Opatija - Kvarner Bay – Croatia: General information for your holiday in Opatija. Opatija, swimming and climatic spa at the foot of the Ucka on the coast of Istria in the Bay of Rijeka, 13 km southwest of Rijeka; 9073 residents. Opatija, often known as the 'Adriatic Nice', is one of the best-known tourism locations in Croatia and the city with the longest tradition of tourism on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea. In 1844, the merchant Higinio Scarpa set up the 'Villa Angiolina' with stunning green areas and a wonderful park, which was visited by famous guests - including the Croatian Banus Josip Jelacic and the Austrian empress Maria Anna. This contributed to making Opatija the most popular destination of the residents of Rijeka and after this, Italians and Austrians. Opatija was the first place on the Adriatic Sea to implement tourism statistics in 1883. Directly after the construction of the hotel 'Opatija', the city was famous as a sophisticated summer resort.
Riviera of contrast & attractions - At the place where the sea goes farthest into the heart of Europe you will find the mountain of Ucka (1401 m) with 8 low-touristic cities that add with their attractions. The house was built at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century & is still in harmony with nature. Its parks, the illuminated coastal promenade (12 km long), the spas & fountains illustrate the basic conditions for villas & hotels, in which up to 6000 tourists can find accommodations. In addition to all of the advantages of a wonderful, Mediterranean climate, Opatija, which is in blooming vegetation, has a calming & relaxing climate, which is recommended for the treatment of heart attacks & other modern problems. Parks, sand paths & promenade along the sea (12 km), hotels with medical programs, 11 indoor pools, fitness centre, tennis.
Golf: constructed mainly during the period of the rise of tourism. They are surrounded with gardens. While most of them lack any value of a monument, as a whole they have it. Among these structures, those constructed in architectural features characteristic of a luxurious seaside resort at the turn of the century, have cultural-historical value especially prominent are those having neo-gothic and art nouveau features(between Lovan and Ika, along the coastline),and especially those designed by Seidl. The interlacing of architecture and nature, the romantic spirit and beauty are the main characteristics of the area which reaches its climax in Seil s edifices. Furthermore, a line of buildings on the western side of the main street in Ika has still preserved the character of a small fishermen settlement. Villas belonging to the type of luxurious villas are especially those on Punta Kolovi(from villa Mintz, Villa Papo to villa Madonna). The building with their architectural features are characteristic of the period they were built in, and with the manner of their combining with the landscape, they refine it and give a particular character.
Ski: Water sources. The Ucka keeps away the moisture and the clouds, which come from the west winds so that there is not a lot of precipitation in Opatija and more hours of sun than in Rijeka. The unusual connection between natural beauties, healing powers of air, sun and sea and the hospitality of the people in this region, are like a spell that always attracts.
