Oakland House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Office, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Our sunny, secluded Oakland Hills home is perched high in the hills with a front deck providing wonderful views of Marin County, San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. We also have a private back patio with a 4-person cedar hot tub.

The front deck and entry of the house is reached by 18 stairs with two landings. The house has hardwood floors, a dining room (seats 6) and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows with views, a wood-burning fireplace, a modern kitchen with granite countertops.

The two upstairs bedrooms each have queen-sized beds, and the downstairs bedroom has both a queen-sized bed and a twin bed. The main bathroom has a bathtub with shower. The master bedroom has an adjoining office, and these rooms have French doors opening to the back patio and hot tub. The master bedroom also has its own bathroom with stall shower. The house is approximately 1500 square feet.

There are many books and paintings throughout the house.

You can reach San Francisco in 20-30 minutes by car or public transportation, and the village of Montclair, with its cafes, shops and a Sunday farmers' market, is only a 2-minute drive or a 20-minute (hilly) walk from our house. Berkeley, with its great university and wonderful restaurants, is only a 10-minute drive.

This neighborhood of Oakland is called Montclair. It's in the hills, and although close to city life in Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco, it's quite green and natural here, with many trees and birds and hiking trails.

About Janet den Breejen

We are Kees and Janet. We've lived in the beautiful Bay Area for over 30 years. We've been dividing our time between our Montclair home and our cabin in Yuba County, California, for the past six years. We have two grown sons, one living in New York and one in San Francisco, and one toddler granddaughter.

Kees is Dutch, born in Delft, who moved to Canada as a child and then to California. He is fluent in Dutch and leads a local Dutch meetup group. He is retired from the San Francisco Chronicle, having worked as a graphic artist, and is now a painter. Janet is a California native. She has recently retired and now works part-time as a freelance index editor for a legal publishing company. Both Kees and Janet love to travel.

Why Janet den Breejen chose Oakland

The benefits of this property include the view of San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate and Marin. A secluded setting but is centrally located, 5 minutes from Highway 13 to Berkeley (10 min), San Francisco (30 min) and Downtown Oakland (20 min), Marin County (40 min) Pacific Ocean at SF (1 hr). We are close to many miles of hiking in regional parks nearby. Swimming at nearby Lake Temescal. Near many charming shopping districts with excellent restaurants. Near the University of California at Berkeley (20 min).

What makes this house unique

We enjoy getting up early and walking our chocolate lab, Charlie, on his daily route, a half hour loop through the neighborhood. We like the aroma of the bay and eucalyptus trees and the fog clearing from the valleys. We often encounter does with fawns, Steller jays and red-tailed hawks and sometimes wild turkeys. We often walk down to Montclair Village for a latte at Peets Coffee.

Great Home

  • 5 of 5

I'd like to thank Janet and Kees for sharing their home with our multi-generational visit to Montclair. Their home is inviting and comfortable. It was wonderful not to have to travel with linens and towels. We appreciated all the kitchen essentials available. It was close to Rockridge BART station. Thoroughly enjoyed the view of the Bay, the Sunday Farmer's Market and the hot tub. We loved all the paintings, and books in their home. It was just what we needed while visiting family in the area.

Beautiful and Peaceful Retreat

  • of 5

We just spent a lovely week at Janet and Kass's beautiful home. It's the perfect house to share with family and friends. The view is spectacular and there is an abundance of light indoors. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you would need. Be sure to hike the trails off nearby Skyline Blvd and stroll the Montclair district with fine restaurants and quaint shops. We'll definitely return.

Amazing "home base" in Oakland!

  • 5 of 5

My family (2 adults, 2 teens, 1 child) had a wonderful time in the Bay Area using Janet and Kees's lovely home as a base. The house had plenty of room for all of us, a well-stocked pantry/kitchen, and a terrific view of the bay and the city. The artwork throughout the house is beautiful; my 3 daughters made a game of finding a new piece each day. =) As someone who has rented vacation properties in several different parts of the country, I was impressed by Janet and Kees's house as it was truly a home that we could live in during our 2-week stay. I did not feel anxious that my children would damage things by touching them; I felt comfortable cooking meals in the kitchen when we returned from being tourists in San Francisco or hiking in Roberts Park; and the check-in and out procedures were simple and effective.

I would definitely recommend having a car, as the hills are steep and plentiful; but public transportation, shopping, and amusements are all easily accessible. If you're a hiker, discover the Redwoods Regional Park 15 minutes from the house early in your stay; it's absolutely beautiful and so easily accessible.

Our family traveled from Hollywood Florida, Pittsburgh PA and

Ringwood NJ for a wedding and stayed in this wonderful home for 1 week. We would rent it again for our next vacation to California.

lovely dog friendly home

  • 4 of 5

This house was really lovely. We stayed a month. I would definitely return and stay again. It was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Fantastic views. The neighborhood is nice and safe and quiet. Back garden very private. Soaking tub amazing....lovely wooden tub, so relaxing.

Lots of animals in the area....birds, squirrels, deer, wild turkeys.

Owners are very accommodating and helpful.

One small suggestion...there were a few days the temperature reached the 80's/90's. The house gets very hot. One more fan would be helpful in addition to the one left. This would help cool the house down at night.

Overall a great home!

So appreciative of there dog policy. I have a large older dog. He managed to get up and down the steep stairs okay, struggled some days. Please note the steps are very steep, as described by the owners.

Central to exploring Bay Area

  • 5 of 5

The listing is accurate. While there are lots of walking, hiking and biking opportunities just out the door, all but the most ardent hikers probably want a car in this hilly Montclair location. We found there was plenty of room, everything worked and it was easy to entertain some local friends with all the kitchen equipment on hand. BART is short drive away and AC Transit is easy to access for destinations like SF. If you are not familiar with extensive East Bay Regional Park system, this home sits near access points for endless outdoor options. If you do the outdoor stuff or just like a relaxing soak, the hot tub is perfect. The best part is planning your days for late afternoon to feed the birds (wrens, chickadees, jays, robins, dove) and squirrels (lots of competition for food - owner supplied) while enjoying the sunset. Everything is in great shape but not so shiny that you are afraid to have kids touch anything - it is a home
