Why drive for hours? Right over the bridge and you’re there! The Wood Box is a charming renovated “Classic Cape” overlooking exclusive Hospital Cove in Cataumet – with its own tennis court and shared dock just fifteen minutes from the Bourne Bridge. The two private decks afford views of waterfront activity, as well as spectacular sunsets! The cozy, family-friendly (and dog-friendly) house is equipped with all modern appliances and stocked with everything you’ll need for lobster dinners and barbecues. So close to the water you can take a dip any time of day. **No packing up to go to the beach, just grab a towel!** Or, simply enjoy the view from the comfort of the deck. Sports and game equipment included, lots of boating opportunities around the cove or explore the marine life on the beach. The upstairs bedroom boasts an “extra” kitchenette as well as a separate outside entrance – perfect for sharing with a second family. There’s something for everyone to love in this timeless family summer home.
The five bedrooms include: two king-size beds, one queen and two twin bedrooms. Upstairs bath has a stall shower and downstairs has stall shower and bathtub. There is also an outside shower under the deck - prefect for rinsing off after a swim, or for day visitors.
Cataumet boasts the best ice cream on the Cape: Somerset Creamery - you'll be going back every night to try a different flavor! But save some room - there are terrific restaurants for seafood and more all close at hand. The Silver Lounge with its train caboose dining-room is a favorite with kids, grown-ups might enjoy the rustic Lobster Trap in Pocasset - or the well-known Chart Room at Kingman Marina - you can get there by boat if you choose!
Local amusements for the kids include: miniature golf, go-karts, bumper boats and batting cages. And don't miss the Cape Cod Baseball League, where you can get up close to the action without paying for pricey seats. Midsummer brings the Barnstable County Fair, with livestock, produce and 4-H judging, tractor pulls and a demolition derby. Day trips to Heritage Museum and Gardens or the Woods Hole Aquarium are perfect for a rainy day - grab a cup of clam chowder at the Fishmonger Cafe and watch the drawbridge go up to let boats in and out of the harbor. That is, unless you want to stay out of the rain and pull out one of the many board games or jigsaw puzzles and enjoy a warm fire in the fireplace!
The grocery store is conveniently located in nearby Pocasset - but for fresh corn, live lobsters and ripe tomatoes, there's no need to go farther than local farmstands and Cataumet Fish - all right around the corner!
Kayak and small boat rentals are easily arranged at one of many local shops - take a boat trip to the small, sandy Basset's Island only a few minutes outside the cove for a picnic! Collect shells and enjoy the sand bar, perfect for wading with little children and spotting hermit crabs. Bike rentals for the many local bike paths are handy at Art's Bike Shop, just a few minutes away in North Falmouth. Natural trails and wildlife preserves offer outdoor excursions but we doubt you'll need to go further than the house itself - we've seen everything from ospreys to a red fox - and there are always lots of bunnies.
Missing culture and civilization? Just a short drive away in Mashpee is a large upscale shopping mall, as well as restaurants, supermarkets and movie theaters. The Melody Tent in Hyannis, Highfield Theatre in Falmouth and the Woods Hole International Film Festival provide fine entertainment for the concert, theatre and moviegoer. Falmouth also hosts a world-class road race in early August.

About Lisa Perry-Wood
The Wood Box is owned by the four Wood siblings. While we all grew up in Dover and Dedham, Mass., only one of us lives locally now. David divides his time between NH and NC these days; Margi is in Naples, Florida (when she and her husband are not traveling in their Airstream!), and Ed lives in DC, with a country home in West Virginia. Lisa Perry-Wood manages the property; she and her family live in Lexington, Mass; they also have a condo in Bradenton, Florida, which they rent out seasonally.
Lisa Perry-Wood purchased this house in 1922
Why Lisa Perry-Wood chose Cataumet
The Wood Box is a family heirloom, now owned by the four Wood siblings. It was originally part of a larger property (you can still see 'the big house' on the hill nearby), a farm bought by our grandparents in the 1920s. We all grew up spending summers in this magical spot. Our children, and now our grandchildren, have all enjoyed the warm water, boating and other summer pleasures- five generations of Woods! Now, we invite you to share this place with us and make your own family memories!
What makes this house unique
The all-season tennis court is a great draw. Even if you have never picked up a racquet, you can 'fool around' on the court, with a partner, or hitting balls against the backboard. The dock, shared by other families, but lightly used, is a great place to hang out, as well as to launch our kayak (included with rental) or dinghy. The water in Hospital Cove is exceptionally warm in the summer - many a child has learned to swim here, or adults have rekindled their love of salt water swimming. The hammock under the deck is a perfect place to hang out with a book.
There's also the Shining Sea Bikeway, which now extends all the way from North Falmouth to Woods Hole. You can ride from the house to the bike trail, to Woods Hole, and right onto the ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. A great day trip!
The lawn is perfect for croquet, bocce, badminton or volleyball. And the deck is a lovely place for star-gazing on a warm summer night.
The house is fully equipped with towels (bath and beach), sheets, pillows, blankets, etc. Just move right in and enjoy!
