Spacious studio rooms 110 sqm., super-size Jacuzzi by large mirror wall.

With a growing reputation worldwide, travelers from all corners of the world are drawn to the blissful retreat of Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa to be embraced by the surrounding lush hills and inspired by nature.

A trickling waterfall cascades through the resort, offering an unforgettable experience that begs to be undertaken at least once in a lifetime.

Tales of Sukantara's boundless tranquility have fueled word of mouth recommendations amongst well-heeled travelers who seek a unique natural hideaway in an absolute state of purity.

Resort guests come from various walks of life, ranging from senior executives at multinational companies, to business entrepreneurs, sultans, and even Hollywood royalty, including like Angelina Jolie.

In addition, Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa has won recognition from prestigious media worldwide, including a spot in the “Five Best Hotels by Waterfalls” featured in The Independent newspaper.

The resort was also honored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as one of the “Best Paradise Hotels in Thailand” in its Unseen Paradise campaign. From the moment guests arrive at the reception area, they are welcomed by the soothing sight and trickling sound of the waterfall just beyond.

As the water rolls over the boulders, it sprinkles the air with a refreshing mist that gently floats down to caress the skin.

In addition to the sensory treat, negative ions add a health bonus for our guests. Such molecules are most concentrated around waterfalls and well known to promote overall health through the neutralization of free radicals in cells and revitalization of the body's systems.

During a visit by a renowned Chinese feng shui master, he commented on the orientation of the buildings in relation to the natural environs — an energy flow which he terms “Mouth of a Dragon”. This positioning means guests will receive a positive energy boost, promoting success and prosperity.

Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa is undeniably a romantic retreat that enhances the passion between two lovers.

The pervading charm of the resort has also been known to kindle love between two souls. A former European ambassador to Thailand not only fell in love with the Lanna culture, but fulfilled his destiny and also fell in love with a local lady from Chiang Mai at Sukantara.

To this day, the couple still frequently return to Sukantara as our special guests, bringing along their friends and their loved ones, who in turn bring their families — and so the love story continues.

Many couples have sought out Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa as the venue for their dream wedding and honeymoon. The cascade provides the perfect backdrop for the big day, and the romance of the resort creates unforgettable memories.

The resort restaurant, swimming pool, spa, and common areas are positioned to take advantage of the spellbinding vistas of the waterfall and surrounding forest.

Dinner can be enjoyed at the restaurant next to the waterfall – a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. The menu features authentic Lanna recipes handed down by our grandmothers and sumptuously prepared for a true culinary adventure.

In the evenings, the soundtrack of the bubbling waters, interspersed with the the peacocks calling out to each other, combine to make up the unique experience that is Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa.

The design concept of Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa was based on working with the existing terrain, leaving a minimal footprint on the landscape and conserving as many trees as possible. As a result, the guest rooms and suites are nestled in and around existing trees and surrounding foliage.

Active guests will be spoilt for choice when staying at Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa.

The most luxurious room in the Panorama wing are the Panorama Suite, which are situated on the upper floor of the buildings. These large suites feature tall windows that wrap around the front and side, looking out over treetops and down across the lush valley as far as the eye can see.

The interiors of the Panorama Suites are designed in a Royal Lanna style, with captivating elements such as gilded beams with gold leaf in traditional patterns.

At the break of dawn, sunlight flickers through the stained windows, and upon finding the gilded patterns, speckles the interiors with a magical glow.

Panorama Suite guests can take an extended soak in the large private Jacuzzi positioned next to the window, sip on a glass of wine and listen to the birds chirping just outside. If you look closely, you just might see the small Asian hummingbirds flitting through the treetops.

One of the most popular activities is exploring the surrounding wonders of nature and a well marked trail meanders through the forest leading to a national park, while the main “Taad Mok Waterfall” is just one kilometer away by car.

The hiking path starts at the suspension bridge, and once you reach the opposite bank, the walkway joins with a trail that the local Karen hill tribe villagers regularly trek to forage in the forest, where they dig for bamboo shoots, look for mushrooms, find orchids, and collect honey.

The walk takes about one and a half hours roundtrip, which as experienced forest trekkers will tell you, is not a strenuous hike.

For guests who would rather take a more leisurely walk with multiple pitstops to enjoy the view, just 15 minutes by foot is a cliff viewpoint where the sun sets against a backdrop of lush green rice paddies. Lining the trail are a plethora of natural wonders which vie for attention and admiration, including colorful wild flowers, orchids, and other rare plants. The ongoing forest conservation efforts also mean exotic wild birds are still in abundance.

