Unbelievable home & view!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, spacious home & courtyard. Best view of ocean, many whales, & 4 volcanoes!

Loved having the kitchen so we didn't have to leave for meals. Pool was so nice on those hot afternoons. My favorite part is the "grove" of trees & bushes next door, by the outdoor shower. So beautiful, private, comfortable. Great Sonos sound system. Just a couple mins. Drive down to Mauna Kea's fabulous soft sand beach & good snorkeling. Hated to leave. Housekeeper Rachel is a gem, & Lynn was so easy to work with. Mahalo!

Aloha . . .

We stayed in the home for just over a week. The house is as nice as shown and the view is beautiful. we have rented a number of homes from VRBO and this one was one of the most well supplied homes we have stayed in. The house is large and very comfortable. This was our first visit to Hawaii and we found the location convienient. The owners were great to work with and very acoomodating. We would definitely return. If you are here over the 4th of July it is a great location to watch the fireworks.

rental 364406 at the Mauna Kea

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit so we were familiar with all the features of this house. The interior has everything including a fabulous view and living quarters which once again have everything necessary as a home away from home. However when we visit Hawaii we want to spend all of our time outdoors and this is where the house is outstanding. It has eating areas , sitting areas, sunning areas, relaxing areas all of which have fabulous views in addition to a well maintained pool for swimming. One of the best areas in on a back terrace which has two rocking chairs. One of us is elderly and this house is great because it is all one one level..

we have already made reservations for a return visit

Rental 364406

We arrived in the evening only to find we could not open doors with keys provided. Had to call resort security for assistance in entering the home. Next morning I got up and went into kitchen to make coffee, and there was a mouse. Looked around and found mouse droppings everywhere. Horrified by the mice, I went to store and bought D-Con. Not what I wanted to find in our rental and totally ruined the time staying there. Property needs major updating and cleaning.

Owner's Response: We do not have a record of this guest for the stated review date of the stay, so we are not sure if this is a valid review. We do recall a guest from this time who had to reschedule a reservation, which we did, and whom we accommodated on short notice and returned a reservation deposit that normally would have been forfeited. That guest arrived late and was unable to open the door with the key provided. Security used that key to open the door. It is the same key all guests use to enter the house. It is the same key this guest used for the duration of the stay. No one before or since has had a problem with the key. We cannot explain why it did not work on that one occasion. We stayed in the house the week before we believe this guest arrived. We had to prepare for the arrival of a long-term guest in January, so all rooms, closets and drawers had to be rearranged and/or emptied. We did not see any mice or evidence of mice during this process or we would have immediately called our the regular exterminator. The house was cleaned thoroughly by housekeeping the day before this guests' arrival--the day after we left. We are sorry the guest saw evidence of a mouse in the kitchen, but we are relieved that the guest never saw a mouse. We do have geckos that visit and leave markings. The house sits among acres of open space. There is wildlife, including mongooses, turkeys, other birds, geckos, and mice. There are occasional geckos in the house--as there are in every structure in Hawaii. Perhaps the guest was confused by the type of scat she saw. 6 months is a long time to wait to complain about keys and mice and not helpful to us, especially since there was no communication between the supposed guests and us, either by email or phone during this 6 month time period. Had we known at the time, rather than six months after the stay, we might have been able to take some action.

not up to the level of the competition

i don't like to complain about rental houses. i've rented just under 50 places from vrbo and other rental sites and always stay at rental houses or condos for vacations. i don't expect perfection and i think i've only had something negative to say about one other place. we've rented 8 homes in the manua kea area and this house would be at the bottom of the list.

when we arrived at the house, the pool was full of debris. it was basically usable. there had been high winds in the area but this pool had not been cleaned in a while. the pool guy showed up the next day and the pool was fine thereafter. the kitchen a/c unit did not work. the a/c repairman called a few days later but we elected to not get involved with a repair project. we found mouse droppings everywhere and began to see mice just running around the house. it was sort of like a mouse rodeo. there was a mouse problem in north kohala and that is a factor but we had never seen a mouse in another house. the exterminator showed up and in the first 12 hours, we had 10 mice in glue traps, it was more a case of running out of traps than running out of mice. finally, the bathroom toilet off the kitchen broke.

outside of the series of problems, this house is in serious need of updating. the floors, bathrooms and kitchen all need a full makeover. in the most basic sense and at a bare minimum, the entire interior needs painting and basic maintenance.

on the plus side, the view is great and the yard is very nice. the owners were responsive to all the problems but frankly, i do not expect to arrive at a relatively expensive property and have to deal with a series of issues. no one goes to hawaii to wait for repairmen or exterminators. having stayed at numerous other homes in the mauna kea property, i can say with complete confidence that there are many better places to spend your vacation.

Owner's Response: Please read our other reviews. In the past 2 years over 50 guests, many staying multiple times, have enjoyed our home. Our manager, (called “a Gem” in reviews), cleaned the house the day prior to the guest’s arrival and the house and pool clean when she left. Upon arrival, the guest reported that the pool was dirty—in his words: “it is windy and there is no way to keep things out of the pool”. The next day the pool was cleaned. The guest admits this resolved his issue. 6 days AFTER arriving, the guest FIRST reported: “we had a bit of a mouse problem” …“mostly in the kitchen but also in the master bath”. We were alarmed and contacted our pest control company and the Gem, and she spoke to the guest’s wife who had not seen any mice inside and also said they left the sliding doors open at night. The Gem asked her to shut the doors to keep mice out. Pest control addressed the issue the following day. This guest would have complained sooner had there been any earlier signs of mice; it is clear from the timing that the guest invited the mice in for six days by leaving doors open. It has been wet in north Kona and there are mice outside. We will advise arriving guests to keep the sliding doors shut at night. The AC in the kitchen did break. This guest knew our air conditioning contractor (“Robert did call, we know him from a previous visit at another house”) from prior complaints made at another rental. The guest asked Robert not to fix the AC, and it was not fixed. It has now been fixed. The toilet handle in the bath adjacent to the kitchen broke when the guest was using it. The guest did not want it fixed when he was there. It has been fixed. It is impossible to anticipate when an AC unit or toilet will fail. There is nothing to do other than to fix it promptly—which the guest refused. The guest’s unhappiness about the wind, conditions he caused, and things that he did not want fixed, and general complaints about the house contradict his statement upon arriving, that the house was “quite comfortable.” The photos on the web page are accurate. The entire house, both inside and outside, has been painted within the last two years. The floor tiles are Franciscan tiles and people like them. The bathrooms are tiled—not marbled. It is bizarre to complain that the house looks like the photos. We want each guest to enjoy a stay at our home and experience and enjoy Hawaii. We still intend to retire to this home and we wish this guest Aloha.

Perfect family vacation!

This house was the perfect setting for a much needed vacation. The house was clean, comfortable and had every amenity you could possibly imagine. The pool, stunning view and resort member benefits made it even more special. We had four adults and three children (all under age 5) and the house gave us plenty of space to move around, yet enjoy our time together. The owners had a high chair and pack n play already set up for us which was fabulous after a long trip! We already miss the sunsets and glorious Mauna Kea beach. We will be back for sure!
