My sister, brother and I own the house, and we have been coming here for weekends and extended stays for years. Among the three of us, we work in education, music, public health and finance.
The Owner purchased this house in 1989
We love how close the house is to NYC, and that when we arrive we can look out over farms and forested hills. We swim, hang out on the lawn, play board games with our nieces and nephews on the porch, go swimming in the nearby lake, and barbeque and cook big meals for our friends and families.
We had a delightful time on our recent 4 day weekend. The house was very comfortable, the property was beautiful and the views were breathtaking.
This is a gorgeous house in a gorgeous hilltop setting. Very private, lovely veranda, huge garden, outdoor pool and terrific views. Inside is bright, spacious, well equipped and furnished with a sense of casual elegance. In other words, a grand country house you can feel completely spoiled and, at the same time, completely at home in. All is as described. The owners are quick to respond and very pleasant to deal with. This year was our second time here and we are already looking forward to our third.
My husband and I stayed in this beautiful home for a week. The setting at the top of a hill ensured that the home was always cool, even in August. The view from the porch is so wonderful that we honestly could have spent all our time just relaxing and enjoying it. However, we spent our days hiking the trails just down the road, and ate at several wonderful restaurants in the towns of Litchfield, New Preston and Washington Depot. We also enjoyed a visit to the Guy Wolff pottery in Bantam, where we bought some beautiful hand-thrown flower pots, and White Flower Farm in Litchfield, where we saw lovely display gardens.
The home is clean and spacious, and beautifully furnished. There were plenty of clean linens and towels provided, and the washer/dryer was a great help. The pool is sparkling clean, and a wonderful way to while away an afternoon. The owners were prompt and helpful in responding to any questions we had prior to our visit, and made sure we had several contact numbers in case of concerns during our stay.
We would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives, and we look forward to visiting again in the future.
We spent a great weekend in this wonderful house in early June 2013. We were 3 couples and 3 children between 2 and 3 year-old. The house is beautiful and very well maintained. We had lots of space and there was even a room with plenty of toys for the children. The swimming pool was nice and very clean. The garden is huge and we've had the chance to see a dear and a few rabbits.
The location is great as it is really in the middle of the nature but in the same time just 10 minutes away from grocery stores and other convenient stores.
We absolutely recommend this house for a weekend or a longer period of time. We definitely look forward to coming back to this house.
The positives: The renting process was smooth and the owner was quick to answer any questions I had. The home is in a great location and the home overall was clean and lovely with a fantastic view. The beds are comfortable and there is plenty of space to accommodate several people
The exceptions: While the old world charm of the house was appreciated the 'old world' amenities were not. The home is need of some updates that I think are essential for a rental property and for the price point of this particular rental. The appliances are old and well "mostly worked". The washer only washed on hot and there were several tricks to keep it running. The coffee pot leaked, which the owner did agree to replace when told after we left. Most of pots and pans were rusty and in my opinion not suitable to cook with. The TV in the living room was basic local channels only, the signal was sketchy and the TV in the bedroom did not work at all. Despite these issues, I still give the rental 4 stars b/c my husband and I had a great vacation and made due with what was provided with a few trips to Target to fill in the gaps (i.e. coffee pot and washcloths).
My husband, his twelve-year-old son, and I rented the house for a month during the summer. The house was a great place to get away from it all and was just what we were looking for. Sitting on a hill top, the property is cooler than the nearest town, which is about a five to ten minute drive. There are some beautiful lakes and ponds for fishing, hiking, and swimming.
The house itself was very well maintained - it was very clean, well-stocked with kitchen items, games, pool toys, and it was beautifully furnished as well. The pool was super clean, and the owners sent someone once a week to maintain the pool as well as the lawns and gardens. The house is a great place to unwind, swim, and cook -- if you don’t mind driving a little out of the way, there are some lovely gourmet markets in the Bantam / Litchfield area as well.
There were no unpleasant surprises here -- everything was as advertised or better, and we would recommend the house to anyone looking for a beautiful quiet place to spend some time away.
Just wanted to thank you so much for the fantastic weekend! We got together with family and friends over Memorial Day Weekend and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. What a gorgeous house, and a lovely location! We especially appreciated that the house was not only comfortable and beautiful, but also that you provided so much to make it functional. We also enjoyed watching our neighbor the turkey strutting and sunning himself in the yard. We had dinner on the porch in back, watching the clouds roll by, and went to sleep to the sound of frogs chirping by the pool. Had a beautiful walk at the White Memorial reservation in Litchfield, and a vigorous hike outside of Kent. This area is perfect for a weekend or a longer visit - can't wait to come back!
Lakes: State park in walking distance (30 minutes) offers swimming with lifeguards and canoes for rent. Winchester lake is a large, beautiful lake a 10 minute drive away - great for fishing or boating (bring your own equipment) and good for adult swimmers.
Bikers' and runners' paradise: huge network of country roads to explore!
Music: Norfolk's Yale music center is 25 minutes away http://music.yale.edu/norfolk/ and Infinity Hall is close by http://www.infinityhall.com/calendar
Skiing: The closest mountain is Mohawk, 30 mins away, and Jiminy Peak is 1 hour 40 mins away
