Widely travelled Los Angeles couple who love Hawaii and Mauna Kea.
Lynn P. Swank purchased this house in 2011
We have travelled to Mauna Kea for thirty years and finally decided to purchase a home at the resort. It is a special place to relax and enjoy the best of Hawaii.
Behind the gates at the resort. A brief walk to the beach or a two minute drive with priority parking at either the Mauna Kea or Hapuna hotels. You will have guest privileges at both hotels, including beach, pool, and gym privileges.
Lovely, spacious home & courtyard. Best view of ocean, many whales, & 4 volcanoes!
Loved having the kitchen so we didn't have to leave for meals. Pool was so nice on those hot afternoons. My favorite part is the "grove" of trees & bushes next door, by the outdoor shower. So beautiful, private, comfortable. Great Sonos sound system. Just a couple mins. Drive down to Mauna Kea's fabulous soft sand beach & good snorkeling. Hated to leave. Housekeeper Rachel is a gem, & Lynn was so easy to work with. Mahalo!
We stayed in the home for just over a week. The house is as nice as shown and the view is beautiful. we have rented a number of homes from VRBO and this one was one of the most well supplied homes we have stayed in. The house is large and very comfortable. This was our first visit to Hawaii and we found the location convienient. The owners were great to work with and very acoomodating. We would definitely return. If you are here over the 4th of July it is a great location to watch the fireworks.
This was our second visit so we were familiar with all the features of this house. The interior has everything including a fabulous view and living quarters which once again have everything necessary as a home away from home. However when we visit Hawaii we want to spend all of our time outdoors and this is where the house is outstanding. It has eating areas , sitting areas, sunning areas, relaxing areas all of which have fabulous views in addition to a well maintained pool for swimming. One of the best areas in on a back terrace which has two rocking chairs. One of us is elderly and this house is great because it is all one one level..
we have already made reservations for a return visit
We arrived in the evening only to find we could not open doors with keys provided. Had to call resort security for assistance in entering the home. Next morning I got up and went into kitchen to make coffee, and there was a mouse. Looked around and found mouse droppings everywhere. Horrified by the mice, I went to store and bought D-Con. Not what I wanted to find in our rental and totally ruined the time staying there. Property needs major updating and cleaning.
i don't like to complain about rental houses. i've rented just under 50 places from vrbo and other rental sites and always stay at rental houses or condos for vacations. i don't expect perfection and i think i've only had something negative to say about one other place. we've rented 8 homes in the manua kea area and this house would be at the bottom of the list.
when we arrived at the house, the pool was full of debris. it was basically usable. there had been high winds in the area but this pool had not been cleaned in a while. the pool guy showed up the next day and the pool was fine thereafter. the kitchen a/c unit did not work. the a/c repairman called a few days later but we elected to not get involved with a repair project. we found mouse droppings everywhere and began to see mice just running around the house. it was sort of like a mouse rodeo. there was a mouse problem in north kohala and that is a factor but we had never seen a mouse in another house. the exterminator showed up and in the first 12 hours, we had 10 mice in glue traps, it was more a case of running out of traps than running out of mice. finally, the bathroom toilet off the kitchen broke.
outside of the series of problems, this house is in serious need of updating. the floors, bathrooms and kitchen all need a full makeover. in the most basic sense and at a bare minimum, the entire interior needs painting and basic maintenance.
on the plus side, the view is great and the yard is very nice. the owners were responsive to all the problems but frankly, i do not expect to arrive at a relatively expensive property and have to deal with a series of issues. no one goes to hawaii to wait for repairmen or exterminators. having stayed at numerous other homes in the mauna kea property, i can say with complete confidence that there are many better places to spend your vacation.
This house was the perfect setting for a much needed vacation. The house was clean, comfortable and had every amenity you could possibly imagine. The pool, stunning view and resort member benefits made it even more special. We had four adults and three children (all under age 5) and the house gave us plenty of space to move around, yet enjoy our time together. The owners had a high chair and pack n play already set up for us which was fabulous after a long trip! We already miss the sunsets and glorious Mauna Kea beach. We will be back for sure!
