of our lives. I hope my children will experience some of what I did growing up. We look forward to coming home every year from our adventures in Africa and Asia.

What makes this house unique

We love to BBQ on the large back deck, overlooking the forest and distant mountain range. Nothing but trees for hundreds of miles! What a view! It's a great way to relax and just reconnect with your family in a quiet and peaceful place.

Alaska Mountainview Cabins

Our two week stay at the Alaska Mountainview Cabins was outstanding. When we first arrived, I was blown away by the outstanding view of the Kenai Mountains just off the deck and we could see the view for the greatroom as well! As my adult daughter indicated in an earlier review, there were 5 adults and 1 child and there was plenty of space for everyone and all of our stuff! It was totally comfortable. The location in Sterling is excellent for visiting nearby Soldatna as well as Homer (for halibut fishing which was awesome!) and Seward for a wildlife cruise....we would recommend a smaller boat in Seward than what we joined (too many people, as in probably 100! otherwise, it was interesting). The house has all the necessary amenities and is very up to date. As I indicated earlier, we were extremely comfortable and I would recommend this vacation rental to anyone who is interested in really exploring the Kenai Peninsula! Saw lots of moose in the neighorhood right next to the road as we drove to and from Soldatna for supplies at Fred Meyer! All in all it was a great place to visit and we highly recommend this venue!

The Perfect Alaska Destination

I've visited Alaska several times throughout the years and this property is without a doubt the best I've ever stayed at. The Sterling area is a great home-base in which to enjoy the many adventures of the Kenai Peninsula. Our goal this trip was to enjoy world class Trout fishing on the upper and middle Kenai River; we were not disappointed! We had a great fishing trip and found this home's location in Sterling to allow easy access to the most visited areas of the river.
The house itself is amazing! The craftsmanship, attention to detail, and amazing view will make it very difficult to leave! The owner was extremely responsive from reservation to check out and made renting this vacation property a true pleasure.
I highly recommend visiting this home and the amazing Kenai Peninsula.

Owner's Response: Hi Jim~ Thanks so much for the great review! We are really happy you were so successful on the river...and thanks for letting people know that our tourism season (and great fishing) extends into September! See you again! Juniper

This cabin is too nice...we enjoyed our stay and everything was made easy with the perfect amount of space, all the amenities, etc...
The cabin in itself is above average, it is a quiet area, kitchen is stocked with all utensils, nice backyard area with fire pit. It's just everything you need and expect...a nice clean cabin, relaxing, plenty of space inside and out, private, and priced right.
We'll be back next year...
P.S. - I love how the dirty towels just disappear while we are gone during the day...

Everything You Need!

From the moment I contacted Juniper about availability through our stay at this cabin, everything was top notch. We rented both the main home and the hideaway. Both were very well equipped and incredibly comfortable. Juniper's descriptions were accurate. The views from the deck are amazing. It was difficult to leave the cabin and do our many planned activities. Just staying at this place was vacation!

I've rented many VRBO places, this was by far the most thoughtful owner. There was nothing lacking and obvious effort was made to make renters feel at home. When possible, check in time was very accommodating. On site manager was also readily available and helpful.

The only caution I would mention is the well water. Juniper discussed this in her details. We are from Alaska and familiar with well water. We could even drink from the faucet. My siblings and their families from Houston, TX, were not accustomed to the strong smell. This would not keep me from renting again! Wonderful time, thank you!

Owner's Response: Dear Chi,
I'm so glad you and your family had such a wonderful time at our house. Thank you for staying with us and we hope to see you again, in winter OR summer! You are very welcome!!! All the best, Juniper
