COZY LAKESIDE COTTAGE, NORTH SHORE, UPPER HAMLIN

Ludington Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Come enjoy our like NEW cottage nestled in the Manistee National Forest on the north shore, sunny side, of upper Hamlin Lake. The cottage was built in the 1940’s and has been totally renovated/updated inside and out. The furnishings, cabinets, appliances, linens, etc. were all new just four season's ago and it is still very neat and CLEAN. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes right from your deck or the shore. Fishing is great right off your private dock. Boating, swimming, skiing, hiking, wine tasting, and other fun activities are waiting just for you! There is also a lakeside firepit. Lake Michigan is minutes away for an afternoon picnic or swim. Golfing at some of the state's finest courses is close by. Or, for those who like more physical activity, bring your bikes for riding on the miles of trails in the National Forest. Ideal for couples who are looking for peace and quiet, bring a good book to read while sipping on your favorite beverage in a lounge chair by the lake! If you are looking for 2 cottages in close proximity, this cottage sleeps 3 adults comfortably and The Shadows on Hamlin Lake #1 sleeps 5! (See VRBO listing #236973.) Great for friends and/or families who like to vacation together but sleep/stay in different quarters. It all awaits you at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake #2. We live on the property, adjacent to this cottage which is approximately 20 feet from the waters edge. Because it is so close to the lake, we provide you a garden cart to take your belongs to the cottage, as you cannot drive to your back door. You may hear the water lapping on the break wall or on the attached boathouse wall. For some this may be a relaxing, soothing sound. For others…….

My family came here for summer vacations from Chicago starting in the 1930's. When I was born, we moved here. We lived here year round until I was 12 years old then we moved to GR, MI. So it went back to being a cottage for weekends and vacations. I moved back with my husband and daughter in 2000. Decided in 2009 that it was time to share this beautiful spot with others.

Deb Hulst purchased this cottage in 1930

My Grandparents chose this perfect location, out of the winter's cold winds, but basking in the summer breezes, set deep in the Manistee National Forest, very private, quiet and serene. So different from Chicago where they came from!

Ability to be part of nature, hummingbirds are fed on the property, pileated woodpeckers also dot the forest, the peace and quiet from the city hustle and bustle.

Perfect location for a long getaway weekend...

  • 5 of 5
The Shadows on Upper Hamlin provided us with the perfect home base for our recent getaway to the Ludington area. The cottage was beautiful and well-maintained inside and out, and our hosts Deb and Mark, were very hospitable and informative. Even though they live right behind the cottage, we never felt like there was anyone else there. In addition to the owner's house being right there on the property, they have another rental on the property. This was not a problem for us but if you are looking for total solitude, there is a potential to share the property and lake access/docks with several others.
The cottage is located 5+ miles down a dirt road, which during our visit, was rather washboarded, but my four-wheel drive vehicle handled it well. It is also worth mentioning that Ludington (city and State Park) are a considerable distance from the cottage as you must drive around the south side of Hamlin Lake and then east to Ludington. (25-40 minutes) Manistee is closer than Ludington at about 15-20 minutes away. All in all, this property was a joy to stay at and the owners were a pleasure to meet and work with. We would definitely stay here again, and would happily recommend this property to others visiting the area. Thank you Deb & Mark for the opportunity to stay with you!

Owner's Response: We appreciate your succinct and honest review of our property and cottage. You left no details undisclosed, i.e., we live on the property, the distance to either Ludington or Manistee, and the condition of the 5+ miles of dirt road! We have tried also to be very honest in our description of the property as we don't want there to be any surprises for our guests. The dirt road can be very smooth going depending upon the day, but it does deter the "drive by" uninvited visitors making the property more secluded and quiet. We try to give our guests their privacy yet be available, a sometimes hard job to balance, but always a pleasure when we are able to help. Once again, we appreciate your honesty and are glad that the property provided for your needs.

Love love love!

