Our Story: My grandfather, The Admiral, purchased a property in Summer Home Park many, many years ago when my mother and her three siblings were young. Paw-Paw’s wished for his children and grandchildren was to grow up together being supportive and close to each other and no matter what. I grew up with my brother and cousins every year at Summer Home Park and now as adults we are dispersed around the country. I have close family everywhere because of Paw-Paw and his dream came true. My son grew up with his cousins and soon there will be the next generation too. My Grandfather’s small cabin has now turned into a hillside of “Dawson’s.” As our family grew we needed more space and ever since a little girl I had coveted this sweet, darling, perfect, little, vintage, dream cabin located on the same hill as Paw-Paw's first cabin. We purchased it a little over 10 years ago. Paw-Paw had a ball rowing his grandchildren in the row boat; he had a sarcastic sense of humor too, so we named it: The Admiral’s Oar House. Every so often Paw-Paw would go off to the Bohemian Grove and hang out with other grandfathers to do grandfather stuff with other like-minded grandfathers! :)
About The Admiral's Oar House: A beautiful remodeled, but vintage cabin (100 years old) with the integrity of the board and batten walls and high would beam ceiling, but has the luxury of modern design and convenience. Anything modern we tried to keep hand-made and simple, because our winter life is far from simple and full of fast moving technology. We even kept the Celtic fireplace, but there is a Wedgwood push button insert for the luxury of instant warmth and flame with the safety of modern technology. The red and white curtains are handmade and some of the blanket are knitted by hand, by Grandma Rita. The 1950’s vintage white kitchen is intact, but with new clean maple floors and newly covered vintage tables that are blue and chrome. You will even find 1950's aprons on the racks in the Kitchen.
SWEET! The cabin is sweet. What makes it so sweet is that it has its own private redwood grove and it has maintained its 100 year old vintage feel with things like the original claw foot tub, and the remodeled kitchen (1950). The kitchen is adorable. My son’s favorite times are at night when the whole family goes to bed. It feels just like the Walton’s. The parents are in the roomy master bedroom loft; the kids and other adult couples are dispersed in the other sleeping beds/rooms. You can slightly hear the night life at the lodge and everyone is so happy. The two story ceiling is charming and has an antler chandelier that complements the down stuffed denim sofas that are totally Ralph Loren. It was so important to my little cousin that the antlers were “found” antlers and no animals were harmed. We feel the cabin is in a perfect location. It is just above the high water flood line and is close enough for a short walk to the beach and lodge. It is also a perfect size. It maintains that small cozy cabin feel, yet it has soaring wood beamed open ceilings that offer a spacious feel.
Community: The community at Summer Home Park is not like any other place in the World. It is more like the summer camps of the 1950’s. A horn goes off at noon and folks seem to go to the beach at that time. Another horn sounds at 5:00, signaling the start of the evening. I’m not going to tell you what happens at night, because you just have to experience it. The winters in Summer Home Park are quiet and wet and the summers are lively from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There are activities for children and parties at night at the lodge.
The LODGE: The lodge has amazing; food, wine, music, dancing and total unadulterated fun. Everyone is extremely friendly and outgoing just like the good 'ole days of summer camps.
Other Activities: The cabin is also close to wine-tasting, abalone diving and the Bohemian Grove, but you never have to leave the park to have fun. Also, we never get into a car once we are there. Our cabin does not have parking. We unload the car at the steps and park in the provided FREE public parking at the corner and we never see our car until we are ready to leave. There is something simple, special and old fashioned about that.
Please note that Dogs are not allowed on Summer Home Park beach. We allow well trained well behaved dogs and cats, but the yard is not fenced.
