Overview

Edenton Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Chateau / Country House, 4 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 2-8)

'Wait 'til you see the Blount's Mulberry Hill...so begins an entry in nationally known, best-selling author's, Inglis Fletcher's Lusty Winds for Carolina. This spot, patented as a plantation in 1669, is now eliciting similar accolades from those who stroll its expansive confines three centuries later. Mulberry Hill is situated majestically on the Albemarle Sound and is surrounded by an 18 hole golf course. The National Registry manor house has four levels with an elegant dining room and living room entered into by a grand hall, all with 12' ceilings. A common area, with a fireplace, kitchen, laundry room and office are on the first level and is perfect for dining, as well and relaxation. A terrace is just off this common area and is ideal for dining, as is the porch just above----from both vistas, guests can view the spectacular sunset meeting the Albemarle Sound. An FAA approved airport (Northeastern Regional Airport) is located within a mile and a half from the property. Also nearby are the Outer Banks and Norfolk, just an hour and fifteen minutes. The owners are willing to line up tours, sail boating cruises, flight lessons, fishing trips and golfing packages, if requested. They are both known for their Southern hospitality!

Keywords: Magnificent vistas of the Sound and Golf Course--18 century grand manor house on extensive acreage!

Wonderful Hospitality

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just visited the beautiful town of Edenton, NC and chose to stay in this lovely home! The hospitality was just as expected with all the southern charm we were looking for! The bed and linens were very comfortable and we had a wonderful nights sleep! The private bath was an expected treat, as some b&b do not have private bathes. We awoke to a wonderful breakfast, which Jaynie had prepared herself, and not only was it delicious, it was so elegantly presented! Jaynie and Tom were a sweet, endearing couple that anyone would enjoy spending time with:) Also, their lab, Blanche, was very sweet, never even heard her bark! The view, towards the sound, is simply breathtaking! You won't be disappointed!

Extraordinary house, beautiful surroundings and warm and gracious hosts

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I have visited Mulberry Hill Inn twice in the last two years. Mulberry Hill Inn is a jewel. The elegant and historic home, the beautiful setting and the warm and gracious hosts all contributed to making our time at Mulberry Hill Inn a fantastic and unique experience. From viewing Albemarle Sound while eating a scrumptious breakfast to being regaled by the charming hosts with fascinating stories of local history as we enjoyed wine and cheese, there were many magical moments. Of course, exploring the town of Edenton, with its rich colonial history and beautiful architecture, is a treat.
We look forward to returning to the lovely Mulberry Hill Inn. It is such an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Owner's Response: What a wonderful treat it was for us to have this very attractive couple return, after their visit a year ago. We loved seeing them again and their guests, who made it even a greater pleasure for us. It is such fun to have guests, like them, who enjoy the history of this area, which has also been "The Best Kept Secret in the State!" They also loved the fact that Nagshead is only a hour from here and is a very pleasant trip for lunch or for dinner! Colombia, North Carolina and Creswell are two small atmospheric towns on the way and have very good restaurants, as well as the historic home called SOMERSET PLANTATION, which is fascinating to tour. They also enjoyed touring the beautiful HOPE PLANTATION, just outside of Edenton and eating at Bunn's Bar-be-que, which we always recommend for lovers of bar-be-que! Norfolk and Virginia Beach are two other destinations, which take a little over an hour from Mulberry Hill. One can also take a tour of the DISMAL SWAMP, one of the famous areas, surveyed by George Washington!

Five stars! This is a fantastic setting for a relaxing weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I, and another couple, arrived at the Mulberry Hill Inn for a weekend getaway and were in awe of the stately brick plantation house with majestic magnolias and sweeping lawn down to the Albemarle Sound. The owners were charming and within minutes we were completely relaxed and enjoying the view from the back porch. The interior's beautiful antique furnishings and art creates the feel of gracious living of an earlier era. The bedrooms are huge and comfortable! A scrumptious breakfast was served in the elegant dining room with a view of the Sound. The owners' extensive knowledge of the area helped us plan our trip. The historic town of Edenton and other sites were only a few minutes drive from Mulberry Hill Inn. We recommend both Bistro 309 and Waterman's for dinner.

