House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Enjoy your vacation in this delightful, lovingly renovated vintage island home! Built by settlers in 1908, it embodies the fascinating history of these beautiful San Juan Islands. The house is centrally located in Orcas Island's Eastsound Village -- called one of the most charming travel destinations in America. Fenced yard with lovely landscaping ensures your privacy, while enjoying proximity to all conveniences. This coastal classic is equally appealing for a romantic get-away, or for a gathering of family and friends.

Stroll to Orcas Island's Farmer's Market and barbeque on your deck, or enjoy a meal in one of Eastsound's heralded restaurants offering world-class cuisine. A bookstore and lattes are just around the corner, and whalewatch tours and/or kayak rentals can be arranged nearby. Walk to the public dock just yards away for boating excursions. Watch sunsets, eagles, and the abundant wildlife around Indian Island. Facing southwest, your view includes the bay, shoreline of picturesque Eastsound, and unmatched island sunsets. Only 10 miles from the ferry landing, and 10 miles from majestic Moran State Park and Mt. Constitution, this location is really the perfect hub for your trip.

Four bedrooms offer lots of privacy, with one bedroom on the ground floor and three upstairs. Master bedroom overlooks the gorgeous view. Fully equipped kitchen with all amenities. Large flatscreen TV's in the living room and downstairs bedroom. Enjoy a drink on the deck and absorb the magic of Orcas Island. We look forward to welcoming you!

About Susan Gudgell

We have been on Orcas Island for many decades (in fact Wally grew up here!) so are true islanders. We can suggest not only major travel activites, but little known gems on island backroads. We are raising two daughters here -- no better place in the world!

Susan Gudgell purchased this house in 2006

Why Susan Gudgell chose Eastsound

We have always loved this house as it is an intrinsic architectural element on the charming Eastsound shoreline. We welcomed the opportunity to restore it to its original glory.

What makes this house unique

Sipping coffee or a glass of wine on the deck, breathing in that clear island air, and contemplating the view! We also love wandering around the village, hiking in the Turtleback Mountain Reserve, and exploring Moran State Park. We know many of the restauranteurs in town and love the many delicious varied options for an evening out.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for helping make our first trip to Orcas Island such a pleasant one. The Homestead was a great place to relax and unwind, and the location was perfect for exploring the rest of Orcas. Thanks again and hope to be back in the future!

Yearly trip to Orcas first time at the Homestead

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 4 nights. There were three of us (my hubby and me and a friend) and our two dogs. We stay at Orcas every year over Easter. We usually stay at West Beach resort because they are dog friendly and right on the ocean facing west. This year we could not get our regular cabin and so I started searching for rentals that took dogs.

I want to say first of all how much I appreciate it when I can find a nice property that accepts dogs and is a great place. I wish more pet owner options were available. It was a beautiful old home just around the corner from town so we could take walks every morning to the bakeries (Roses for fabulous bread and Brown Bear for their bear claws). Perfectly situated on the bay with great views of the water. It was nice and clean and very roomy. It has a queen bedroom downstairs along with a bathroom and upstairs had a room with 4 bunk beds, another room with one bed, and the master with a queen bed, sitting area and very roomy. There is also a bathroom upstairs too. Large kitchen with great views of the water, outside deck, a lower patio facing the ocean and a lawn equipped with its very own resident large Easter bunny!

Loved the house. If I had a "wish list" or things that could be improved they would be minor, but here goes. It would have been great if there was an outdoor fire pit whether wood burning or gas so we could have sat out at night. I missed not having that. A couple of chaise lounge chairs on the patio for napping would be great too. It would be nice for the main room upstairs to have a king bed for room, especially with a tall husband. I think the upstairs tub was jetted somehow, but it did not work and there was the slightest musty smell when you turned the corner to go up the second set of stairs. It was faint, but there.

Don't let this deter you as I said this was all minor. I would stay there again in a minute, we had such a great time and it is a beautiful place in a beautiful location. For the 4th of July fireworks you would not have to leave the deck to see the show (assuming they still do fireworks). Thanks again for the enjoyable stay and for being dog friendly!!!!!!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review and great suggestions! We are precluded from wood fires outside due to local fire codes, but love the idea of such an option, so will look into the possibility of a propane fire pit. And lounging chairs in addition to the Adirondack chairs would be a terrific addition. Each year we add elements to enhance the charm and comfort of the house, so these are great ideas. As far as the master bedroom goes, much as we tried, we just could not get a king sized mattress and box spring to fit up the stairwell so are left with a queen bed. And our apologies for the inoperative jets in the tub; we wish we had known so that we could have mitigated this for your stay, but will make sure they were functioning properly on-going. We appreciate your input and hope to welcome you back to the Homestead sometime soon!

Wonderful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The house feels very private, with a beautiful view, but it is very close to grocery store, restaurants, shops in town, and the beach. Our group had four adults and two small children (under 6 years old) and it was perfect. The master bedroom is on the main floor, and all the other bedrooms are upstairs. There are two fireplaces, room to play games, and a large table for family meals. It has ample off-street parking in front, a side yard for the kids to play in, and a nice deck overlooking the water. It was a very comfortable, clean, spacious, well-decorated, quiet, and convenient. Overall, a great place to stay.

Making it an annual trip

  • 5 of 5

Found this property when searching for a location for a bachelorette party. Could not have asked for a better place for a bunch of ladies to hang out for the weekend. First, the house is set up so well for big groups from everything from the kitchen/dining area to the parking. Second, plenty of places to sleep. Third, we knew it was close to town but seriously!! The deck and patio were awesome even in March. The talk of the weekend, aside from the bride, was about making this an annual getaway. Can't wait for next year!

Reality is better than these pictures!

  • 5 of 5

The perfect house for a getaway! This is the rare times that the reality was so much better than the pictures shown here. The view was amazing, the location you could not beat (one block walking to nearly everything; grocery store, bookstore, bakery, restaurants, bars...). 10 minute drive to Moran State Park, 20 minutes to the ferry.

The beds were comfy and plentiful. The deck and the patio below were stunning and so comfy to hang around, even in the dead of winter, we watched the birds and the sunsets and even saw a big bunny. The kitchen is gorgeous with tons of counter space and a really nice stove and everything you could possibly need for cooking up a great meal. The two fireplaces were so great and easy to operate. There are two flat screen TV's, which only got turned on once. There is a washing machine. The bathrooms were clean with great showers. Easy parking and easy to find. There is a closet full of great games to play.

The owners were amazing and even let us check out super late in order to watch the Superbowl (thank you so much for that even if the Hawks didn't win!).

Great for a big group or just a small intimate escape.

We will for sure be back and wish we could have stayed a lot longer!!

As you walk into the Homestead you have a complete feeling of peace and relaxing. It was a wonderful place for a family getaway. The kitchen was a wonderfully stocked-- spacious area for the family to cook together. We played games and enjoyed each other -- I'm, not sure the TV was ever turned on except for music. We look forward to future trips to Orcas Island and the Homestead.
