COMPLETELY PRIVATE WATERFRONT HOME...ADVENTURER'S PARADISE, RICH AESTHETIC

Drake Bay House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 additional pull out beds, sleeps 6-8

This is your chance to completely escape the monotonous grind of everyday life and rejuvenate your body and mind with a healthy dose of natural beauty, active adventure, rustic luxury, and cultural authenticity. All five senses will be on full alert here…each one contributing to an overall sense of joy and relaxation. Start your mornings with the sounds of howler monkeys, the sight of tropical sunrises, and the aroma of Costa Rican coffee that would put Starbucks to shame. Fill your days with a plethora of river, ocean, or rainforest adventure – all available directly from your front steps. Finally, wind down the evening watching the flight of white ibis across the sunset over Isla Violin with a cold cervesa or mojito in hand. Sound like paradise to you...we think so too!

Our home's location on the Sierpe River – a fully navigable river that flows into the Pacific Ocean – serves as a direct connection to all of the best adventure activities that Costa Rica is known for. Accessible directly from the front steps of the cabina are 5 kilometers of hiking trails that weave through primary rainforest, wetlands, mangroves, and 3 tropical fruit filled gardens - great for wildlife watching and birding. Feel free to help yourself to the fruit, the resident monkeys certainly do! Four kayaks are stored on-site and are yours to use for exploring the river and its tributaries. Are you a fan of fishing? If so, you’ll be glad to know that some sizable red snapper and snook have been caught from the two riverfront piers. For adrenaline junkies some pretty intense mountain biking and horseback riding trails connect the property to the Mirimar mountain range to the south. Just want to relax?...then you'll love the lounger and hammock on the deck overlooking the river..

In addition to the on-site activities, it is highly recommended that you arrange for a variety of tour boats to pick you up at the riverfront dock for some of the ocean related activities that have made this area so popular with tourists. Favorites include deep-sea fishing (world class in-shore and off-shore), snorkeling, diving (Costa Rica’s most renowned), wildlife watching in Corcovado National Park, Cano Island hiking, snorkeling, surfing, beach cruises, and dolphin and whale watching. All of these tours can easily be arranged for you by the owner and are of a very high quality.

The home itself is brand new and was built in the signature “refined rustic” style of our Canadian builder. Large beamed exotic hardwoods combine with lofted ceilings and ample use of screened in windows to emphasize views of, and harmony with, the natural surroundings. A 300 sq. ft. veranda has rocking chairs, a breakfast nook, and lounger available to relax in while enjoying the amazing views. Despite being very isolated and completely “off the grid”, a very large solar system, on demand hot water, and 3G cell phone will keep you comfortable and connected. Ask about internet. King and queen sized beds, 500 thread count sheets, and custom built furniture convey a true sense of luxury in the jungle. One of two spacious 3/4 baths with high volume/pressure showers connect directly to first floor bedroom and living area, while the other is located in the upstairs master suite. The kitchen/dining area seats up to 9 and has a 6 burner oven/stove, fridge, and freezer.

While the enjoyment of our river retreat provides the ultimate in tranquility, beauty, and seclusion, it must be said that this experience is better geared towards those who are adventurous, independent, and enjoy physical activities. The walk to the cabina from the boat dock is the equivalent of a few blocks and involves a large hill. While the home is very new and provides a wide range of modern comforts and conveniences, you must remember that you are “off the grid” and in the middle of a tropical rainforest. This cabin does not have air conditioning, but 9 overhead fans and a design utilizing cross-ventilation measures keeps the cabina comfortable. In our version of paradise we sacrifice air conditioning for air of the purest condition!

This home is not suitable for children aged 2 or younger and the infirm. Ask about suitability for children aged 3-6 and the elderly.

My father and I built this home in 2010 but have been visitors and business owners in the Sierpe River area since 2006. We live in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, but try to visit Costa Rica as often as possible.

Cassidy Scheer purchased this house in 2010

Nowhere else in Costa Rica can you access the rainforest, river, and Pacific Ocean right out your front door. I place a big value on authenticity and access to outdoor adventure activities. Sierpe is the best spot for this in Costa Rica. Waking up to the sound of toucans and eating fresh picked fruit for breakfast before going out to the ocean to fish, snorkel, dive, or surf, is a regular day here!