Owner's Response: We enjoyed so much reuniting with one of the couples, who came to stay with us and also meeting their friends. We had donated Mulberry Hill for a weekend for a fund raiser for Saint Mary's School! It was a fun-filled weekend, as the couples were so appreciative of the historical value of this early Georgian home and of the town of Edenton, which has a reputation for being the "Prettiest Little Town in the South!" Our time here has consisted of focusing on the complete renovation of this early architectural mansion, with its old kitchen and smoke house. We have, at this time, completely fixed up everything, including new counters and cabinets in the kitchen, as well as in the bathrooms, just in time for three weddings this fall! We invite you to come and stay here for, not only the beauty of this area, but, also a history lesson on this area, where many of the Nations's early founders thrived-- as well as enjoying the amenities here, including golfing, tennis, swimming, biking or just relaxing in front of the 55" television and watching Downton Abey! Included in the collection at Mulberry Hill, which houses mainly period antiques---some of the collection displayed create a wonderful nostalgic atmosphere, along with an extensive book collection for enjoyable reading!

Wedding location

  • 1 of 5
If you use Mulberry Hill, be sure to get an agreement/contract in writing. The owner arrived during wedding festivities, arms crossed, and demanded more money. There was a great deal of dog hair in the house and the kitchen had to be cleaned before the family felt comfortable using the facility.

Owner's Response: We have just received a somewhat critical review concerning our bed and breakfast inn, near the Town of Edenton. It is unfortunate that there were misunderstandings on the part of the very attractive, wedding couple and ourselves. It appears that we mistakenly thought that they were going to have a tent erected between our house and the sound for their one hundred wedding guests; and that they were going to provide their own portable bathroom facilities. They were very honest in telling us after their arrival that they had not budgeted for these expenses; and we allowed to use them to use our dining room for their pre-wedding rehearsal dinner, on Friday night. We, also, let all of their guests use our indoor bathroom facilities on Saturday during and after their wedding. We liked the couple very much. The families of both the bride and groom stayed in our bedrooms for two nights at a reasonable rate, compared to other wedding venues in our area. Our 18th century Mulberry Hill manor house, a NATIONAL REGISTRY treasure, is a Georgian architecture masterpiece. Located on a seven acre yard, with sweeping views of the Albemarle Sound and a golf course provides an exceptional experience. Mulberry Hill is a venue, particularly suitable for lovers of history, given the fact that its earliest owner was a signer of the EDENTON TEA PARTY RESOLVES, the first recognized political action by women in America. This same, Ann Hall Blount, it has been said, often entertained her nephew, Confederate General James Johnston Pettigrew at Mulberry Hill. We invite you to spend evenings in our beautifully-restored home among period furnishings in a house recognized for its distinctive architecture by Wendell Garrett in his book, CLASSIC AMERICA, by SOUTHERN LIVING MAGAZINE (Christmas issue, 1984) and by National best-selling author, Inglis Fletcher in her CAROLINA SERIES.

A step into the past

  • 5 of 5
It was a real treat to stay in a lovely home built in the 1700's full of antiques set in spacious rooms that over look the sound. After a great breakfast, one can play golf, visit historic Edenton, or just enjoy a leisurely day on this wonderful eastern North Carolina property. It is a chance to see the way it was.

Singular Experience!

  • 5 of 5
The Mulberry Hill experience is one that is SURE to charm. The hosts are warm, engaging and very knowledgeable about the area. Their love for the surrounding history and dedication to the preservation of this historic, family home is evident and each guest is welcomed just as early Carolina visitors were given hospitality in the 18th century! Every detail, from the heirloom room furnishings to the delicious breakfast served in the beautifully period set dining room is a treat to all the senses...and especially to the sense of connection with our rich heritage in Colonial America. Edenton is only a few miles away and full of fascinating history. We would love to share this experience with other friends in the future and whatever you do, don't miss taking a morning cup of coffee outside on the lawn and soak in the sights, sounds and invigorating breeze of the Albemarle Sound.
