Tallahassee Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Would you like to visit a place where you have the chance to observe otters, squirrels, alligators, deer, raccoons, woodpeckers, blue herons, hummingbirds, cormorants, fish, and many other species of Florida wildlife in their natural habitats? And, you can do this from the comfort and safety of an observation deck or dock over the river.

If you prefer, you can just sit on the screened porch overlooking the beautiful St. Marks River and soak up the peaceful solitude of a completely unspoiled environment. As the sun goes down, you will be captivated by the rhythmic melodies of the frogs and crickets, guaranteed to soothe your soul.

Guest Comments

This is our second stay here and we know we will be back again. We so appreciate the beauty and natural setting of this place. In our two visits here, we have enjoyed seeing deer, owls (right outside our windows) and numerous Florida birds hanging out on the river.

Description: Our hosts Floyd and Carolyn were attentive and available to our needs. The Seinyard restaurant has definitely become one of our favorite places to eat (awesome food) and we make sure we visit it every time we are blessed enough to come back to visit.

Thank you Floyd and Carolyn for sharing your Retreat

This place is amazing! We have fallen in love with the breathtaking and extremely relaxing environment.

The jumping fish were hysterical! However, the cows walking in the river topped the fish. The house was perfect and had every thing we needed.

Thank you so much for an amazing weekend. We will be back!

Description: Well, what can we say except the location was superb. The interior design is a testament to all your hard work and imagination. Spotlessly clean. So tranquil and relaxing sitting on the dock in the morning.

The beds are some of the most comfortable we have had the pleasure to sleep in. The nighttime chorus (of the crickets and frogs) is something we will always remember. Great fun trying to catch the uncooperative mullet in the river, but we did catch one at the Seinyard restaurant and it was mind blowing.

So, Floyd and Carolyn, thank you very much for a wonderful Retreat.

“Haste ye back”

What an awesome experience! Our accommodations were unsurpassable, and, to say the least, our trip was a success.

Now that we found you it goes without saying you’ll be stuck with us and our soon-to-be FSU student. We’ll be seeing you again.

Description: We really enjoyed our stay at the St. Marks Retreat. We paddled our canoes on the St. Marks, Sopchoppy, Wacissa and Aucilla rivers. All lovely. Tons of birds, otters, alligators and turtles. We also went hiking at Leon Sinks and biking on the St. Marks Trail.

This cabin is delightful- quiet, peaceful and very clean. There are more rivers and trails to enjoy, so we will be back.

Floyd, it has been a pleasure meeting you and staying at the St. Marks Retreat. After working 11 years in the hotel industry, I have to say this is the cleanest and one of the best decorated properties I have ever seen. The nature and river next to the Retreat is good for mind, soul and body.

The St. Marks Retreat is the Best!

Beautiful Hideaway

  • 5 of 5
This was a perfect place to stay. Deer in the yard, fish in the river. Pictures look great but when you get there you find it much better than you imagined! Very clean and had everything we needed. Floyd and Caroline are wonderful people and very accommodating. You will really miss a great experience if you don't stay here!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and for staying with us at the Retreat. Happy to hear you saw the deer. They are so use to seeing people that they are not afraid of us. Will stand and just watch us. Looking forward to your next visit. Loved the pictures that you sent us and will start a photo album with them. Have a great fall!

So relaxing-wonderful time w/ family

  • 5 of 5
Bringing our oldest son to FSU for his freshman year, we decided to make a family vaca out of it. So glad we stayed here! Floyd and Carolyn are wonderful, gracious hosts, and the cabin is amazing! Unbelievably peaceful and relaxing. We saw deer from the deck, manatees and other water life from the dock, and hummingbirds from the porch. Ahhh, the porch-our favorite place! Board games at the large picnic table, relaxing, laughing, reminiscing and just enjoying family time in the overstuffed chairs and porch swing- in our "normal" lives, it's hard to get everyone together for more than a couple of minutes. Even tried our hand at fishing from the dock w/ the poles on the porch-quite hilarious-had to buy dinner-but it was fun. The cabin had everything needed for a family of four, beds are very comfortable, good water pressure (that's a biggie w/ me), and you can actually get COLD water from the tap-unheard of in Sarasota in August. We will definitely be back! Thank you Floyd and Carolyn, for a wonderful send-off for Zachary, and a wonderful family vacation!