I do not think there is any way that Mark and Deb could have been more hospitable. As others have mentioned, the cleanliness of the cottage was even beyond our own house! We stayed for 3 nights with our 1 year old and had the most magical, memorable first family vacation. Our son even made a friend in "Kitty", the outdoor cat on the property. We spent our days in Ludington (about 25 minutes away) and evenings at the cottage grilling out and enjoying the view of the lake. For those of you traveling with a baby, Mark and Deb provided a pack and play for us (very clean and easy to use) and a highchair seat (also very clean)- both were already setup in the cottage when we arrived. The only drawback was the 25 minute drive into town, but totally worth it for the stay at this cottage- I've already recommended to several friends. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Owner's Response: It was so nice to meet you and your family. We love to have people here who really enjoy the lake and property. Next time, perhaps your little one will want to "enjoy" the lake as he will be a little bigger and older! So glad he could have his first vacation here at the cottage. What a wonderful memory maker and family tradition!

Quality time

  • 5 of 5
Deb & Mark, what wonderful folks!!! We have been coming to the Ludington area for 20+ years and this was one of the most wonderful experiences we have had in a long time. The cabin was perfect, clean, spacey, beautiful view of Lake Hamlin right from our balcony. Our grand daughters were able to experience thier first trip to Ludington and they loved the house and fishing off the dock. Oh speaking of the dock....we actually were able to catch fish and this hasn't happened at any of the other places we have stayed at. BONUS!!! I could go on forever with all the fun things, but I won't bore you. We didn't want to leave, but we know we will be back again. I will call soon to book our next trip.
Thank you for sharing the beauty of your home. Keith and Diana

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. Weather was a little strange, from AC on Monday, to furnace on Wednesday. We would love to have you stay again when you are able to enjoy the summer fun! After you left, people were finding morel mushrooms right at the end of the 2-track! So much to do, a week just isn't enough time!

Great place for anytime of the year!

  • 5 of 5
We wanted a weekend getaway during the peak season of the color change. This was a great place for that! The cottage very nice, comfortable, and had everything we needed. The sunset was just wonderful! We definitely want to go back during the summer so we can enjoy the beautiful lake.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you got to enjoy the colors! They are beautiful this year and the sunsets....they only get better, really awesom during the winter months. During the summer the dunes, lake, trails, biking, just long walks in the woods really helps to bring a family together and enjoy nature. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Great Weather & Fishing

Great Weather & Fishing
  • 5 of 5
Cottage was as clean as last year.. Mark & Deb were as friendly as ever. Except for 1 day of rain, the weather temperatures were very comfortable. We learned enough last year of fishing this part of the lake that allowed us to catch many more fish this time. The fillet of 155 bluegill and 2 keeper large mouth bass were either eaten or bagged for the freezer. The 5 mile stretch of gravel road improved during the week. A very relaxing week again. Owner's Response: We were happy to see you again and even happier that your fishing was so successful! Thanks for a sample of the catch, you made a believer out of us again! We haven't given away your secret spot, so when you come in May let's hope the fish will still be there! Looking forward to your next visit. No one has been able to "catch" up to you yet - you hold the record!

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time at Deb and Mark's cottage. The weather was great, there always seemed to be a breeze off the lake to keep us comfortable. The cottage was very nice and just the right size. Fishing off the dock was fun,we caught enough for dinner (but did catch and release). Nordhouse Dunes were beautiful, close enough to the cabin to ride your bike. We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds, sitting around the fire pit and lounging by the lake. The lake was a little cool at the cottage, so we took the boat over to the dunes to swim. Deb and Mark were very helpful and friendly. We highly recommend this rental

Owner's Response: June weather is unpredictable as it is most of the time in Michigan! But, glad you found water to swim in at a temperature you could tolerate. Now the water temp is almost 90 degrees! Lots to do here, boating, fishing, hiking, lighthouse climbing, beach walking, shopping in both Manistee and Ludington, Sleeping Bear Dunes, so much and so close! We are glad you had an enjoyable stay at the Shadows on Hamlin Lake.
