Fun Week in Southport

We rented this house with three families, including four children, ages 2-8. The house itself is great as it is set up in four separate apartments, so we could be together, but still have our own space. The kids loved the maze-like atmosphere of the house. The yard is great for sitting out and playing yard games. However, when we arrived, we were very disappointed to see that the house is on a very busy road which was a concern with the young kids. The road is in between the house and the cove so even though the view is great, the fast-moving cars are noisy and disrupt the view. The traffic noise was also an issue at night with the windows open.
Southport is a fantastic place to visit and we loved spending every day at Hendrick's Head Beach and visiting Boothbay and the Botanical Gardens. I recommend this location for the unique house set up and attentive owner, just be prepared to hear the cars!

Owner's Response: In the 12 years that we have been renting , no one has raised the issues that appear in this review. The VRBO website contains an aerial view of the location that clearly shows the relative proximity of the house, the road, and the cove. Therefore this should not have been a surprise. Additional photos on the website show the large garden area that is bounded on the road side by a fence, thus providing a safe and expansive playing area which has always been utilized by renters and their children, as has also been acknowledged in the review.
The concern about traffic and associated noise is a surprise. Southport Island ( 6 mi by 2 mi ) is a rural coastal community whose population grows in the summer time as all Maine coastal communities do. This is a residential community with one general store, a couple of Inns, a couple of restaurants, no entertainment centers, a single ring road, and a traffic pattern that ebbs and flows through the course of the day with very little activity after 5 pm. Additionally, the bridge that connects the Island to the mainland, opens for boats on the half hour, which results in car waiting lines, which when released would give the uninitiated the impression that wow ! there is a lot of traffic on Southport....this is not the case. In summary, Southport is not in the back of beyond, remote and inactive. Neither is it I-95. It is simply an area that takes on a new life in the summer, active and alive, and people still keep their windows open at night.