This is the real Costa Rica. This is the Costa Rica you see on National Geographic magazine!

PARADISE FOUND AT SIERPE DEL PACIFICO

  • 5 of 5
My family of five had the adventure of a life time at Sierpe del Pacifico (our three children range in ages from 8-17). The jungle home is stunning, clean and placed right in the middle of the jungle--toucans, parrots, capuchin and howler monkeys are neighbours.
We loved the solitude and natural splendour of the property. Paradise is simply sitting on the porch, overlooking the jungle and the Sierpe River, watching scarlet macaws fly by.
We took boat trips to Corcovado Park, Cano Island, Violin Island and went horseback riding with Rosita (which was so much fun)!
Caesar was a top notch guide in Corcovado--very informative and he tracked a tapir for us.
Felipe was a friendly, kind and knowledgeable driver on our way to and from San Jose. In fact, everyone we dealt with regarding our vacation was friendly, knowledgable and eager to help.
The experience best suits those who enjoy nature and wilderness, don't mind hot and humid weather and can handle a 5-10 minute up hill climb to the house from the dock.
Make sure to stock up on groceries well before Sierpe as we found the town grocery store lacking.
Being submersed in the true jungle, I learned more on the Oso Peninsula about life than in my 8 years of university.
I've been home for a while; yet, I still miss the howler monkeys and their morning calls.
Thank you Cassidy, it was the most amazing vacation and I'd love to return.

PARADISE REGAINED

  • 5 of 5
Sierpe del Pacifio is perhaps the most amazing experience with nature you'll ever have. The climb to the top is a bit grueling but the rewards are many. Although off the grid, there is still solar electricity and on demand hot water if you are conservative. The natural cabina is rustic but well designed and comfortable, with beautiful natural woods and hand-carved beams. The beds are very comfortable and the cabina is scrupulously clean. Just sitting on the back deck in the great leather rockers and watching the monkeys, toucans and other incredible species is worth the price of admission (bring binoculars and a decent cam era with a zoom lens). The welcome package you receive is amazingly well written and complete (and should be followed religiously). The excursions down the Sierpe river to Cano Island, Drake Bay and Corcovado Park are once in a lifetime experiences. DO NOT MISS the horseback ride with the charming Rosita. It may have been the best cultural experience of any vacation we have had. Guillermo will make sure your stay is completely hassle-free and is available by the provided cell phone. You really should just do this, it ranks in our top five "don't miss".

JUNGLE SERENITY

  • 5 of 5
Well, this was my kind of place. I'm always looking for that out of the way place where there is an abundance of wildlife. It's hard to find the out of the way and also a reasonably comfortable place to stay. Truly beautiful house. I loved waking up each morning with a group of 35 white faced capuchin monkeys playing in the trees outside our bedroom window. And, sitting on the deck in the evening with incredible toucan just feet away. It was very easy to arrange for someone to take us fishing, or take us snorkeling to Cano Island. Everyone was very friendly and punctual. We loved it. My only complaints would be mosquitos (which need to be there to feed the bats), so it is a small complaint. And, the welcome book very strongly states that any dog that visits the house not be fed and basically that dogs are bad for the eco system. There was a very sweet dog that slept on the porch every night (i think it was his safe place) and I also think that dogs have lived in the very nearby village for many years and are part of the eco system. The new houses being built here and the people visiting are a much greater threat.

NICE SETTING

  • 4 of 5
The cabin is beautiful with a porch with view to die for.
Because of the time of year we chose to visit Sierpe we encountered tremendous heat and humidity. Our only relief from this heat was many cold showers per day which was not enough to keep us cool. Additionally access to a nice beach was rather expensive as it involved paying about $60 per person for a round trip to the beach which was about an hour and a half away. The jungle setting with all the monkeys and other wildlife was quite exciting. We woke up to the faces of curious white faced monkeys every morning in the trees. Kitchen was beautiful. Pots and pans need to be replaced as they were in bad shape. Rest of home is perfect and extremely comfortable with exception of the great need for some type of cooling system for the house as we were dripping with sweat continually. A great place for us if the temperature were closer to the upper 70's.

