While only four miles from Stamford Village, our contemporary furnished cottage provides a quiet, reflective refuge from the distractions, demands & stress of everyday life.

Our cottage has an open sleeping loft, a spacious great rm., fully-equipped kitchenette, additional sleeping alcove downstairs, & full bath, all furnished in a warm, contemporary style. SunnyHill sleeps four adults comfortably; two additional guests may be accommodated on futons for a minimal additional per person, per diem charge. Parents: there's room near the beds for a playpen or porta-crib.

Guests can savor their morning coffee on the back porch while listening to the sounds of the forest; a gorgeous view of the Catskills' Historic Township Valley enhances sunset cocktails and a grilled dinner on the front deck. After dark, enjoy an evening of stargazing.

Many guests enjoy horseback riding (trail riding and lessons available.

Beyond the aforementioned downhill skiing opportunities nearby, should you decide to venture out of the peaceful solitude of SunnyHill, there's lots more to see & do only a short drive away. E.g., Stamford is located just 30 minutes from movies, shopping, & cultural, educational & sports venues in and near the the S.U.N.Y. Oneonta & Delhi campuses & @ Hartwick College & college towns of Oneonta and Delhi, slightly under an hour from historic Cooperstown, featuring the Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, the Farmers' Museum, the Glimmerglass Opera House and boating & dining along Lake Otsego's shore. SunnyHill is only approximately 40 minutes from Howe Caverns and the Iroquois Museum.

A sampling of some special summer fairs within half an hour's drive include the Delaware County & Sunshine Fairs, Margaretville Carnival, and the nearby Hobart Horseshoe Festival.

Among the local recreational activities, the Village of Stamford has a two excellent, safe public swimming pools (adult and baby-toddler), playground, tennis courts, two art galleries, a performing arts group, a library with free wi-fi and public computer & printer access, and a championship, historic, 18-hole public golf course. SunnyHill is a small family-run enterprise, owned and operated by Mary Thombs, with administrative assistance by her husband, Mr. George J. Robinson.

Because George is disabled veteran they rely on Denise Pinter as Property Mgr. She resides in the nearby hamlet of South Kortright. Denise occasionally greets guests & attends to their needs when Mary and/ior George are unavailable.

Mary & George are committed to attracting and serving SunnyHill's guests as they would receive guests in their own home.

Guests of all ages, and people of many interests have found SunnyHill welcoming and comfortable.

Mary is a private violin and voice teacher and choir director.

George is a retired teacher. After early retirement due to disability, he founded a non-profit fine arts services organization.

Evan, our son (10 yrs. old.) is, well, a 'nice kid,' and we love him lots.

Why MaryThombs, George J. Robinson, Co-Owners-Hosts chose Stamford

The Stamford area is 'authentic' country (principally dairy country); most full-time residents are 'locals,' having lived in the area all their lives, and thus as guests travel about and meet SunnyHill's 'neighbors' they enjoy a true rural experience. Frankly, we wanted to avoid those manifestly inauthentic, touristy faux- 'country' places- and the inflated prices one finds in the lodging and stores there. E.g., when you have a delicious, reasonably-priced breakfast in Stamford's TP's Cafe, you'll see and hear farmers and tradesmen talking 'shop' and weather vs.seeing tourists inquiring about the address of the nearest aromatherapy practitioner or yoga studio. (Not, of course, that there is anything wrong with those activities, per se. However, it's just that - presumably - one doesn't drive upstate to the mountains for that kind of experience when it is available much closer to home, e.g., on St. Mark's Pl. on Manhattan's Lower East Side.)

The beauty and variety of flora and fauna offered by SunnyHill's six acres (and scores of accessible surrounding undeveloped forested and pastured acres), and its proximity to four major ski centers were also compelling factors.

What makes this cottage unique

One example of how SunnyHill is unique vis-a-vis other local whole-house rentals: besides offering six lovely acres of seclusion, our cottage is a classic 'A-Frame' building with, among other features, cathedral ceiling, lots of windows, a wood pellet stove and a sleeping loft with views. Compared to conventional divisive, 'white box' houses, SunnyHill's A-frame configuration feels different (which is what one wants when one goes away to get away); it's open, airy, and bright.The ground floor floor plan encourages free-flowing activities, conversation and air- the east-west orientation ensures cooling breezes while the sleeping loft offers cocoon-like coziness.

Perfect romantic getaway! !!

We had an amazing valentine's weekend.. I booked this place months before February because I wanted to surprise my boyfriend and Jorge was always very helpful and with a great attitude! !.. when we got there he had a suprise for both of us as a welcome!.. if you are looking for a getaway, a nice place, quiet and really pretty, this is your place!! Is a beautiful cabin, very cleam, you find everything you need in there to cook, play, relax, etc.. is very close to the main road where you can go to restaurants if you wish.. I definetly recommend it!

Cozy and Relaxing Weekend Getaway

If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay, this is your place. We enjoyed the quite grounds and ambience. The pellet stove made the stay romantic and COZY.

George the owner was a gracious host and very warm and kind. He was readily available to assist with any of our needs. Which was greatly appreciated!!

We have 2 dogs who we brought with and george warmly accepted them and allowed them to have run of the cabin and the grounds...which they did :)

Overall we highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a nice weekend away that is not far. We are from long island and the overall trip was 2 1/2 hrs away!!

Wonderful week at Sunnyhill!

I took a getaway week at Sunnyhill hoping to work undistracted on my music, bike the Catskill Scenic Trail, and liberate myself from some of the frenetic, dehumanizing routes of "civilized life." Sunnyhill was the perfect choice for meeting these goals, a wonderful tonic for body and soul!

