About David and Amanda O'Connell

The Owners of Allamanda Cottage met each other in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 1989. As international school educators, with global teaching experience, the owners currently live and work on island. Building the property in 2005 and living in the main house, the owners enjoy an outdoor lifestyle with their 2 daughters, who have grown up playing on the shores of Turks and Caicos Islands. We respect the peace and tranquility that visitors seek and request that all who visit our shores leave only footprints and take only photographs and memories.

David and Amanda O'Connell purchased this cottage in 2005

Why David and Amanda O'Connell chose Providenciales - Provo

Having met each other here in 1989, we were instantly captured by the beauty, safety and allure of these magical islands. The depth of colours in the waters and the warmth of the people that we got to know made our life in TCI memorable. After years of teaching in SE Asia, we returned to TCI to find that it was unchanged and remained remarkably undeveloped. We purchased our land and then eventually built a home in 2005.

What makes this cottage unique

Allamanda Cottage and its main house Allamanda Villa is perfectly situated a short drive to world class kite boarding along the expansive shores of Long Bay. A few steps to Leeward Marina, guests can explore Eco adventures through mangroves, upon paddle boards or kayaks. Tour operators in the Marina offer diving and fishing expeditions for all needs and the North Caicos Ferry terminal allows guests to embark on inexpensive trips to North and Middle Caicos. Guests will often take bicycles with them! Leeward, Providenciales....a truly incredible location!

A perfect beach vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our comments echo those of previous reviewers of this property - four thumbs up! David and Amanda are genial hosts who are more than happy to provide help and offer suggestions for making the most of your stay in spectacular Turks and Caicos. They have embraced island life and that was evident from the moment David kindly picked us up at the airport. En route to the cottage, he gave us a quick overview of Provo's history and its current political climate, pointed out various restaurants and shops, and even stopped at the local grocery store so that we could stock up.

The guest cottage is charmingly decorated and very cozy - perfect for a couple. We prepared most of our evening meals in the fully-equipped kitchenette and ate dinner on the quiet and very private back deck. Leeward is on the easternmost end of the island, far from the resorts and the industrial hub of Provo - a perfect setting for a peaceful get-away. (If night-life is what you crave, you should be sure to rent a car, or book into one of the many resorts in Grace Bay). We hired bikes for the duration of our stay and found that we could cycle to other parts of the island fairly easily. We rode to snorkeling sites at Smith's Reef and Coral Gardens; to Long Bay Beach, where we saw several kite-surfers at the east end but otherwise had miles of beach to ourselves; to the ferry terminal, where we caught a ferry to beautiful North and Middle Caicos Islands, and back to the Graceway Gourmet grocery store when it was time to restock the fridge. For us, the best attribute of this rental, aside from its exceptional hosts, is its location. The stunning beach, just minutes walk away, is pristine and quiet. Don't miss the stunning sunset. Grab the beach chairs provided, mix up a batch of your favourite beverage and enjoy!

Everything we hoped for

  • 5 of 5

We can't tell you how much we enjoyed our stay with David, Amanda. We had a wonderful week. David met us at the little airport and drove us to the car rental and then led us to the property. It's at the east end of the island, away from the hotels and condos. The little cottage was clean and well maintained and David and Amanda were perfect hosts; available when we needed to talk with them or ask questions and giving us plenty of privacy.

We would definitely recommend this property and in fact, we made a deposit for two weeks next winter.

The beach is about a 15 minute walk but is splendidly isolated. One morning we walked and saw only a few people. There's a wonderful restaurant, Flamingo a few minutes away - the curried grouper was great. They're cash only, about $50 for two, including drinks.

Graceway supermarket is only a few minutes away and I would say it's on a par with a Harris Teeter in the US. Rib-eye steaks were great (Dave has a grill by the pool) and they also have a great gourmet counter.

Don't miss Coral Gardens Beach, a few miles up the beach. It's an underwater national park where you can snorkel and see lots of beautiful fish. Dave and Amanda had great beach chairs with umbrellas, so make sure you take them along in the car.

We also took an afternoon snorkeling trip with Big Blue. They were great and not only took us to a couple of reefs, but gave us a chance to see humpback whales jumping.

Everyone we met on the island was friendly and helpful.

We can't wait to go back next year! Really glad we found this place.

A Peaceful Sojourn in Paradise

  • 4 of 5

What a wonderful time I had at this very quiet, secluded little cottage. It was my second visit to Turks, and was even more memorable than last year. The property is located just a short stroll away from the most beautiful beach in Provo... white powder sand, gentle waves and warm water. If you head left and walk the beach for a while in this direction, you will end up close to the larger resorts on Grace Bay; however, if you turn right it is mostly secluded and you can walk all the way around the north eastern point almost to the marina. Jogging is good, too, when the tide is low.

You are a 10 minute drive to Provo Ponies (a must!), a 5 minute drive to the ferry taking you over to North and Middle Caicos. These islands are also wonderful places to visit, and they each have quite a different topography in comparison to Provo.

My hosts, Amanda and Dave, were ever so helpful with their extensive knowledge of the island. Yogi (the puppy) was a delight!

Thank you both so much and I will definitely recommend your home to others.

Cozy Cottage by the Best Beach in Providenciales

  • 5 of 5

We spent 14 days at this cottage and it was great. The cottage had all that you would need and was clean. Thank you to our gracious hosts for creating this cottage in paradise. This cottage is so close to the most perfect beach and is close to all amenities in Grace Bay. Make sure you rent a car when visiting this island unless your intention is to stay at a resort and not venture out. Snorkeling was fantastic. Our hosts were very helpful with suggesting things to do and see as well as loaned us their Kayak for an adventure to the mangroves and Iguana island. Eating out is very expensive in Provo so we suggest that you cook your own meals for the most part, although our hosts suggested many great places to eat as well. We toured most of the island and if you want to stay some place that is safe, this is the place to choose. Thank you again to our wonderful hosts.

Little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have traveled extensively in the world, and while we have met many kind and hospitable people in our travels, it would be hard to top the kindness extended to us by David and Amanda, our hosts. While we were in Turks and Caicos, we needed to attend a special event, and not only did they offer to drive us there, they picked us up also, later on that evening; and that was just the beginning. David bought a two person kayak while were there and let us take it over to the gorgeous mangrove island near Leeward. Again, he dropped us off with the kayak and picked us up a couple of hours later. By the time we left, we felt more like family than guests. As for the place itself, it is small basic and very clean with a very private screened in porch. You can even cook basic meals in the unit. A quick five minute walk or leisurely ten minute walk takes you to a beach that is as deserted as it beautiful. (If you see a dozen people, it is crowded that day.) If you stroll one way down the beach, you come to fine and affordable beachfront restaurant after twenty minutes, that serves excellent food. If you stroll the other way, you pass a few abandoned and derelict luxury homes and come to a sandy point that marks the north east point of the island. You will probably be almost alone out there. The place is a couple of kilometers from the main street of Provo and renting a car or bicycles (which we did) is recommended. The area is incredibly quiet at night and the only annoyance of the whole trip was few tiny biting insects which did not really interfere with our overall experience. If you are satisfied with clean basic accommodations that offer you quick access to one of the most beautiful stretches of beach you will ever see in the world, this place is for you. No, it is not the cheapest place to go, but many of the experiences that you have will be priceless!
