Gene and I live in Portland Oregon. We first came to Kulakane for our honeymoon in 1987 and we came back over and over, until finally we bought our own home here. We still love it and treasure our weeks in Maui every year. Gene is a health educator in Portland and I am a Realtor selling homes.
Becky Jackson purchased this condo in 2001
It is our honeymoon home :)
What we love most is that our condo is right on the water, facing the ocean and steps away from a beach walk. We like being on the second floor for privacy and security. We would not want to spend our precious days in Paradise anywhere but ocean/beach front. Why else be here. We visit the large resorts nearby for cocktails and dinner sometimes, and gladly return to our smaller, more intimate and ocean accessible condo that puts us right on the water. That ocean proximity is what we come for first and foremost!
Had a great stay at the Kulakane. The nice part about the location is that it is friendly and warm without the full-on resort tourist feel you might get at another location. Also really nice to have a condo with all the amenities. The ocean view is second to none as you feel you are right on the water. Tons of access to shopping and food. The beach is a short walk and if you drive you can be at even better ones. My only complaint would be about the quality of the unit itself. While fine, it is not glamorous. The entire community seems frozen in time and throws you back to an old school Elvis-Sinatra hawaii feel. That being said, Debbie is an awesome property manager and the condo owners form an awesome community. Everybody seems like they just love living every single day.
Thank you for sharing your home. It was a great stay
-Easy booking, checking in and out. Debbie was great. Everything was delivered as promised. I love the board in front of the office welcoming our family--made us feel special
-Absolutely gorgeous ocean view. I can relax on that lanai forever. It was nice & comfortable. We had breakfast and lunch there almost every day. Love that we can spot turtles every day from our 2nd floor lanai while eating lunch. I'm officially now spoiled and would not want to stay anywhere else that is not an ocean view.
-Comfy bedroom, nice kitchen
-nice little pool to cool down and for the kid to waddle
-the beach was a little bit rocky but there is a great public beach near by
-Great location--right next to the public beach (my son love playing in the sand/water during low tide and the playground.); next to the farmer market (which was alright-not much selection to buy), near the supermarket (but we end up driving to Safeway b/c of familarity and prices seem to be lower @ Safeway)
-Everything as described/promised online
-The only thing was it was a little bit hard finding the items in the condo--ie we didn't see the condiments (sugar) and went out & bought some. The cabinet was not in the area we would expected. I couldn't find a hair dryer until almost the end of my trip (didn't really need it that much anyway).
Aloha! We are here now as I type this review from the lanai of unit. The pictures are exactly what you get when you come to this condo. We, like the owners will not ever stay anywhere in Maui that is not directly ocean front. We love the sound of the crashing waves to lull us to sleep at night and this unit does not disappoint. Just because the bedroom is in the back of the unit, do not assume you will not hear the surf, it can be heard loud and clear!
The complex is very well maintained with lush plants and flowers, we especially like the BBQ area that has many potted plants and an herb garden for use in cooking.
The parking lot and back of the complex is right on the street but thus far we have not been bothered by any street noise whatsoever.
The ceiling fans in the unit cool things nicely, as a matter of fact when it gets warm on the lanai in the late afternoon it is still nice and cool inside.
This unit is comfy, clean, quaint and nicely decorated. It has not had a major upscale renovation but is still really nice, and I am pretty picky!
The Friday night pupu's and cocktails with other residents was fun. Everyone brings a dish and their own drink. It was certainly enough for us for dinner.
The owners and staff are very responsive and nice. When we arrived, on the board at the office was a sign welcoming my husband and I and wishing us happy anniversary. There was also a bottle of champagne waiting inside, personalized with a label with our names on it and a box of macadamia nut Caramacs! What nice personal touches that have made our stay so wonderful!
The condo is very close to shopping, Times market and the Farmers Market health food store (which also has an outdoor farmers market MW&F mornings). It is also close to the fish market and deli which both get high marks for their wonderful fish.
Just up the road 5 or so minutes is Napili bay and to the south is Kaanapali (8-10 minutes) which has every kind of restaurant and shopping you could want.
Overall this is a wonderful place for 2, for us it would be a bit small for any more but then again we spend a lot of time in the condo......or actually on the lanai watching the water.
Speaking of the water, we have seen so much whale activity we are amazed. This morning a juvenile did 42 tail slaps in a row only stopping twice for air.....what a treat. We have also seen many, many breaches and I cant leave out the turtles that come right up to the sea wall just mere feet away and stay for hours. Aloha!
