Relax and Enjoy: Staniel Cay and my home Shell has been an amazing get away for my family. You will enjoy the beach water and the people of Staniel Cay. My children grew up going there and now as adults use it every chance they get. There are so many things to do and explore. It is my hope that the guests leave with the same feeling about Shell that my family has.
Garden: There is a garden as you pull up to the house. Feel free to help your self to fresh herbs, limes, key lime, spicy bird peppers Papaya, avocado, or cut some fresh flowers for the house. Please don't pick the orchids.
Each year, for the past 12+ years we have gone to the Bahamas, going to a different Out-Island for a few days and then returning to our favorite, Staniel Cay, in the Exuma chain for a few days. We have not found anything to compare with Staniel Cay. To find Shell available to rent was more than we could ever hope for on this highly demanded cresent bay with white sugar, Windex-blue water, and perfect beach just steps from your door. On this secluded bay, Shell is your own personal tropical compound which is remote yet safe. When we were not cooking on the beach or in the BBQ, we took our golf cart to one of the several local restaurants to meet up with the locals we have become friends with over the years. There is so much to do in the Exumas - snorkeling, diving, fishing, shelling, eating, hiking, relaxing etc. Everything is here. Shell has all the modern conveniences of home, although you probably won't turn on the flat screen TV other than to get a weather update each morning. Since the owners are there often, the pantry is well-stocked, just in case you need a jar of spaghetti sauce before the supply boat comes in (borrow a jar, replace a jar). The locals are wonderful people. It was a joy sharing in their community party the week we were there. This is a remote island chain, to become one with nature and all it has to offer. If you are looking for Blockbuster and Dominos Pizza, this is not the place for you. If you want to visit a tiny village island atmosphere, get to Staniel Cay and stay at Shell. While there are a few places to stay on Staniel Cay, we have never found anything to rent directly on this bay other than Shell. We were there in October. We loved being in some thunderstorms for a couple of days. We sat on the screened porch and watched the waves roll in. Be sure to feed the nurse sharks, the swimming pigs, and the iguanas on the surrounding islands. You'll have several choices of boat rentals, captains for fishing and other private charter events, and golf cart rental to get around the 2-mile-long island. Shell is the perfect home away from home - not your usual rental vacation property. From the moment you pull into the sugary white sand driveway and wind yourself around the fruit and herb garden before you get to the front door, you will never want to leave. Never. We can hardly wait to return. We will someday call Staniel Cay our second home.
Wake up to sunrise over the sea and walk on your semi private powder sand beach. No photo can describe the clear-as-a-bell aqua water right out SHELL's door. One of the best locations on Staniel.
The house has been clean, climate controlled and comfortable all three times I've stayed there. Furnishings are sturdy with durable fabric. SHELL's kitchen is especially well equipped, and the gas grill is a good addition. Most of our indoor time was spent on the spacious eat-in screen porch which is perfect for watching the moonrise. The abundance of stars will blow your mind...the Milky Way looks like a blanket and shooting stars burst through the sky.
Staniel Cay is a small village with a regular population of local folk and ex-pats. During the season, tourists and boaters join the scene and quickly become friends. The couple of small local restaurants are perfect stops for good Bahamian food and bar-squatting at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club can easily become a daily event.
Isles General Store and the Blue Store, though small, have most everything you need and fresh fish, conch and lobster can usually be found at the town dock.
Guides are available for all types of fishing, diving, snorkeling and day trips to other islands. I would recommend a golf cart..best to rent ahead. Watch the "mail boat" come in (usually) early Wednesday morning at the town dock to see commerce working in the islands. This boat brings in everything from potatoes to building supplies to people.
Having owned a small resort on a nearby cay for some years, the one thing I discovered that made a vacation to the Exumas successful, or not, was to know what you are coming to. If you're looking for fancy restaurants, shopping, spas or casinos, Staniel is not a good match for you. If you want unspoiled nature, friendly people and the privilege of experiencing "the islands" much as they've always been, you'll love this extraordinary cay. Lay back and enjoy the slower pace, the gentle nature of the locals and the hospitality of SHELL.
