FAMILY BEACH HOUSE

Bolinas House Rental Photos and Description

2 + bedrooms, 2 bathrooms sleeps 4-6

This comfortable home is located across the street from the beautiful Bolinas Lagoon as it empties from Mt Tamalpais into the Pacific Ocean just a short block away. Nestled below a wooded and private hillside this Mediterranean style house is set behind a large hedge hidden from the street. A great base for bird watching, mountain biking, hiking, surfing, kayaking (walk across the street to put in at the small dock), or mosey down the block to the beach to look for seashells, watch the seals play in the surf or make a sandcastle. Known for locally grown/ raised organic food and freshly caught fish, and with a cafe, museum and Wildlife Gallery with our local bird expert down the street, you have sophisticated city amenities in a small beach town. One of only a handful of homes located in this historic part of downtown where the fishing boats still come in on the tides, it is a great spot for fun, family gatherings, or quiet reflective moments.

more: The house is one of two structures on the property. There is also a small cottage at the rear of the property occupied by a part-time tenant/caretaker. However, the yard, parking area, etc. is for the exclusive use of guests. The backyard has a picnic table + several outdoor tables and a park like feeling facing the wooded hillside. Sheltered from the wind with great afternoon sun and with lots of hummingbird visitors, it is a great spot for sharing meals or just hanging out.

A little bit of everything = PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
This place is an ideal getaway spot. Halfway between the beach and town, it is a quick wander to get your feet in the ocean, or grab a bite in town, without the noise of either. The house feels clean and updated, but holds on to some of the funkiness one associates with Bolinas. The bedroom layout was ideal for us (a couple and one kid), and we easily could have added another couple who were willing to be cozy. Also a bonus is the driveway parking spot behind a gate, especially for a busy summer weekend. Everything about this experience was seamless and simple... highly recommend!

Lovely home in Bolinas

  • 5 of 5
The location couldn't be better for a weekend in Bolinas. The house is delightfully annotated -- there's a note on every possible thing that could need an explanation. It was cozy and friendly and we had a lovely time there.

Lovely house next to the beach

  • 4 of 5
The house was clean and had all the amenities we needed. The kids enjoyed the bunk beds and a few toys that were out. My 8-yr-old spent hours collecting shells from the beach. We all rented wet suits and boogie boarded even though the temp was only 60 degrees out and the water was chilly. We had a blast anyway!

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us and for letting us know how it went. Glad you had fun despite the fog - the coast can be chilly even in the summer but always beautiful, we think. The fog can be much appreciated when the temp hits 90+ degrees inland as it will this weekend. Hope you got to see the egrets and herons nesting in the trees across the way. The babies are quite noisy. Happy to hear that the kids enjoyed the bunk room with its 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea motif. And as you may have noticed we have quite a collection of sea shells of our own. Thanks again, Sherry

Wonderful weekend

  • 5 of 5
The house is practically perfect. Our daughters (ages 5, 7, and 9) adored having breakfast at the little table in the kitchen area where they could watch the birds at the bird feeder. The kitchen is well-appointed; next time we visit we plan to make more meals here rather than relying on the one restaurant in town (which is nice and a very short walk away; the market is next to the restaurant). The master bedroom has a cozy study attached. My daughters enjoyed the "Diving Bell" bedroom with its bunkbeds and the sunroom with the trundle bed. They also enjoyed finding all of the little notes around the house that explained how to use different appliances (very useful for grown-ups too). This house was a great base for us as we were lucky to have nice weather for playing on the beach, collecting seashells, and going on hikes (we recommend the Alamere Falls hike!).

what a gem

  • 5 of 5
What a gem of a house. Staying on the Lagoon side of Bolinas is a real treat, view the birds and tide changes right from the living room! Plenty of space for our party of five (four adults one infant), a really nice layout and furnishings, and the kitchen is spacious with high quality appliances and knives making cooking really enjoyable. And hanging out in the sunny breakfast nook while watching the birds at the feeder was a great way to start the day. Close walk to everything.

The owners were very helpful and friendly. There was a storm the night before so they gave us a nice heads-up in the morning letting us know the power may out in town. It came back on before we arrived but that kind of courteous service is always appreciated.

We will be back!

Owner's Response: We love watching the birds and the tides also. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and that the weather cooperated after that big wind we had. Thank you so much!

A world apart

  • 5 of 5
The house was everything the pictures promised. More than big enough for a family of 5, it still had a nice cozy feeling. Just around the bend from "downtown" Bolinas and a short walk to the beach, it is ideally located. The garden out back is very nice and a great place to relax.
The town of Bolinas is a world apart from the rest of the area. With a bit of a "hippie" feeling it's almost like stepping back in time. Everything you need is located right in rown and we also found it to be a great location for day trips to SF, Napa and Sonoma Valleys and Sausalito. (For trips to SF, it's best to park in Sausalito and take the ferry.)
Sherry, the owner, provided plenty of information and great tips on what to do and where to go. Though we only communicated via email, it felt more like staying at a friend's house than renting from a stranger.
We had a wonderful time and the house was a great vacation value.

Car: recommended

One short block from Bolinas Beach and steps away from the Bolinas Lagoon as it empties from the flanks of Mt Tamalpais into the Pacific Ocean, you are approximately 25 miles north of San Francisco. Although there is much to do and see in our small west Marin village, you are well situated for visits to the City and to the Sonoma and Napa wine country. Located at the southern tip of the Pt. Reyes National Seashore, north of Muir Woods, west of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Mt Tam, with the ebb and flow of the tides nearby, you are surrounded by the natural wonders of this region. Once you arrive, you can park your car and walk to shop or enjoy the beach and hills of the area. There is a regular although infrequent bus service via West MarinTransit on the 'Stagecoach' to the town with routes to connections with transit centers 'over the hill' as well as to Stinson Beach.

The house has an efficient wood burning stove, electric heaters and gas wall heater in winter. Wood floors + several area rugs, few dust collecting fabrics and no animals, help keep it a low allergen environment. Dish TV w. 250 channels for sports fans. House is 'downtown' near the beach and stores with a parking area inside the gate. Once inside the gate, behind the big front hedge, the house has a very private feel with a wooded hillside at the rear and surrounded by garden greenery. The house is one story, with 3 & 4 steps into the structure. A concrete sidewalk is at the entry and side going to the rear with some flagstone patio areas and the wood deck. An outdoor shower and clothesline available for post beach clean up. Picnic table w. benches plus other tables and chairs for outdoor use. There is a small cottage at the rear of the property occupied by a part-time tenant/caretaker, however the yard, parking, etc is for the exclusive use of guests. Sorry, no pets, please.
