We are Jane and Inder Cheema. Retired from ExxonMobil in 2000, and settled into property purchased in 1978, also on Southport, which served as our home base while working mostly overseas. We both immigrated to the US, Jane from Canada, and Inder from Kashmir, India, so Southport is special to us...it was our anchor during the many years of living overseas, and is now a summer base for children and grandchildren, and our year round home.
Inder or Jane Cheema purchased this house in 2000
Close to our home on Southport; sounded like a good retirement project, which it was and continues to be.
Away from the hustle and bustle of Boothbay Harbor, but close enough for convenient access if and when desired. Dock at property provides safe boating within protected Decker's cove, but also convenient access to a variety of adjoining interior and open ocean waterways.
From booking coveside house to our actual stay, the experience was absolutely perfect! Inder went above and beyond to meet the needs of our family.
Our family of 9 spent a week at coveside house this summer.
The house with all of its separate living spaces made it perfect for having quiet time with our individaul family. Yet the open/connected layout made whole group family time a bonus!
Our kids loved playing on the kayaks in decker cove and the front yard was a favorite spot for whiffle ball games. We loved having Robinsons Wharf across the street. Great place for happy hours and getting lobsters straight off the boats. Cooking lobster dinner in the perfectly equipped kitchens was a huge treat and made so easy with all of the kitchen space.
We plan on making a family vacation at coveside house a tradition. Great house in a great location with all the amenities needed to make a memorable vacation.
The owner/host was terrific to work with -- all requests and questions were answered quickly and completely. The accommodations were exceptional. Our entire family agreed that our week in Maine was the best vacation of our lives to date. We highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a great place to relax in first class quarters.
This was my first ever attempt at renting anything on line and it turned out to be a great experience. The pictures were accurate and there were no surprises. The home was perfect for our family of 5 sons, 3 daughter-in-laws and 5 grand children. The largest area was big enough for all of us to gather and the individual living areas made it possible for the married sons and their families to have their own space when needed The porch and lawn space was perfect for picnic dinners, botchi, football, and just chasing the younger ones around. The availability of the kayaks and dingy were a hit - even in the drizzle everyone had a time to paddle around. The home and all it's areas were spotless. Linens were plentiful, and we found that the kitchen had everything we needed.
Boothbay was charming and we found public conservation land for family hikes / walks that everyone enjoyed. Osprey and a seal were spotted and the rocky coast with the inlets are always scenic. The roads were hilly with virtually no shoulders so I would not recommend planning on biking in the immediate area with younger ones.
The owner was friendly and receptive to my many inquires - it felt as if I was talking to my neighbor, or a friend. He was extremely helpful and was quickly available to answer our questions when we first arrived. We all felt welcomed and that his home was ours during our time there.
This was our first attempt at gathering the whole grown family under one roof and everyone agreed it was a success.
We rented this house with three families, including four children, ages 2-8. The house itself is great as it is set up in four separate apartments, so we could be together, but still have our own space. The kids loved the maze-like atmosphere of the house. The yard is great for sitting out and playing yard games. However, when we arrived, we were very disappointed to see that the house is on a very busy road which was a concern with the young kids. The road is in between the house and the cove so even though the view is great, the fast-moving cars are noisy and disrupt the view. The traffic noise was also an issue at night with the windows open.
Southport is a fantastic place to visit and we loved spending every day at Hendrick's Head Beach and visiting Boothbay and the Botanical Gardens. I recommend this location for the unique house set up and attentive owner, just be prepared to hear the cars!
We had four adults in our party and stayed for a week. The property was spacious, clean, well furnished, modern and comfy. It was truly home away from home. The yard is incredibly beautiful and the water view is awesome. There is a large parking area, and great gas grills in the picnic area. The location was excellent--easy access to restaurants and shopping. We had a great time exploring the area by bike and car. The house has easy internet access. This is an excellent rental central to everything and quiet too. I highly recommend it!
We have stayed at this home for two seasons and will return. It is an excellent place to rest and relax, and close to many wonderful sights and venues to enjoy. The access to wifi, TV enable guests to stay connected and enjoy their favorite entertainments. It is clean and comfortable. The owners Inder and Jane are a delight to know and personally interact with their guests making you welcome from the beginning to the end of your stay. We give it the highest recommendation possible in every way. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we have.
Southport is an island about 6 miles long and 2 miles across at its widest. Access is by means of a swing bridge which opens on the half hour for boat traffic. The serenity of this island setting is augmented by nearby Booth bay Harbor and its varied marine activities, restaurants, art galleries, shops, antique stores, live theater, movie theater, aquarium ,etc. For families with children the nearby beach at Hendricks Head is fun and picturesque.Biking enthusiasts have various possibilities on and of the island. Small boats, kayaks, and canoes can tie-up at our dock from where access to the open ocean and surrounding islands and waterways/coves is feasible and safe. There is much to be explored on the island...a quaint seaside church, the landing at Newagen and its bold ocean views, hiking trails, a historical museum, a town library, and a couple of picturesque harbors. Both formal and informal dining is within walking distance of the home.
Golf: A challenging and well maintained 18 hole golf course is within a 10 min. drive; includes golf school/academy .