Owner's Response: We enjoyed sharing our Retreat with you and meeting your family. As I told you, our Retreat was built in 1950 and served as housing for Florida State University professors and their families on campus. This house was purchased from FSU by someone who had lived in one of the houses as a child. His father was a professor of English and he remembered living in one of the houses. The house was located on Tennessee Street until the early 70's when FSU decided to auction off the little white houses. There were several houses lining the street. He bought it and relocated the house to the St. Marks River. My husband happened to be in the area and noticed that it was for sale. He came home and told me that he had found a house that he thought I would enjoy. I love hardwood floors and tile. It had both. We purchased the house in 1987 and enjoyed using it on the weekends until we started raising Cavaliers. The Retreat has the original floors and walls. It needed to have the kitchen and bathroom remodeled and other improvements. When we decided to open the Retreat, we had central air and heat put in, built a deck going all the way around the house, and a walk way to use if the river was out of its banks. We have had to use it a couple of times. We had guests with us from the UK and they felt right at home with the river under the house. They said it felt like a tree house. We also added a walkway out to the river for those people who want to bring their kayaks to explore the river. The front porch is our favorite place to sit, too. Glad you were able to see the wildlife in the area around the cabin. We look forward to your next visit and wish Zachary the best at FSU!!

Peaceful Paradise at St. Marks

  • 5 of 5
This is our second trip to St. Marks retreat. What a beautiful place to relax and get in touch with your inner-self!
The cabin is cozy, secluded and has all the comforts of home. It is generously supplied with everything you need. We enjoy grilling out on the gas bar-b-que. We love the screened in porch and enjoy being serenaded by the birds as we drink our morning coffee.
Carolyn and Floyd are gracious hosts and wonderful people. They supply you a book listing all the things in the area to do. The book is not only informative but very humorous!!
FYI--if you are in the mood for barbque, be sure to stop and eat at Dickeys Barbque Pit in Woodville. The food is incredible and the service great.
For those with an adventurous spirit, the Retreat is within short driving distance of hiking and biking opportunities at the St Marks Wildlife Refuge, Tom Brown Park and the St. Marks bicycle trail.

Owner's Response: We are so thankful to have special guests like you at our Retreat. This past weekend we had a metal roof put on the Retreat. So now when it rains you will be able to hear the pitter patter of the rain which is soothing to the soul. Glad you enjoyed Dickeys. We are lucky to have Dickeys in our community of Woodville and Tom Brown Park is just a few miles away. We look forward to your next visit. Thanks for your wonderful review!

Four nights in March

  • 5 of 5
Have just returned from our first stay at St. Marks Retreat with reservations for later in the year. Though weather wasn't typical of Florida in March, the cabin was snuggly comfortable and very well stocked with everything we could have needed, and even on rainy days the screened porch is large & dry. Setting is exactly as pictured, natural growth surroundings, quiet, restful, but not uncomfortably remote from "civilization". Enjoyed visiting the National Wildlife Refuge this trip, look forward to a longer stay, more exploring next time.

Thanks Floyd & Carolyn.

Owner's Response: Floyd & I enjoyed meeting both of you and look forward to seeing you again. Hopefully, next time the weather will be better. You have mentioned in your review what we love about the Retreat. The quietness and the natural setting is what makes it such a special place. It is refreshing to be at the Retreat and enjoy all of the animals in the river and on the land. Thanks for your review of our Retreat.

What a fun Vacation!!

  • 4 of 5
This cabin is so cozy and quaint. This location couldn't have been better suited for our hobbies. So many State Parks close by for hiking and wild mushroom hunting. Also tons of Geocaching. The cabin has a wonderful Florida room, we couldn't take advantage of. The weather was a bit too cool. Did the most amazing cruise in Wakulla Springs State Park. A must do for everyone. Loved Floyd's and Carolyn's Check List did almost everything on it. It was so wonderful to deal with such caring owners.

Very Comfortable Stay

  • 5 of 5
Our family had a relaxing and comfortable weekend stay in November. The cabin had everything we could possibly need. The beds are comfortable and the view of the river is lovely. There are so many pretty trees surrounding the cabin that our two year old kept saying she was "looking for Bambi in the jungle!" We enjoyed relaxing on the large porch with our coffee in the morning and listening to the birds. Seafood dinner at the nearby Seinyard restaurant was very tasty and the drive into downtown Tallahassee was much easier than we expected. We're looking forward to staying again... Next time we just hope to be able to stay longer so we can canoe down the river and visit St. Marks and Wakulla Springs. There is so much to do here if you're a nature lover!

Owner's Response: We hope you will be able to visit again with us and have the time to take a trip down the river in a canoe or take a guided tour led by our friends, Woody and Kathy, who live on the river. The river is perfect and is so pretty this time of the year with all of the fall colors. You can paddle up the river to where the spring comes out of the ground and slowly drift back down to the cabin. The water is usually crystal clear and you can see lots of the fish. Sheephead come up in the river and the manatees come to feed around our dock in the summer. Sorry, your little one did not see Bambi. We often see the deer while at the Retreat late in the afternoon as they are passing through our property. We were sitting on the porch one evening and watched 6 wild turkeys roost in the trees directly across the river from us. We never know what we might see while at the Retreat.

Thanks for taking such excellent care of the Retreat. It made our job of cleaning up so much easier.