1. The sturdy a-frame is clean, organized, and comfortable. The carpet is brand new and a

treat for the feet!

2. The beautiful setting is exquisitely private. I often had the sensation of being in the only

campsite in an exclusive campground.

3. At the bottom of Decker Rd. is a pasture with almost twenty gorgeous miniature ponies.

At the other end of Decker, there are dozens of magnificent long-horned cattle. Patrolling

the house itself was a family of wild turkeys, two males and fourteen chicks!

4. I biked the Catskill Scenic Trail four times; especially enjoyable was pedalling down the

center of acres of tall corn heading south from South Kortright.

5. A personal hero, the nature essayist John Burroughs, grew up on a farm in nearby

Roxbury. His gravesite appropriately oversees the scenic fams and hillsides he and

his family stewarded.

6. No internet! No emails! No fear-mongering by media bullies!

7. George is a great host and a fine fellow. I hope to enjoy his hospitality again and again!

Anniversary Get-Away

My wife and I were looking to get away and relax for our 8th anniversary. We wanted someplace with a beautiful setting where we could bring our dog and that wouldn't cost a fortune. We found it all at SunnyHill.

The house is in great condition and had everything we needed. George, the owner, met us at the house and went over the details of the property. George is an incredibly meticulous and caring person, and it was a pleasure to rent his house. You can tell right away how much the property means to him, which was a refreshing change from checking into a hotel.

It was bitterly cold the days we were there, but we still enjoyed getting outdoors a bit, and our dog loved being able to run around and then come back inside to warm up by the wood-pellet stove.

I would recommend this property to anyone looking to relax in a bucolic setting.

Great weekend getaway

SunnyHill was a great location for a winter weekend getaway. The pellet stove did the trick to keep the place warm. Hobart, Stamford and other surrounding towns are excellent destinations for antique shopping and relaxing. Kitchenette and grill were excellent for preparing food. The views from inside the cottage were very beautiful. Overall a great, relaxing destination for a relaxing couples getaway.

A word of caution during the winter: upon our arrival pipes froze leaving us without running water temporarily. Fortunately Geroge was able to supply us until the pipes thawed. We received over 12 inches of snow one night and struggled to leave the unplowed driveway the next morning, despite traveling in an SUV. I would NOT recommend traveling in this area during times of heavy snowfall with a 2-wheel drive vehicle (especially lighter cars like sedans).

Owner's Response: We appreciate our guests’ taking the time to share their experience and are pleased that, in their guest book entry, they expressed an intention to return during a warmer season. With this exception (4:5), since opening in 11/’10, we have received exclusively 5-star reviews; therefore, we would like to respond to the 2 points raised in this review by providing contextual info. we think will instill confidence in prospective winter guests about our caring for their welfare. Re: frozen water pipe: As is typical for this rural area, SH’s water source is an underground pipe connecting its 285’ deep well to the cottage. Due to the possibility of freezing, our gut renovation included the latest & most costly electric anti-freeze system, consisting of an in-pipe, thermostatically controlled heating element activated when the below ground pipe’s water temp reaches freezing. We used the water the previous day, and shortly before our guests’ arrival were surprised to discover that the water was not flowing. We immediately called the plumber, and we delivered 24 gallons of potable water. The heater eventually coped & water flowed some hrs. later. Re: unplowed driveway: SH’s usual checkout time is 11AM; however, due to a forecast of heavy snow, that evening our guests decided to change their departure time to 9:30AM. Assuming he had until the usual 10:30 to service SH, our contracted plower was several miles away servicing other customers who had reserved earlier plow times to get to work. When George was called by the guests and learned that they got stuck trying to drive out prior to the plow’s arrival, he told them he would call to request rush service and would drive to the cottage himself to assist, using SH’s snow blower, shovel, & traction aids SH provides for winter guests. When George reached the plower, he regretted that he was unable to change his schedule, but that he would be at SH by the usual 10:30. When George arrived approx. 25 min. after receiving his guest’s call, he found their tracks leaving the driveway and turning onto the road. They made it! Mary & I strive to do everything possible to ensure our guests’ welfare, and in this case we have identified two procedural changes that will lessen the chances of “surprises.” 1. In the case of a forecasted significant drop in temp, we will keep the water running 24-7 since running water doesn’t freeze. 2. We have obtained a promise from our plower to prioritize our site when we have guests.

Flawless Experience

When I first saw this listing I wondered if it was too good to be true. Surprisingly, it really is as amazing as it seems. From the moment my boyfriend and I arrived at Sunnyhill George was very welcoming and helpful. He was and his wife were absolute joys to meet and talk to. Upon arrival, George gave a very thorough tour. I was so impressed by how well-equipped the cottage is. There is everything in there from kitchen utensils, to board games, to books. George even took time out to find brochures on local seasonal events and attractions and provided us with coupons to local restaurants. Every detail was covered. The view from the porch is breathtaking. The skylight above the bed is perfectly placed. The cottage is cozy and welcoming. Our stay in Stamford was honestly too good for words. In addition to the aforementioned two double-size beds and regular couch, we also have two new, premium twin-size futon mattresses, each of which can comfortably accommodate one guest; they may be joined to create a double bed for or two adults or children on the newly carpeted* Great Room floor (*our short-pile carpet's foundation consists of insulating anti-mold, anti-fungal coated padding.) All linens are provided and are 100% cotton. NOTE: Additional expenses (utilities, linens, cleaning) necessitate a $10/night surcharge per person in excess of four.