Along the forest path, a patch of bamboo forest flanking both sides of the trail forms a picturesque photo opportunity. The tips of the bamboo clusters gently lean inwards to form a symmetrical arch as if to welcome an auspicious ceremony.

Walking under the captivating bamboo arches, just as guests may start to feel the first tinges of weariness, a refreshing mist announces arrival at the main “Taad Mok Waterfall”.

Any inklings of tiredness will instantaneously float way with the mist. Like a proud conqueror standing at the highest point of a cliff, guests can lean out and admire the cascade tumbling 20 meters down onto the rocks below and snaking off in a clear stream.

Another favorite pastime of guests at Sukantara Cascade Resort is indulging in the resort's Chiida Spa. The unique atmosphere is created by housing the spa rooms in “sala” pavilion built in the traditional Thai Tewalai architectural style, with large antique wooden doors, intricately carved by artisans from the ancient kingdom of Gandhara in what is now the city of Peshawar in Pakistan.

Once guests pass through the doors into the healing sanctuary, a range of treatments await with herbal formulas specifically created to rejuvenate the skin and restore vitality. In recognition of the high standards provided to guests, Chiida Spa was awarded a prestigious gold award from the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Delighting even the most well-heeled and experienced spa-goers, Sukantara's Chiida Spa remains committed to provide a holistic wellness experience that is yet to be duplicated elsewhere.

Sukantara Resort is located in Mae Rim district in Chiang Mai, a popular tourist destination offering varied attractions and adventures.

Guests have myriad activities they can partake in depending on their preferences. Family excursions include a trip to Mae Sa Elephant Camp to ride the large gentle giants who also show off their artistic skills in painting, children can also enjoy monkey and crocodile shows, or visit Tiger Kingdom to get up close with the regal beasts.

Other leisure activities include a stroll around Queen Sirikit Garden, the biggest national sprawling botanic park in Thailand, or visitors can learn about the region's indigenous flora and fauna at the orchid and butterfly farms.

Golfers can head to the nearby Summit Green Valley Country Club which features a 18-hole, par-72 golf course. For active guests looking for a bit more adventure, ATV driving, horse riding, shooting, paintball, and go-karting are all available year-round.

Another attraction situated just two kilometers from Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa and recently opened is the Eagle Track Zipline, an eco-friendly activity which offers the chance to glide in a harness high above the treetops. 20 minutes further into the hills by car, before you reach the Hmong Nong Hoi Royal Project, the viewpoint known as Mon Jam provides a sweeping vantage point 1,300 feet above sea level.

A thousand tales and recommendations cannot compare to experiencing Sukantara Cascade Resort & Spa first hand.

The waterfall resort is located along Mae Rim-Samoeng Road, a convenient 35 minute drive from Chiang Mai International Airport but a world away in terms of natural character and atmosphere.

On a past visit to Sukantara, the former governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand once exclaimed “Isn't it wonderful that we have a resort like this in Thailand?”

Sukantara Cascade Resort was founded in 2004 by Khun Somporn Sugunasil, a former executive at one of the top two banks in Thailand. As a local from Chiang Mai, an innate appreciation of nature stayed with him from birth and where the resort now stands was formerly his private residence.

On a quiet day after his retirement, while sipping on a glass of wine next to the waterfall, an idea came to him. “We have here surroundings that are amazing,” he thought. “Wouldn't it be even better if we could share this with people from around the world?”

Hence the seed was sown for what would become Sukantara Cascade Resort.

The “boss father” also requested that the design incorporate the essences of Lanna culture, a way of life which he credits for making him into the man he is today.

For decades, Khun Somporn had been a major supporter of the local Buddhist Thais and Christian Karen hill tribe villagers. When his resort idea was born, the community offered their full support and collaboration for the project.

Through the awareness and preservation of surrounding nature, the local villagers have been able to increase their knowledge, widen their horizons, and gain a long-term perspective, thus empowering them with the tools to develop their own communities.

As a sign of love and respect, the local villagers nicknamed Khun Sompong “por nai”, an affectionate name literally meaning “boss father”.

The local villagers remain the main heart and soul of the resort, as well as supporting continuing forest conservation efforts. They also provide service with a smile and offer rare Lanna sincerity, making guests feel truly welcome and part of the Sukantara family.