WONDERFUL JUNGLE ADVENTURE

  • 5 of 5
We had a magical time during our 4 night stay. The house is great, the view from the house....what can I say, amazing. The grounds around the property were a real jungle and the private boat trips to Corcovado, Cano Island and the night river tour we did (throw Rayna company) with the guide Cesar were an adventure but with a feeling that we are in very good hands.
On our arrival day the white face monkeys dropped by the house to check out their new Neighbors.
We were a family with 5 children ages 5 to 17. We had requested 2 additional air mattresses that Cassidy supplied in order that each kid will have his own bed.
The only mild disturbance we experienced was not having hot water for 2 days as there was a problem with the heating system.
Things to expect:
In order to reach the property there is a 5-7 minute walk that is partly steep and might be difficult for people with disabilities.
As other reviewers mentioned you should expect less comfort then a high star hotel that you can find in Drake bay area but I think you will gate out of this experience much more especially regarding quality time with your family.
Cassidy notes that were sent throw the e-mail prior to our arrival are very important and very helpful in order to enjoy the stay.
A better map of the jungle trails surrounding the property can help enjoy touring the grounds around the house.
Don't forgets to buy fruits and especially the pineapples that tasted wonderfully.
Over all I grade this as a 10 out of 10 adventure.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the "10 out of 10" Eyal! We're very happy that you and your family valued this experience for the authenticity, adventure, and privacy it affords people who are willing to go "off the grid" and immerse themselves in the Sierpe experience. I'm sorry that the hot water failed you for a couple of days. As soon as Guillermo became aware of it he got on it and it has been working well for our subsequent guests. We hope you can visit us again soon! Pura Vida! - Cassidy

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - A BEAUTIFUL HOME AND AN EXTRAORDINARY PLACE -TRUE COSTA RICAN EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
So happy to have found this amazing place. A true Costa Rican experience, we awoke to the sounds of monkees swinging through the trees every morning, and the chatter of toucans, egrets, parrots and scarlet macaws. One morning I awoke from a nap and looked out the window to see a sloth moving from tree to tree.

Coordinating our booking with Cassidy was a pleasure, and working with Guillermo to arrange our daily activities was simple as well. We did snorkelling and scuba at Cano Island, took a tour of Corcovado (a long 2 hour boat ride), did some fishing on the river and had a fantastic night hike where we got to see poison dart frogs, spiders and other really cool wildlife. And as amazing as Corcovado was, my wife commented to me that she enjoyed touring the property searching for wildlife the most. The grounds are lush and filled with things to see and hear, yet without any other people around.

So...basically, you get all of the access you would have at a resort, but also the intimicy of your own beautifully constructed home with all the necessities. The house is gorgeous, the photos on this site can't even do it justice. And the ceiling fans (together with refreshing showers) provided all of the cooling that we needed. Beautiful and comfortable.

You should, however, be aware of the following:
- hot water was sporatic at best, when unheated (most of the time) it was still a tolerable temp;
- ants. there were some ants in the house and in the kitchen. You can spray, but if you leave food out, the ants will appear in force. Leave ALL food in the fridge and clean up thoroughly and you will be fine.

This is NOT the Marriott, and if you want luxury amenities, you probably want to look elsewhere. But if you are willling to sacrifice restaurants and room service in exchange for peace, tranquility and sightseeing no resort can offer, then you can do no better than Sierpe.

Owner's Response: So glad to hear that you enjoyed the home for all the reasons that make it so special Jason! I can think of no other place in the Osa where nature and adventure is right in front of you all the time!

I also just wanted to let you know that we've just installed a newer, larger, and more expensive water pump and pressure reservoir at the house. The on-demand heating system required a little more pressure than the old pump was providing. This is a non-issue now. Hot water is flowing with the reliability of the ebb and flow of the Sierpe river tides! Pura Vida - Cassidy
