Last summer on our 12th Outer Banks family vacation, we took a chance and booked Sand Joy, after having stayed at the same place (The Quay) for several years. Our family is growing - four teenagers, three parents, and my mother and father-in-law, and we needed a bit more room, and we always want ocean front. When you try a new vacation location, there is always that uncertainty - will the house be nice? Will it be clean? Will everything work? The moment we walked in the door to this cottage, our fears evaporated, and we were in love. If you go to the beach to BE at the BEACH, this amazing cottage will not disappoint. My wife and I were blessed to have the 1st floor bedroom on the ocean side of the house, and there is nothing like awakening each morning to sunrise over the ocean. This cottage has a wonderful vintage vibe to it, and the owners have done a beautiful job with furnishings and decor. It's beautifully beachy without being over the top, or ostentatious. And, speaking of the owners, they are the 3rd generation of original builders/owners. That in itself says a lot about what makes this cottage special. The foyer has a wonderful collection of vintage Nags Head photographs and memorabilia. The furnishings are comfortable and in great condition, the bedrooms are roomy and comfortable, and the kitchen is bright and airy. We usually do about 50% of our dinner out, and 50% in, and we seated and fed nine people comfortably. Our absolute favorite time of the day was cocktail hour on the porch in the evening. The view, and the ocean access are outstanding. Needless to say, we are already booked for this summer (2014). This wonderful cottage is an absolute gem, and we whole-heartedly recommend it.
Our family has been vacationing at this particular cottage for well over 13+ years now. We found this gem by driving around looking for the perfect vacation space. I wanted ocean front since I burn so badly but wanted to be with my beach loving tanning family. I wanted the charm of Nags Head that represents the outer banks. We were lucky that our time slot wad available so we booked it. Not a moments regret plus, we have gained so much more. I wonder how many vacationers can say that they look forward to coming back year after year and wouldn't think of going anywhere else. That is how we feel about this place. We love the experience, the people, the location, how well the property is maintained, & how relaxed we become being here. I love to sit on the rockers on the wrap around porch drinking coffee and watching the sun rise, the dolphins feed, & my most beloved pelicans. My husband can check how fishing is going by just looking at Nags Head pier. My son goes scuba diving around the wreck and my grandson (his mom has to work) is learning to love the beach more and more each year. This cottage brings us back to life every year. You won't regret staying here.

I have stayed in this quaint and yet very comfortable beach house many times over the past 16 years or so, and every time I walk through its sweet back door, I feel like I am coming home. The house's amentities have increased over the years -- from no A/C to central A/C; installation of a new refrigerator and stove, new blinds, new furniture, new plumbing and fixtures, and other modernizations. In spite of all these "improvements," the cottage -- we know it as the "San-Joy" -- has held onto all of its charm and all of its magic. The rainbow-hued rockers that face the sea are still there; the knotty pine paneling (which I adore) has remained (thank God!) and has taken on the patina and darkness and shine only age and good care can bring. The layout of the cottage is friendly and perfect for small groups or families. The owner's family live quite nearby and, although they are not required to do so, have consistently been the type of folks you would like to find living next door when you get home from the Outer Banks -- kind, adorable, down-to-earh, excellent conversationalists, and, well, neighborly. One time they brought us a jar of flowers, another time a basket of home-grown veggies, once a bottle of wine, once a clutch of homemade blueberry muffins.
This is not the beach house for those who crave the Malibu-style behemoths you find upbeach in Corolla -- there is no swimming pool, no whirlpool tub, no billards table, no granite counters or walk-in wine cooler. What it is, though, is comfortable, sweet, delightful, and absolutely, unequivocably PERFECT. I like to write and talk in culinary terms, so let me put it like this: the San-Joy is the Aunt Sally's Deviled Eggs to those billionaire-built beach houses' blinis with cavier, the buttermilk fried chicken to those other houses' Lobster Thermidor, the homemade wild blueberry pie to those other places' Parisian financiers. And unless you're into sensory overload at what is already one of the most wonderful of natural environments, the seashore (Why the heck would you need an 80" hi-def LED TV at the beach, where you can look out your window and see THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OCEAN IN THE WORLD?), the San-Joy is, really, all you could ever need or want.
