Greg or Judy Asbury, owners
Greg and Judy Asbury acquired the Pinney House in 2003. They are active engaged hosts who have painstakingly renovated the 10,000 square foot Queen Anne Victorian over the past 10 years. Obviously they have either incredible dedication or they are still questioning their sanity in taking this on.
The Pinney House was designed by the famous Victorian architects Joseph and Samuel Cather Newsom. There are only a very few of their works still in existence. Unlike most Victorians it is open and airy. Originally a mountain retreat it has had a history of renewing and healing energy in its 125 year history. There are several permanent residents including Judy and Greg who have created a pleasant collegial atmosphere in the house.
Judy and Greg love the quaint village of Sierra Madre with its artisan shops, the Playhouse, and great restaurants. Sierra Madre is like 'Mayberry in LA'. It's also very close to Pasadena including Old Town, the Huntington Gardens, the Rose Bowl, and we are conveniently near the end of the Rose Parade route. Its always fun to go down to see the floats during Post Parade during New Years Day. Sierra Madre has its own Farmer's Market on Wednesdays and a much larger one close by on Saturdays at PHS.
We have four grown children. During the renovation we all lived in the house together including their spouses enjoying each other's company. We hosted our daughter's wedding and several years later our first grandchild arrived at the Pinney House.
Today we travel extensively on business and want to share this lovely place with you. When in town you can often find Greg or Judy on the front porch or in the solarium having a glass of wine and cheese. And when we are not here Sonia is our fabulous house manager. Join us!
The Newsom brothers were to Victorian Architecture like Frank Lloyd Wright was to modernist houses or Greene and Greene were to Craftsman Houses. There are only a few remaining examples of their prolific works. The Carson Mansion in Eureka was perhaps their penultimate achievement. The Pinney House was a rather simple example of a mountain retreat. Situated in the town of Sierra Madre, an oasis in greater Los Angeles, the city has 3 square miles, less than 10,000 residents, no traffic lights, hiking, shopping, dining. All an attractive combination just minutes from downtown Los Angeles and its many attractions. Just ask anyone in town-- everyone has a story to tell about the Pinney House!
The Pinney House has been at the center of this community for over 125 years. Its sweeping veranda is a great place to relax and enjoy passersby. The Conservatory is a peaceful retreat that makes you feel part of nature while relaxing. The parlor echoes bygone days .
