We are the Jernigans. Our extended family has owned and operated Renwick House since 1978, along with several other family-owned rental properties. Grandpa and Grandma raised the family in Alexandria, VA, and we all currently reside in the Washington, DC area and the San Francisco, CA area.
The Jernigan Family purchased this farmhouse in 1978
Our family purchased the 29-acre property in 1978 from a Bar Harbor resident named George Renwick (hence the name 'Renwick House'). The house was built in the 1860's and sits on a beautiful piece of land conveniently near Bar Harbor but away from the bustle of town.
- 1/2 Mile walk to Acadia National Park (1 mile to Thunder Hole, 2 miles to Sand Beach)
- 4.5 Miles to downtown Bar Harbor
- Gorgeous sunsets over the back meadow
My wife, 3 year old, 2 year old, and in-laws stayed at the Renwick House and loved it. It is a perfect location for families to enjoy Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor without the noise and traffic of staying in town. The access to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Great Head, Gorham Mtn, Champlain Mtn, and Otter Cliffs is very easy. I would highly recommend this house to climbers, runners, and cyclists who want to be in the park without much hassle. It is also perfect for families. The house is well maintained and very unique. However, those not used to old farmhouses should understand that it is not a luxury condominium, it is a very clean, well-maintained, beautiful farm house. The back yard has incredible sunsets and plenty of room to run around for the kids. The on-property trail around the meadow is gorgeous. There is a rustic cabin with a twin bed and a bathroom that is perfect for bringing a guest, family member, friend, etc. We have already booked the Renwick House for next year.
Renwick house was an amazing and relaxing vacation. I went for a long weekend with my boyfriend and wish we had stayed a week or even two. The picture perfect town of Bar Harbour has tons of shopping, dining, and activities and Acadia provides endless outdoor possibilities. Truly a wonderfully historic house that has been well kept. Makes for fun filled yet relaxing "getaway" for anyone!
My family has stayed many times in the past 10 years and we love the location of Renwick House. Not only is it private and peaceful, but the free shuttle bus to Acadia Park and to Bar Harbor stops right at the front door. Renwick is within walking distance of several sections of the Park Loop Road, including Thunder Hole and the sand beach.
Renwick is a very comfortable home with a well stocked kitchen, a lovely large dining room, a wonderful living room with a fireplace, and a relaxing enclosed side porch and open front porch. The bedrooms are very comfortable.
We will be staying for 2 weeks this 2014 because we love it so much.
4.5 miles south of Bar Harbor at 175 Otter Cliff Rd, an easy one mile walk to Acadia National Park (Ocean Drive/ Park Loop Road), near the spectacular Otter Cliffs. Thunder Hole and Sand Beach are within a 1.5 mile walk (7 miles by car). The park boundary is a half mile away, and the house sits by a one-acre field with mountain views and surrounded by our 28 acres of woods.
