Guestbook comments from the owner
We three siblings from Chicago, Honolulu, and Washington DC had a great stay here. Perfect place for us - thank you. We enjoyed The Tempest and Richard III most of all, but also enjoyed Water by the Spoonful, Two Gents, and Coconuts.

Be sure to take the backstage tour and all the preface and noon lectures on offer. Quite worthwhile!

Great dinner at Smithfields and two great lunches, Larks and Amuse. Excellent OR pinot noir! (many places)

Houston's Art Gallery/Framing is the best gallery in town and nice to see all the bookstores.

Hooray for Tuesday Growers' Market!

VERY CONVENIENT FOR THE SHAKESPEARE EXPERIENCE

  • 4 of 5
All the good: the house is well maintained and has plenty of sleeping room for a large family or a group of friends. The common areas - living room, kitchen, deck - are spacious and nice for gatherings. The house is wonderfully located just a few blocks from the theaters and within easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants Ashland has to offer. There are two dedicated parking spaces which is really invaluable. The owners are incredibly nice, easy to get ahold of, and provide tons of great information about the house and the town, as well as treats upon arrival.

There are just a couple of minor reasons I didn't give the house five stars. First, for a house that sleeps 9, there is really not enough bathroom space. There is only one small stand-up shower in the downstairs bathroom. The upstairs bathroom just has a bathtub under a very low sloping ceiling. It worked out OK, we just had to plan ahead and take turns. The upstairs bedroom ceilings are low and sloping too, so some of us bumped our heads multiple times. Also, the person who slept in the downstairs bedroom had a horrible experience because the mattress was so saggy. It really needs to be replaced.

Overall, though, this is a great option if you are going to see the plays and want to be in walking distance to everything.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for staying with us and providing such thorough feedback. The house was built in 1907 and is on the historic registry; we've looked into expanding the bathroom space but, unfortunately, there is no way to do it. We've tried to make up for the limited bathroom space by providing a rain shower head, fluffy towels, crystal sconces and a great soaking tub experience. We also hope our photos are very accurate and show the bathrooms as they actually are so guests know exactly what they are booking.
And so sorry about your experience with the downstairs bed. We think something must have happened because the bed went from perfect to broken in a very short time. We've replace the mattresses and the bed is totally new now. So sorry I didn't know during your stay as we would have changed the mattress immediately.
We always encourage our guests to tell us about any issues while they are still there, don't wait!, because we'll do everything in our power to correct any issues immediately.
Thanks again for staying with us. Hope you'll return to enjoy the new bed!
Warmly,
Alla

PERFECT HOUSE TO EXPERIENCE ASHLAND

  • 5 of 5
This house is beautifully decorated, very well-stocked, and in the ideal location! Less than two blocks from the main drag, this house is in the perfect spot to easily walk to various restaurants, cafes, stores, grocery markets, parks and shows.

It is in a very cute neighborhood on a quiet street and is great for bringing families and pets along. The house is extremely clean and perfectly maintained, with up-to-date appliances such as a coffee maker, dishwasher, tea kettle, even a waffle maker! There are three air conditioning units that keep the house nice and cool during the hot days as well as a heater for the winter time. The beds are really comfortable and the rooms offer privacy.

The back deck is awesome for drinks and warm nights with friends or family! My favorite part of the house is the upstairs bathroom. Its a quaint little room with very cute chandelier lights that dim for a relaxing soak in the beautiful tub!! Definitely a must for any vacation!

Thank you so much for allowing me to stay in your wonderful home, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Ashland!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for staying in our Ashland home. Glad you took the time to enjoy the claw-foot bathtub upstairs. That is one of my favorite parts of the house too, very relaxing!
Hope you'll be back to stay again soon and thank you again.

GREAT LOCATION!

  • 3 of 5
You can't beat the location. Half a block to downtown and about 4 blocks from the theaters. Kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, utensils, etc. nice open floor plan downstairs and convenient parking. Very clean and the beds were comfortable enough. But- advertised as air conditioned but has one wall AC upstairs that does not reach downstairs bedroom or even the upstairs bedrooms very effectively. On a hot Ashland day, watch out! There is one ceiling fan in the living room. Also, there are only overhead lights downstairs which does not create a very pleasant atmosphere. Finally, the owners need to put black out curtains in the upstairs bedrooms- we used towels to block out the light.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for staying with us. So sorry you were our first guests since we've owned the house to stay during hot weather. Thanks to your feedback we've added an air conditioner to the down stairs bedroom AND a third one in the living room. We also added fans to the two upstairs bedrooms and dining room. We just stay in the home in 100 degree weather in July and it was very comfortable.
We also took your advice and added additional dark curtains to the bedrooms upstairs and you're right, it help sleep in!
We are always so grateful for feedback from our guests as we do everything in our power to constantly improve the home for a perfect 5-star guest experience.
Hope you'll come back and stay with us again next time you're in Ashland!
Warmly,
Alla

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!

  • 5 of 5
We could not have planned a better house to rent for our girls weekend! From the very first inquiry, the owners made sure that all of our needs were met in a timely and seamless manner. once we arrived, this beautifully remodeled charmer had everything we needed, while providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. And if that's not enough, the location was perfect for daily outings to shop, eat, and enjoy cocktails! The girls and I can't wait for our next trip!

We really enjoy Ashland every year but this was the first year we stayed right down-town and it made all the difference! We walked to dinner, drinks, and shopping. Smithfield's was right next door and I loved the duck fat fried potato cake at brunch!

The Hargadine House had everything we needed for the meals we didn't go out for, the kitchen is very nice! There are so many windows that the house always felt warm and inviting. Cozy Beds and great furnishings. The cuteness factor was evident as this is a historical home and has those angled ceilings and tucked away closets. Thanks for the Champagne and Chocolates, it made our weekend extra special!! We will book for next year.
