Koyuan is an accommodation facility that enables you to charter and stay at a whole block of “machiya,” Kyoto’s traditional townhouse. It is a place where you can experience Japanese culture and art created with obsession of the owner who is a painter in Kyoto.
It is the nearest machiya accommodation facility to the center area of Gion in Kyoto and is located in an alley connected to popular Gion Hanamikoji where maikos and geikos can be often seen. Popular sightseeing spots, Yasaka Shrine, Kodaiji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera are also very conveniently accessible on foot.
This house obtains official hotel/inn business license and complies with the Building Standard Law and the Fire Services Act in Japan. You may securely stay in this house while enjoying your trip in Kyoto.
Popular sightseeing spots around the house;
Kiyomizu Tample - 15 minutes on foot
Yasaka Shrine - 5 minutes on foot
Gion Hanamikoji Street - 5 minutes on foot
Gion Corner - 3 minutes on foot
We absolutely enjoyed staying in this beautifully refurbished traditional townhouse. It was well appointed and faultless in terms of cleanliness and convenience to interesting sights, restaurants and shopping. The bathrooms had an amazing fresh wood smell and spectacularly high-tech toilets and bathtubs. The futons on the floor, with buckwheat pillows, were quite comfortable and the heat worked very well. The house was exactly the same as many of the ones we saw while roaming the neighborhood in Gion and I would have been saying "I wonder what it looks like inside" or "I wonder what it would be like to live in one." The ONLY downside to the place is the street noise, which is absolutely no fault of the management and really nothing that can be helped, but if sensitive to outside noise while sleeping one might want to take this into consideration. Although the streets in this section of Gion are narrow cars, trucks and mopeds jostle around tourists and locals, literally day and all night. In fact on Saturday the police had cordoned off one side of the street with traffic cones for pedestrians to walk within - which was literally inches from the door of the machiya. I will mark that I will recommend this vacation rental to a friend because it really was so great, but with the caveat that they wear earplugs or can sleep through anything. It is truly a beautiful townhouse that I'm happy I had the chance to experience but for me, I think next time I'll look for someplace a little quieter.
The place was kept very clean and well maintained. It was also a mere 3mins walk to Hanami-Koji thus very convenient. One star deducted however for the noise. Cars continued to go pass the street outside even way pass midnight. Also since the walls are not sound proof, we can hear people walking by and their conversations. Not suitable for light sleepers and small babies.
